'The Edge Chronicles' 시리즈를 만든 폴 스튜어트가 낸 기사 이야기 2번째예요.
땅끝연대기에 비해 내용이 간략하고 일러스트는 좀 조잡하지만(크리스 리들이 일부러 그런건지 아님 초기작이라 그런건지는 파악 못했습니다.^^) 지난번에 1편을 읽었는지라 선택했지요.
허나 굳이 기사 이야기라고 2가지 이야기가 연결되어 있지 않아서 순서 관계없이 읽어도 무방합니다.
주인공은 토너먼트 경기에 우승한 상금으로 살아가는 프리랜서 기사예요.
엄청난 상금이 건 토너먼트에 참석한 프리랜서는 토너먼트에서 지면 더 큰 상금을 주겠다는 영주의 제안과 꼭 이겨달라는 영주의 조카 딸에게 제안을 받습니다.
돈과 명예 사이에 갈등을 하다가 결국 명예를 선택합니다.
그리고 뜻밖의 반전을 만나게 되는데요..(솔직히 읽는동안 눈치채었지만^^)
영주의 조카딸이 사랑한 음유시인은 실상 돈에 먼 사기꾼에 그녀의 시종과 짜고 그녀를 농락한거였습니다.
결국 프리랜스는 자신의 명예를 지키고 조카딸을 위기에서 구해주게 됩니다.
그리고 그에게 새로운 동조자와 함께 여행을 오르게 됩니다.
솔직히.. 다음편이 나온다하면 읽을것인지는 장담 못하는 책이예요.

Immediately afterward, the duke's beautiful niece begs the knight not to throw the match, because if he does, her uncle will force her to marry the henchman. The knight finds himself in a dilemma-and more tricks and betrayals lie ahead. The prose, and the story, are unchallenging, but will be popular with middle-grade readers-or middle-school marginal readers-who want an easy read with lots of fast-moving battles and action.
