하버드 클래식과 열린 인문학 강의

지난주에 제목만 보고 구입한 책 가운데 하나는 윌리엄 앨런 닐슨이 엮은 <열린 인문학 강의>(유유, 2012)다. 아, 부제도 보긴 했다. '전 세계 교양인이 100년간 읽어온 하버드 고전수업'. 하버드대학의 고전강의를 엮은 책으로만 대충 짐작했는데, 어제 책을 펴보니 '하버드 고전수업'은 '하버드 클래식 강의' 혹은 '하버드 클래식 해설강의' 정도의 의미였다. 원제가 'Lectures on the Harvard Classics'이기 때문이고, 'Harvard Classics'은 일명 '5피트 책꽂이'로 불린 50권짜리 고전 선집을 가리킨다. 이 선집에 대해서는 크리스토퍼 베하의 <하버드 인문학 서재>(21세기북스, 2010)를 참고할 수 있다. 우리로 치면 <권장도서 해제집>(서울대출판부, 2005) 같은 성격의 책이라고 할까.

하버드 클래식의 기획자는 당시 40년간이나 총장을 지냈던 찰스 윌리엄 엘리엇이고, 이 클래식 해제의 책임 편집자가 영문과 교수였던 윌리엄 앨런 닐슨이다. 그리고 책이 출간된 게 1914년. '전 세계 교양인이 100년간 읽어온'이라고 할 때 '전 세계'란 말은 과장이지만 '100년간'은 맞는 말이다. 딱 100년전 책이니까. 역자 후기에는 이렇게 설명돼 있다.

<열린 인문학 강의>는 '하버드 고전'(Harvard Cassics)이라는 총서의 51번째 책을 번역한 것입니다. 51번째 책은 '하버드 고전' 50권을 완간하고 나서 고전을 접하는 독자들에게 일종의 길잡이 역할을 하려고 기획된 강연을 바탕으로 만들어졌습니다.(...) 저는 이 책에서 인문학 분야의 강의를 번역하되 지금 시점에서 우리에게 별 의미를 가지지 못하는 부분은 오랜 고민 끝에 덜어냈습니다.  

그러니까 완역은 아니고 인문학 관련 분야를 선별해서 옮겼다는 얘기다(완역한다면 물론 책이 훨씬 두꺼워질 것이다). 검색해보니 책의 전체 목차는 아래와 같고, 원문도 읽어볼 수 있다(http://www.bartleby.com/60/).

정리해보자면 <열린 인문학 강의>의 더 적절한 제목은 <하버드 클래식 강의>라는 점. '100년 전' 책이라는 게 흠일 수 있지만, 당시 하버드대학 최강 교수진이 대거 참여한 강의라는 점, 인문학 분야를 선별한 번역이라는 점 등이다...
