사두고 밀어두기만 하던 <모비 딕>을 출퇴근 길 전자책으로 읽고 있다. 그런데 응.... 아니 이 작품 BL 느낌? 이스마엘과 퀴퀘그 사이가 좀 그런데, 애초부터 둘이 만나게 된 계기도 같이 잘 수밖에 없어서 한 침대를 씀, 어쩔 수 없이 같이 자다가 눈 뜬 이스마엘이 자신의 몸뚱이에 올려진 퀴퀘그 팔을 내려놓지도 못하고 난감해하면서도 약간 기분 좋아하는....-_-? 이런 장면들을 읽다 보니 아하, 출퇴근길 전철에서 읽기 적절하구나! 뜻하지 않은 BL이었어! 사실 멜빌의 작품 중에서는 퀴어 코드로 읽히는 작품들이 종종 있다(<모비 딕>, <빌리버드>, <피에르 혹은 모호함>). 그의 작품이 그렇게 읽히기도 한다는 건 알고 있었는데, 이스마엘하고 퀴퀘그 사이는 좀 너무 진하잖아? 게다가 얘네들 침대에서 같이 이야기하는 게 너무 재미나서 아침에 막 일찍 일어나고 이런다…?암튼 내가 빵 터진 부분.담배를 다 피우자, 그는 제 이마를 내 이마에 비비며 내 허리를 끌어안고는, 이제부터 우리는 결혼한 사이라고 말했다. 퀴퀘그의 고향에서는 그 말이 진정한 친구라는 뜻이고, 필요하다면 나를 위해 기꺼이 죽겠다는 뜻이었다. -알라딘 eBook <모비 딕> (허먼 멜빌 지음, 김석희 옮김) 중에서
