많이 팔리는 작품이 좋은 작품은 아니라는 사실이 또 한번 입증된 것인가...

영광전당포 살인사건

내가 살인 사건이라는 말만 가지고 책을 사지 말자고 맹세하게 된 작품이다. 물론 그 맹세는 지켜지지 않았다. 이 작품에 대한 평이 무척 좋았고 많은 사람들이 읽기에 - 원래 그러면 더 안 읽게 되는데 - 한국 추리 소설을 의무적으로라도 읽겠다고 다짐한 것 때문에 망설이지 않고 샀다. 그리고 읽었다. 이제야 서평을 쓴다. 왜냐하면 정말 어이없었기 때문이다. 난 제발 작가들이 아무 작품에나 살인 사건이라는 제목 좀 붙이지 않았으면 좋겠다. 추리 소설이 작가들, 특히 우리나라 작가들 눈에는 하위 장르의 하찮은 작품들로 보일지 모르지만 그렇다고 그들이 함부로 대하며 독자를 우롱할 권리는 없다.
언젠가 작가를 가두고 글을 쓰라고 하고 싶은 작가를 조사했었다. 그때 나는 이 작가가 생각났다. 가두고 글 못 쓰게 하고 싶은 작가로... 이 작가 좋아하는 독자들에게는 미안한 말이지만.
이 작품의 결점은 작가의 노골적인 정치 색이다. 비판은 은근하고 은유적이어야 더 사로잡을 수 있는 매력으로 다가오는 법이다. 하지만 작가는 너무 노골적이었다. 그래서 시원했을 지는 몰라도 소설로서 적어도 독자를 생각하는 작가라면 이런 식으로 자신의 소설을 더럽힐 수는 없다. 차라리 공개 비판의 글을 쓸 것이지 뭐 하러 소설을 쓴 단 말인가. 그것도 장르를 알 수 없는 SF도 아니고 추리 소설도 아닌 형식을 취하면서 말이다.
이런 작가들이 있어 우리 나라 장르 소설이 발전하지 못한다는 생각이 든다. 정말 유치하기 그지없다. 비슷한 색깔을 가지고 쓴 작가의 단편을 소개한다. 일본 SF 작가인 츠츠이 야스다키의 <인간 동물원> 중에 있는 <원시 공산제>다. 같은 파시즘에 대한 비판이지만 얼마나 판이하게 다른지 알 수 있을 것이다. 작가는 이 작품에서 일본 에니메이션 <공각기동대>에 등장하는 쿠사나기 모토코까지 등장시킨다. 그러면서도 이 정도가 작가의 한계이다.
작가는 비판적이어야 하지만 그 비판을 작품에서 편향되지 않은 시각으로 녹여 낼 줄 알아야 한다. 이미 중심을 잃은 작가가 쓴 글은 결코 잘 설 수가 없다. 작가가 이것을 깨닫기를 바란다. 소설을 화풀이 대상이 아닌 글쓰기 대상으로 삼기를. 독자에게 메시지를 전달하려면 직접적이 아닌 간접적이어야 한다. 그리고 시야를 넓히기를. 작가가 우물 안에서 울기만 하는 개구리가 될 것인지 그 우물에서 벗어나 넓은 호수를 찾을 것인지 지켜보겠다. 하지만 당분간 당신의 책을 읽을 생각은 없구료.
내가 이해할 수 없는 것은 <오시리스 살인 사건>이 훨씬 잘 쓰여진 작품인데도 불구하고 이 작품이 더 많이 팔렸다는 점이다. 많이 팔리는 작품이 좋은 작품은 아니라는 사실이 또 한번 입증된 것인가...

작품성과 오락성을 모두 충족시키는 역사 추리 소설...

