윌리엄 스타이그는 뉴욕의 예술가 집안 출생으로, 뉴요커 같은 잡지에 카툰을 기고하다가 예순이넘어서 어린이책 작가가 되었다고 한다. <용감한 아이린>이나, <치과의사 드소토 선생님>에서도 느낄 수 있듯이, 그의 작품은 "얘야, 세상은 그렇게 호락호락하지 않단다. 그렇다고 재미없거나 삭막하지만도 않아."라고 하는 것 같다.
실베스터가 마술 조약돌을 발견하고, 그게 소원을 들어준다는 것을 알았을 때, 사악한 늑대(?여우) 무리에서 벗어나는 기지를 발휘하긴 했지만, 막상 더 위협적인 사자를 만났을 때, 잡아먹히는 곤경에서 벗어나기 위해 외친다는 것이 "바위"였다. 다행히 먹히지는 않았지만, 보통의 우리네가 그렇듯 기지가 많이 부족했다. 꼼짝 안 하는 바위가 되었으니 집에 돌아갈수도 부모님을 만날수도 없잖은가?
슬퍼하시는 부모님, 그리고 실베스터.
