Japan Re-Open

- When Matthew Perry came back to Japan in 1854, the Japanese agreed to sign a trade treaty with the United States. Not too long after, France, Spain, and other European countries signed their own treaties with Japan.


The Crimean War

- Christians’ holy places (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Constantinople) in the Turk
- Nicholas I, the czar of Russia wanted to take Constantinople for sailing down into the Mediterranean Sea
- England’s fear of Russia
- France’s fear of Russia
-> France and Britain vs Russia
-> France and Britain were determined to capture the Russian city of Sevastopol in the Crimean Peninsula which was in the north of the Black Sea.
-> In 1856, Alexander, Nicholas’s son, agreed to sign a peace treaty called the Peace of Paris. Russia would get Sevastopol back, but only after returning Turkish land to the Turks. And Russia had to promise not to keep any warships in the Black Sea.
