200살이 넘은 참나무 'Red'의 시점에서, 이방인에 대한 배척과 혐오를 넘어 우정과 사랑과 공동체에 대해, 문제를 제거하는 편리함을 넘어 인간과 비인간과 자연의 공생에 대해 한 편의 우화같이 들려주는 이야기.

분량은 많지 않지만, 자연이나 묘사에 대한 생소한 단어들이 많아 읽기 아주 쉽지는 않았다,

스토리, 사건 위주의 영어 동화책보다 예술적이거나 철학적인 내용이 함축된 영어 그림책이 읽기 더 어려운 것처럼.

applegate 책 2권 읽었는데, 계속 읽기

다음 책은 자꾸 <The Martian> 읽으라는 둘째가 두번 째로 권해준 <A Dog's Purpose>. 이것도 거부했으나,,, 자꾸 들이밀어서,,, 한번 읽어 보련다. 글자가 깨알이다;;;;

첫째가 엄청 좋아하던 책. 아이들은 책도 보고 영화도 봤었는데.

3개의 독립적인 이야기로 구성되어 있다.

- Auggie에게 가장 'mean'했던 무리의 우두머리였던 Julian과 그의 프랑스 할머니 이야기

- Auggie와 아기 때부터 베프였으나 커가며 점점 어색해진 친구 Christopher와 그의 엄마의 교통사고 이야기

- Auggie의 학교 Welcome buddy이며, 항상 남들에게 neutral하고 nice하게 보이고 싶어하는 Charlotte과 친구들의 우정 이야기

이 책에는 Auggie가 전혀 등장하지 않지만, Auggie와의 만남이 그들에게 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는데, 그들이 어떻게 변화하는지 감동적으로 보여준다. 영어책 읽으며 울다니... 더 감동적이야...

Being Kind, Kindness에 대한 작가의 이야기는 계속된다.
