대한민국에는 "미디어 되찾기"(Take Back the Media)와 유사한 활동을 하고 있는 언론 소비자 단체가 있습니다.
미국인들이 FOX TV의 광고주들에게 항의를 하듯, 아니면 러쉬 림보(Rush Limbaugh)의 라디오의 광고주들에게 광고를 철회할 것을 요구하듯 우리들도 옳지 않은 언론사의 광고주들에게 광고를 내려줄 것을 요구하는 운동을 하고 있습니다. 우리나라의 조선일보, 중앙일보, 동아일보는 미국의 FOX 방송과 같은 우익 언론이지만, FOX 방송사와 다른 점은 '거짓말'을 밥먹듯이 한다는 점입니다. 예컨대 정권이 바뀌기 전에는 미국 쇠고기에 광우병 위험이 있으니 절대 수입하지 말라고 경고했다가, 정권이 바뀌자 같은 냉동고에서 보관돼 있던 그 쇠고기(미국산 쇠고기)에는 절대로 광우병 위험이 없으니 열심히 먹어서 미국과 친해져야 한다는 식의 보도를 하는 것이 이 신문사들의 일상입니다.
미국에서는 폭스 광고주에게 항의전화를 했다고 이탈리아 밀라노에서 패션쇼를 구경하거나 영국 올드트래포드 경기장에서 맨체스터 유나이티드의 축구 경기를 볼 수 없도록 국가에서 출국을 금지시키는지 궁금합니다. 대한민국에서는 광고주와 통화하고 전화기를 끊자마자 '검찰'에서 공소장이 날아오고, 법원에서는 구속 영장이 날아듭니다. 자동차를 구매했다가 이유 없는 고장이 일어나거나 휴대폰을 이용하다가 이유 없이 폭발이 나는 등의 이유가 아닌 경우 광고주에게 전화를 하기 위해서는 감옥에 가는 것을 감수해야 합니다.
광고주에게 전화를 걸어도 감옥에 가지 않는 방법이 또 한 가지 있습니다. 우익 성향의 단체에 가입해 언론에 광고를 싣는 광고주에게 항의전화를 하면 밀라노나 영국은 물론 '북한'에도 갈 수 있습니다. 실제로 우파들은 '미디어발전국민연합'이라는 단체를 급조해 '미디어오늘'이라는 미디어비평 전문매체에 대한 광고불매운동을 전개하였고 정부로부터 아무런 제재도 받지 않고 있습니다. 이들의 노력으로 인해 공영방송 KBS의 간판 미디어비평 프로그램인 <미디어포커스>는 문을 닫았습니다.
2008년 여름 대한민국은 촛불을 전국이 뒤덮였습니다. 정부가 국민의 요구와는 전혀 다른 정책을 펴면서도 한마디 설명도 없고 거짓말만 늘어놓은 데 대한 분노가 터졌기 때문입니다. 그 과정에서 앞서 소개한 세 신문사(조선, 중앙, 동아)는 거리에 나온 시민들을 반정부 불법세력, 또는 불순분자로 폄하하였고 정부가 훌륭하게 정책을 펼치고 있다고 또 한바탕 거짓말을 늘어놓았습니다. 시민들은 이 거짓말쟁이 신문사에 광고를 싣는 회사에 대한 불매운동과 전화항의운동을 전개함으로써 이 신문사들을 망하기 일보 직전까지 몰고 갔습니다. 60면을 넘게 발행하던 조선일보는 최근 30면 이하로 발행면수가 줄어들기도 했습니다. 5월 31일 온라인 카페를 개설하고 8월 30일에는 '언론소비자주권 국민캠페인'이라는 공식 명칭으로 시민단체를 만들기까지 하였습니다. 시민단체를 출범하기까지 세 신문사는 카페를 개설한 온라인 회사에게 우리 카페를 폐쇄해달라고 공식 요청했으며, 대한민국 검찰은 카페 회원들을 대상으로 수사를 시작해 2명의 회원을 구속시켰고, 22명을 법정에 세웠습니다. 그 중에서는 고등학생도 있습니다.
검찰의 공소사실을 보면 기가 막힌 내용이 많은데, 검찰에 의해 기소된 한 회원은 댓글에 'ㅋㅋㅋ'이라는 의성어를 썼다는 이유가 포함돼 있었고, 한 대학생은 웹디자인 프로그램을 이용해서 카페 메인화면에 태극기를 그려 넣었다는 이유로 기소되었습니다. 이들 24명의 회원은 매주 화요일마다 학교나 직장을 쉬고 법정에 나와야 하는데, 불가피한 사정으로 인해 법정에 나오지 않을 경우 곧바로 구속될 수도 있다는 경고를 받았습니다. 때문에 직장인은 매주 화요일마다 휴가를 써서 재판에 참석하고 있고, 학생들은 결석을 해야 하는 상황입니다. 이런 일을 13번이나 해왔습니다. 이것은 약과입니다. 학교 선생님인 한 회원은 기소된 사실 자체만으로도 징계위원회에 회부돼 직장을 잃을 위기에 처했습니다.
대한민국의 광고시장은 작년에 기록적인 불황을 기록했는데, 거짓말쟁이 신문사들은 자신들의 광고매출 하락을 모두 광고불매운동의 탓으로 돌려 형사재판 이후에 거액의 손해배상소송을 준비하고 있습니다. 그것은 개인으로서는 감당하기 힘든 액수가 될 것입니다.
