앞서 말한대로 크리스티 여사는 마더 구즈 동요를 자신의 책속에 많이 인용했는데 제목으로 쓴 경우도 있지만(이런 경우 쉽게 알수 있지요),책 내용속에 삽입하면 우리가 잘 모르는 경우가 많습니다
“글쎄요.잘 모르겠는데요……동요에 있잖습니까.-허버드 엄마의 개,<엄마가 돌아왔을떄 멍멍, 피리를 불고 있었네>라는 것 말입니다…”(구름속의 살인중에서)
포와로와 비행기 탑승고객중 한명인 라이더와의 대화 한 대목입니다.
여기서 라이더가 말하는 동요 허버드 엄마의 개의 원제는 "Old Mother Hubbard"이라고 하는 머더 구스 동요의 한 소절로「어머니 돌아갔을 때, 멍멍, 피리를 불고 있었다」는14소절중 7번째 소절의 가사입니다.
