I wasn't sure that it would not be rude to argue in Sora's facebook so I came here to discuss things about 강호순 and recent incident. I say incident because I mean to focus on how mass media reacts to these kinds of sexual violence.
People get more furious when they hear that children were victim of sexual violence than adults. Especially mass media tend to make issues about it, say they are 'demon'. I agree that sexual violence should be regarded as 'evil' behavior and we have to protect whomever can be victiomized.
But, what do we assume, when we regard someone with certain characteristics should be more protected. Regardless of sex, gender, sexuality, age, race, class they all have rights to be protected from others doing harm to them. Do they have more right, if they are female or if they are rich? That can be sexists.
Same thing goes with age. Victim's age can not be the barometer for how evil the attacker are. Because in that way we are regarding, someone is lesser than others.
Ofcourse generally we should regard child with special care. No one can deny that.
But situations like rape, we shoul regard everyone being raped to be, equally powerless and hurt. If you regard adult victim is lesser hurt. Or even worse, if you unconscious feel more sorry for children because they were more vulnerable. It means that you regard adult victims of rape as, less vulnerable. Which might means that unconsicously you fell that adults victims was little bit responsible for the incident.
And IT IS NOT. When rape happens, we can not point fingers at victim. Even if they are older than 30, if they were raped, it is not their falut. You may think that it is somewhat their falut, that they should known better to not to go to dark place after 10 or, not date a men who drives a motorcycle etc... But those kinds of things are not the victims fault. It goes same with, blaming the victim that she wore too short skirts.
But mass media tend to have those kinds of premises. If you are underage, you didn't have any method to get away. But if you are an adult, you should known better. It sounds harsh, but if you exaggerate a bit, mass media is saying same as that.
I'll going to have a baby daughter this October, and I too really hate that guy who rape a 8 years old. But I equally hate anyone who rapes other people, and equally feel guilt that I could or did not do anything to prevent it.