검찰의 구형이 임박해 왔습니다. 검찰은 무거운 형벌을 내려달라고 재판장에게 요구할 것입니다. 검찰의 구형은 언론소비자운동을 하는 대한민국 시민에게만 해당하는 것이 아니라, 넓게는 언론소비자운동에 대해서 엄벌을 내리는 것이 아닐까요. 각국의 언론상황은 다를 수 있습니다. 하지만 인권과 언론소비자의 권리는 세계 공통의 가치입니다. 대한민국은 작은 나라이지만, 대한민국에서 언론소비자의 주권이 짓밟히면 일본을 넘어서 세계 곳곳에서 언론소비자에 대한 위협이 현실화될 것입니다. 대한민국에서 일어나고 있는 조그만 재판을 여러분들이 주시해야 하는 이유가 충분하지 않나요?

Today we are very happy to tell you our interesting story from Korea.
We are called 'Korea Press Consumerism Organization' (KPCO) organized in South Korea just like "Take Back the Media" in the U.S.
We absolutely and adamantly believe that we have the right of consumers to dissuade the sponsors from publishing the ads in Cho-sun, Dong-a and Joong-ang- the three Korean distorted & deceptive dailies, such as many Americans make a strong protest towards the FOX TV advertisers and the ones of Rush Limbaugh's radio channel.

The biggest difference between the above-mentioned three right-wing media and FOX TV is their habitual lying and hypocrisy.
Let us give you a very good example!
They used to warm the former Korean government not to import U.S beef for its possibility of mad cow disease before the change of regime only a few years ago, however, once Grand National party becomes a ruling party, now they are insisting on the U.S beef's safety from frozen storage. On the contrary, temporizing that we (Korea) shall strengthen alliance with the U.S by steady consumption for U.S beef. That's what they claimed and also their daily.
Nowadays in Korea, since the Mr. President-Lee Myung-bak's inauguration, we have being accused by the prosecution and receiving the warrant of arrest by the court of Justice indiscriminately, as soon as we hang up the phone with advertisers of the three media.
Some people were even banned from leaving our country when they went through the departure procedure at the airport. We wonder whether the same is happening even in your countries.
Is that really possible to arise in the 21st century?
According to their principle, we might even suffer going to jail just because we protested against the sponsors by telephone except that your automobile breaks down without any reason or your cellular phone explodes without being ridiculous.
Of course, there's another way not to go to jail with calling advertisers.
Only if you join the ultra-rightist organization such as 'National Union for Media Development' (NUMD), then you may go to Milano, England and even North Korea wherever you prefer, even if calling them.
Actually the rightists in South Korea organized 'NUMD' hurriedly. And then, they've developing ad boycott against the critical professional media from the current Korean government's neglect. As a result, they eventually have been succeeded in abolishing<Media Today>- one of the most famous critical media program in KBS (Korean Broadcasting System)
In the summer of 2008, South Korea was covered with millions of candles representing the anger over the government which made inconsistent and unilateral policy regardless of the people's opposition. In the process, the three right-wing newspapers (Cho-sun, Dong-a and Joong-ang dailies) not only underestimated the citizens in the street as illegal anti-government forces or extremists, also saying that the government has displaying productive and satisfactory policy for the nation.
Thus, a lot of Koreans began to protest over the sponsors not to place ads in those three newspapers and imposed a boycott. It resulted in a blast for them just before death.
Their ad space tumbled 50% from 60 pages to 30 pages. Not just here, on 31st May, 2008, a large number of Korean citizens organized a NGO, named 'KPCO'.
So the three right-wing media officially requested internet company-DAUM (http://www.daum.net/) to shut up our internet community (http://cafe.daum.net/stopcjd),
As well as, the Korean prosecution arrested 2 citizens and brought 22 people to court.
Among those, there was even a high school student minor.
In particular, we were dumbfounded at their written arraignment.
One of those 24 prisoners at the bar is being indicted just because he sneered at the prosecution's nonsense behavior with the comment of "HO HO HO". And another undergraduate is being prosecuted, as he drew the national flag on the main screen of our internet community using a web design program.
In this way, all the 24 citizens are being warned to appear in court with abandoning their livelihood every Tuesday. So they've got days off in the workplace and students absent themselves from classes for the criminal trial.
They've been doing this 13 times, 13 times….but that's not enough yet!
A school teacher, as one of the accused, she is facing rough situation that she might lose her job from the disciplinary committee, because she is being indicted as a public educational personnel.
In 2008, Korea's ad market took a downward turn due to the unprecedented recession. Nevertheless, the three right-wing media asserting that they suffered all the losses just because of our ad boycott campaign. Therefore, they are putting spurs on preparation for an enormous sum of damage suit after this preposterous criminal action. If so, it would apparently be difficult amount for individual to handle.
So now, the prosecution will strongly ask judge to impose heavy punishment for the accused very soon. In such case, we are of the opinion that it will not only apply to Korea's citizens, also will give all the world's press consumer advocate severe punishment and incurable wound.
Undoubtedly, the press situation of each country will be different. Most importantly, however, we believe the rights of man and press consumers are the common value over the world.
Should sovereignty of press-consumers be downtrodden in Korea, the aftermath would be realized and spread to all over the world beyond Japan, even though Korea belongs to small country.
So don't you still have enough reasons to watch this little trial happening in South Korea now?
