- 안락의자 탐정의 시조

■작가 소개■


사상최초의 안락의자 탐정이라고 하는〈프린스•자레스키〉시리즈의 친부모로서 유명한 영국 작가.
셜록 홈즈가 스위스의 호수에서 자취을 감춘 다음 해인 1895년에 충격적인 데뷔를 하지만 불과 3개의 단편만 나오고 그 후 자레스키는 더 이상 쓰여지지 않게 된다.

그리고 50년 이상이 지난1945년에 씰의 나이가 80세 되던때에 앨러리 퀸이 추리 단편 콘테스트를 실시하자 다시 자레스키를 쓰게되는데 단편 「The Return of Prince Zaleski 」이다.
그런데 그 응모 도중에 씰은 고령 때문에 의식을 잃고 병원에 입원되었다가 회복했지만 그 후 원고가 어떻게 되었는지 알지 못하게 된다.
그리고 2년 지난1947년에 씰은 사망하는데 그 분실한 원고는 수년이 지난 1954년에 다시 발견되어 퀸의 손에 의해 발표에 이른다고 하는 극적인 운명을 더듬게 된다.
그 밖에도 괴기•스릴러 소설도 다수 발표하고 있는데 그 방면에서도 유명한 작가이다.

경력: 1895년 자레스키의 제1단편집 「프린스•자레스키」로 데뷔 
        1945년 앨러리 퀸의 단편 콘테스트의 이야기를 듣고 50년만에 「프린스•자레스키 돌아오
         다」를 다 쓰지만 응모 도중에 의식을 잃고 원고는 행방불명.그 후 47년에 사망
        1954년 , 행방불명의 원고가 발견되어 앨러리 퀸의 손에 의해 다음 해 발표

영국의 작가.
자신의 경력을 분명히 하는 것을 좋아하지 않아서 연령도 분명히는 모른다고 한다. 그러나 , 괴팍한 인물이라고 하는 것도 아니었다고 하며 친절하고 온아한 성격이었다고 평가 되고 있다.
처음에는 농장 경영을 하고 있었지만 능숙하지 않아선지 그 후에는 져널리스트로 변신 해서 몇개 잡지의 편집 스탭으로서 활약했다고 한다.
그리고 고전학의 전문가이기도 해서인지 매스 캐러도스 단편에도 몇개인가에 그 지식이 드러나 있다.
그의 저작으로서 유명한 것이 Kai Lung이라고 하는 중국인이 말하는 아라비안•나이트풍의 기담을 모은 시리즈가 있는데 오늘날에도 영국에서는 인기가 있다고 한다.
너무나 리얼한 내용으로인해 브래머는 중국에 몇년인가 있던 것이 아닌가 하는 소문도 있었으나 그러한 사실은 없다고 한다.


추리소설가로서는 홈스 시대의 중요한 탐정인 맹인 탐정 맥스 캐러도스의 친부모로서 유명하고 , 이쪽은 전부 1장편 26단편이 있는데 국내에는 80년 중반 자유 추리문고에서 단편집이 출간된후 현재까지 재간된 적이 없는 것으로 알려져 있다.