티투스 - 베스타 무녀의 샘
장 프랑수아 나미아 지음, 도화진 옮김 / 솔출판사 / 2004년 7월

역사 추리 소설은 크게 두 종류로 나눌 수 있다. 역사 소설에 추리를 가미한 작품, 무대가 옛날 일뿐인 추리 소설... 이 작품은 어디에 속 하냐 하면 후자 쪽이다. 역사 추리 소설이 읽기 어려운 점은 역사적 사실을 너무 강조한 나머지 독자를 길을 잃게 만들기 때문이다. 또 독자가 원한 게 단순한 추리 소설일 수 있다는 점도 들 수 있다. 그래서 작품성과 오락성을 모두 충족시키는 역사 추리 소설이 드문 것이다. 그리고 너무 근대의 서양 사상에 치중해서 질리게 하는 점 또한 없지 않아 있었다. 이 작품은 그런 점들을 모두 만족시켜 주는 드문 추리 소설이다. 움베르토 에코의 <장미의 이름>처럼 어렵지도 않고 그렇다고 역사만을 강조하면서 추리적 요소가 약하지도 않다. 억지로 끼워 넣은 듯한 것도 없다. 그래서 망설이며 선택한 작품인데 의외로 보석을 얻은 느낌이 들어 기분 좋았다.
로마, 삼두정치를 하던 시대, 카이사르가 있던 시대가 배경이다. 귀족인 젊은 변호사 티투스는 어머니의 살해 소식을 접하고 살인자를 잡으려 한다. 그때 천한 대접을 받던 연극 배우가 티투스를 돕겠다고 나선다. 그들은 어머니의 살해와 카이사르 정부이자 어머니의 친구이며 티투스의 친구인 브루투스의 어머니가 잃어버린 진주 목걸이와 어머니 죽음을 연관시키지만 그것은 또 다른 살인, 신성한 무녀가 살해되면서 의구심만 증폭되며 점점 티투스의 측근으로 범인이 좁혀진다.
부제가 <베스타 무녀의 샘>인 것은 이 작품이 베스타 무녀와 관련된 이야기이기 때문이다. 우리는 보통 그 시대 사람들은 우리와 다르게 살지 않았을까 하는 환상을 품는다. 하지만 인간이 있었던 곳 어디에서나 인간의 악한 면은 늘 존재했다. 빈부의 격차, 착취, 계급의 차이, 이루어질 수 없는 사랑, 복수, 음모, 거짓 등등 이것은 인간이 사라지지 않으면 절대로 사라질 수 없는 것이다. 로마는 망했다. 그래도 인간은 사라지지 않았다. 그러니 우리 곁엔 늘 이런 어둠이 존재한다는 뜻이다. 아니 우리 안에...
요즘 역사 추리 소설이라고 표방하거나 에코를 그 어떤 작품들 <다빈치 코드>나 <천사와 악마>, <4의 규칙>보다 <단테 클럽>보다 더 깔끔하고 재미있는 작품이라고 말하고 싶다. 물론 내 주관적 입장에서지만. 어설픈 역사 끌어들이기를 시도한 작품보다 훨씬 나은 작품이라는 점은 분명하다. 마지막까지 놀라게 하는 법도 갖춘 매력적인 작품이다.

In March and April of 2002, the members of Rara-Avis, the web's premier disscussion group for all things hard-boiled, decided to poll its members on the The Top 100 Hard-Boiled Characters of the Twentieth Century.

Readers were invited to submit their top twenty votes via e-mail. In announcing the winners, co-compiler Mark Blumenthal had this to say:

"Here is our selection of the 100 (actually 111, to allow for ties) best hard-boiled characters (in literature). Although there are several many of us would not consider hard-boiled, most of our ballots had a large majority of characters who made it into the top 111... Of those authors who had more than three characters in the best 111, Dashiell Hammett had six characters and Walter Mosley, George Pelecanos, Jim Thompson, Charles Willeford, and James Ellroy had four apiece. Of those characters that debuted in the 90's Easy Rawlins and Harry Bosch received the most votes."

Seems like Mark wasn't too happy with some of the results, but personally, I was very pleased to see the high regard in which some relatively obscure characters were held, for one, and the wide variety of characters who made it, in general. If hard-boiled is more about attitude than surface trappings, then I have no problem with the final list, really. Though I'm still very conscious of how availability affects the vote. Some of my beloved pulp characters and relatively forgotten P.I.s who just made it to the list could easily rank much higher, I think, if only more people had read them. And, of course, it's a little disappointing that supporting players from popular novels (bolstered in some cases by popular films) cracked the list, while protagonists from some now difficult-to-find novels and series didn't crack it at all. Like, Jo Gar didn't make it? Bummer...

Still, a pretty good list.
