밑줄긋기에 올렸던 부분의 일부를 번역해 올린다. 회사에서 편집중인 과학서에 인용된 부분인데, 역자 번역이 영 마음에 안 들어서.






He found himself in a land where no one had ever penetrated before; where order was an accidental relation obnoxious to nature; artificial compulsion imposed on motion; against which every free energy of the universe revolted; and which, being merely occasional, resolved itself back into anarchy at last. 그는 어느 누구도 이전에는 들어가 보지 못한 낯선 땅, 질서가 자연에 몹시 무례하게 된 곳, 인위적 충동이 행동을 지배하는 곳, 우주의 모든 자유 에너지가 들끓는 곳, 그저 우연히, 결국에는 스스로 다시 혼란으로 분해되어 버리는 그런 곳에 있음을 알았다. (역자 번역)

그는 자신이 어느 누구도 통과한 적 없는 땅에 있음을 깨달았다. 질서가 무례하게도 자연과 우발적 관계인 곳, 움직임에 인공적인 강제가 부과되며, 우주의 모든 자유 에너지로부터 배반당하는 곳, 다만 이따금 결국에는 혼란 상태로 귀착되고 마는, 그런 곳에. (나)


'어려운 글은 풀어서'라는 원칙은 항상 통용되는 원칙이 아니다. 사실 원칙이라고 부를 만한 것도 아니다. 원저자가 일부러 어렵게 쓴(문장 구조야 말할 것도 없지만, 단어 차원에서도 penetrate 대신 enter를, merely 대신 only를 쓸 수도 있었다는 얘기다) 글을 '이 책은 교양과학서니까'라는 이유로 굳이 쉽게 옮길 필요는 없다고 본다. 무엇보다, 이건 인용문이잖아.
