- 역사 소설 「빨강 별꽃」의 저자로서도 유명한 영국의 여류작가

■작가 소개■


홈스의 라이벌로서 그리고 안락의자 탐정이 대표로 해 유명한 구석의 노인의 친부모이지만 영국 국내에서는에서는 국민문학으로서의 일련의 「빨강 별꽃」 것의 작자로서 기억되고 있는 것 같다.
덧붙여서〈바로네스〉는 남작부인이라고 하는 의미로 이것은 오르치가 헝가리의 유서 있는 귀족 가문에서 태어났기 때문이다.
전부 68편의 장 단 편집을 남기고 있지만 그 중 14권만이 미스터리작품인데 그 중에 유명한 것은〈구석의 노인〉시리즈와〈레이디•모리〉시리즈이다.
구석의 노인은 안락의자 탐정이 대표로 유명하고 홈스의 라이벌로서도 중요한 탐정중의 한 명으로 거론된다.
이 구석의 노인담은 먼저 쓰여진 제1단편집 「구석의 노인」보다 후에 쓰여진 제2단편집 「미스•엘리엇 사건」이 먼저 간행되어서 추리 소설 수집가로도 유명한 앨러리 퀸도 고개를 갸웃할 정도로 이상한 방법으로 발표되었다고 한다.
그리고 , 오르치이의 또 한사람의 탐정 레이디•모리는 추리 소설 초기의 여성 경찰관 탐정으로 알려져 있다.

■작가 소개■


영국의 소설가.
셜록 홈즈가 「마지막 사건」으로 자취을 감춘 후, 그 후임으로서 마틴 휴이트를 주인공으로 하는 단편 추리소설을〈스트랜드•매거진〉에 연재한 것이 모리슨이다.
본인은 원래 져널리스트로 추리소설의 집필은 어디까지나 여가로서 생각하고 있던 것 같았지만, 현재는 탐정 휴이트의 작가로서 기억되고 있는 것 같다.
아서 모리슨의 경우도 사실은 역사 모험 소설의 분야에서 인정받고 싶었다고 하는데 홈스의 작자 코난 도일과 닮았다.
모리슨은 마틴 휴이트 외에도 호레스 드린톤이라고 하는 캐릭터가 있는데 이 캐릭터는 이른바 시리즈 크리미날로 추리 소설 초기 시대의 범죄자 캐릭터로서 추리 역사에 이름을 남기고 있다.호레스•드린톤이 활약하는 작품으로서는1897년의 단편집 「The Dorrington Deed-Box 」가 있다.
저서로서는 그 밖에도 희곡이나 런던의 빈민굴을 무대로 한 뉴 리얼리즘 소설 「A Child of the Jago 」(1896 ) 등도 발표하고 있어 높은 평가를 받고 있다.
또한 동양 미술의 연구•수집가이기도 해서 「일본의 화가」(1911 )라고 하는 에도시대의 풍속화의 연구서도 출판한바 있다.
모리슨의 저서는 현재는 추리소설을 포함해서 그 의 저작물의 모두가 본국인 영국에서도 찾기 어려운 상황이라고 하며 국내에서는 번역된바 없다고 여겨진다.
