The First Opium War
In 1842, the Chinese and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Nanjing, which they called the ˝unequal treaty.˝
China had to pay Great Britain twenty-one million dollars for the opium that had been destroyed.
They had to agree to open up five more ports for British ships to trade in.
The whole island of Hong Kong had to be given to the British.
