실제로 이런 대회가 있을리 없지만 재미있는 발상이다. 

남녀 대결로 시작해서 결국 서로 이해하고 화해한다는 이야기.

욕망: 데이브는 자신을 더 잘 알기 위해 간디의 묵언 전략을 따라하기로 한다. 데이브는 원래 말이 많은 아이다. 

사건: 식당에서 린지가 친구들과 수다떠는 것을 듣고 화가 나 말 안 하기 대회를 제안한다. 만약 선생님이나 부모가 말을 걸면 3단어만으로 답할 수 있다. 

절정: 선생님들도 아이들의 내기를 알게 되고 이를 동조하는 선생과 그렇지 않은 선생으로 나눈다. 교장 선생은 게임을 멈추라고 하지만 데이브는 반항한다. 말 안 할 권리도 있다며. 아이들은 그런 데이브를 응원한다. 결국 린지는 데이브와 남자들을 인정하게 되고 게임은 동점으로 끝난다.

저자는 학교 교사 출신이다. 그래서인지 교내에서 일어나는 아이들의 모습을 참 생생하게 그린다.

줄거리

Cyra와 Akos의 운명이 바뀌었다! Cyra Kereseth와 Akos Noavek이 본명이다. Sifa는 비극적 운명을 막기 위해 신녀인 두 아이를 태어나자마자 바꿔치기 했다.

이들의 운명: The third child of the family Kereseth will die in service to the family Noavek. 

The second child of the family Noavek will cross the Divide.

다행히 운명에는 이름이 없다. 

Lazmet Noavek은 살아있다. Lazmet을 죽이기 위해 Akos가 Shotet 궁전을 몰래 침입하고 결국 Hasse의 신전에서 그를 죽인다. 

Cyra는 Thuvhe가 Shotet Voa을 공격하려 하자 자신의 재능인  Currentshadow를 이용해 anticurrent를 막는다. 다행히 Cyra는 혼자가 아니다. Teka, Yma, Sifa가 곁에 있다.

속편에서는 Cisi의 역할도 매우 중요하다. Kereseth가 의 장녀. 그녀의 재능은 사람의 마음을 안정시키는 것. 대신 Cisi는 다른 사람을 불편하게 할 수는 없다. 그래서 소리를 지른다거나 운다거나 하는 행동을 할 수 없다. Cisi는 THuvhe의 수장, Isae Benesit를 사랑한다. 그녀의 곁에서 그녀의 통치를 돕는다. 

Eijeh와 Ryzek은 한 몸이다. 

Shotet에서 망명한 자들이 이제  Shotet의 정부를 장악했다. 주권을 인정받은 대신 땅에서 쫓겨났다. 다행히 Shotet 주민들은 Ogra 행성으로 이주한다. Ogra가 땅을 내주었다. 우주에서는 신녀들을 믿는 행성(Tepes, ogra, Shotet)과 믿지 않는 행성(Othyr, Thuvhe, Pitha)으로 나뉜다.

Akos와 Cyra는 함께 Ogra에서 산다.

Cyra: cross the Divide/ gift to feel pain to others

Summary:

The Assembly announced the fates of the favored lines. Ryzek kidnapps Akos and Eijeh because of their fates. Ryzek needs Eijeh to read the future and change his fate. His sister Cyra has the ability to inflict pain on others as well as on herself. Ryzek uses Cyra as a weapon. Akos is sent to Cyra to ease her pain. His ability is to interrupt currents. Akos goal is to free is brother from Ryzek and go back home. Cyra hates her brother and wants to escape him. Cyra and Akos make a deal. Cyra trains Akos in combat and Akos teaches Cyra to make painkillers. Cyra and Akos fall in love and they work together with the resilience and the chancellor of Thuvhe to defeat Ryzek. They take both Eijeh and Ryzek to Thuvhe. Ryzek reveals that Cyra and he do not have the same father. Luzmet is still alive.

Carve the mark: tradition of Shotet to carve the number of losses lives on their skin.

Akos couldn‘t stand it anymore. "I don‘t want to be rude." he said, "but I need to know about Cyra."
Ara folded her hands over her stomach. "What about Miss Noavek?"
"Is she...?" He couldn‘t quite say the world.

He wasn‘t sure what it would be like, kissing her this way, not because she surprised him and he didn‘t think to pull away, but because he just wanted to. She tasted malt and spiced from the painkiller she had swallowed, and she was a little hesitant, like she was afraid to hurt time. But kissing her was touching match to kindling.
