Ch.40 Mexico and Her Neighbor
Remember the Alamo
The Mexican-American War
With American soldiers pouring through the streets of Mexico City, the Mexican Congress agreed to sign a peace treaty as long as the United States paid the Mexican government for the land it was losing.
In 1848, the United States paid Mexico fifteen million dollars. In return, Mexico gave up Texas and another piece of land where California, Nevada, Utah, Ari-zona, Colorado, Wyoming, and part of New Mexico now lie.
A few years later, the United States paid Mexico another ten million dollars for the rest of New Mexico.
The Mexican-American War was finally over. And the United States of America now held most of the land it owns today.
