오래된 우울이 느긋하게 자기 자리를 찾아 돌아오고 낯선 슬픔이 주위를 두리번거리며 머릿속을 파고드는 이른 오후였다. 사람들의 구둣발 밑에서 투둑거리며 연필들이 부러지는 소리가 여전히 머릿속을 두드리며 손과 발을 떨게 하고 팔과 다리를 뻣뻣하게 했다. 나는 공들여 숨을 내쉬었다.

그 인터뷰는 대중의 상투적 기대를 만족시켜주기 위한 것이지 서연화 개인의 진실을 담아내지 못할 것이기 때문이다. 그래서 이 소설의 본질은 서연화의 셀프 인터뷰다. 작가는 몇 군데에서 그가 눈을 감는 행위를 보여주는데, 그것은 그가 자신의 진실 안에 존재하는 상태를 의미하기 때문에, 서연화는 이렇게 말하기까지 한다. "눈을 감을 수 없다는 건 얼마나 무서운 일인가." 작가는 서연화의 눈꺼풀 안쪽까지를 들여다보며 그의 진실을 함께 지켜낸다. 너무도 긴 시간과 많은 감정이 응축돼 있어서 다른 말로 바꿔 쓸 수조차도 없는 한 단어 ‘요카타‘로 귀결될 그런 진실을. E. M. 포스터는 인간은 자기 자신에게조차 진실하게 말하지 않기 때문에, 자기 자신에게 진실하게 말하는 다른 인간을 만나고 싶어 소설을 읽는다고 말한 적이 있다. 딱 그런 소설이다.

Mussolini, the prime minister, was nicknamed Il Duce - “The Leader”. He would remain prime minister of Italy for the next twenty-one years.
- Although he held the title prime minister, Mussolini was actually a military dictator. He wanted to build a new Roman Empire by recapturing land all around the Mediterranean Sea. He knew that Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome, was supposed to have taken a plow and plowed out the borders of his new city. So, imitating Romulus, Mussolini got on a tractor and drove around the borders of new cities that he hoped to build in his “new Roman Empire”.

- Solzhenitsyn wrote that revolution can never get rid of the evil inside human beings. It can only get rid of particular governments. Even when the evil of those governments is destroyed, the evil inside human beings remains.
- Solzhenitsyn was right. The communist government had been formed to get rid of tyranny. But Joseph Stalin, the leader of Communist Russia, was as cruel, as tyrannical, and as evil as any Russian czar had ever been.
