눈물 겨울뿐이다. 이곳이 현재라는 사실이...

그 골목이 품고 있는 것들

내가 이 책을, 이 사진들을 본 것은 내 못난 그리움과 아직도 품고 있는 작은 낭만 때문이다. 그것 이외에는 없다.

골목... 어린 시절 바로 코앞의 초등학교를 두고 30분이나 걸어 내가 배정받은 초등학교를 다닐 때 나는 항상 골목길로 가고 오고했다. 하루는 이 골목길, 또 하루는 저 골목길... 낮에 학교를 마치고 골목길을 따라 집에 오던 길에서 사람 한 명 마주치지 않던 날이 있었음을 나는 아직도 기억한다. 길보다 낮은 곳에 위치한 집 지붕위에서 피던 호박꽃과 호박, 얇은 담을 축대 삼아 위, 아래 동네를 나누고 비가 오면 질퍽거리고 퀴퀴한 냄새 가득하던 길... 나는 지금도 꿈속에서 그 길을 헤매곤 한다. 그건 단지 그리움일 뿐, 결코 되돌아갈 수 없음에 지닐 수 있는 음험한 낭만일 뿐이다. 

너무 낡은 집은 기와를 얹을 수가 없다. 그래서 장판과 비닐로 지붕을 덮는 것이다. 9살 때 처음으로 아버지와 여름 바닷가를 갔다 왔더니 옆집에 살던 외삼촌께서 돌아가셨더랬다. 이유는 비 온 뒤 비가 샌다고 지붕 고쳐달라는 말에 덜 마른 스레트 지붕에 올라갔다가 지붕이 무너져서 떨어지셨기 때문이다. 그 지붕을 이고 사는 이들에게 넓고 풍성하다 말하지 말기를...

우리 집도 그런 낡은 무허가 하꼬방이었다. 요즘 사람들은 하꼬방이라는 말도 모르리라. 여름이면 비가 새서 자다가 물벼락 맞기 일수고, 겨울이면 연탄가스에 중독되기 일수고, 밤중에 떠다 놓은 자리끼가 아침이면 꽁꽁 얼던 방에서 장갑을 끼고 파가를 입고 버선까지 신고 솜이불을 덮어도 손이 곱아 연필을 쥘 수도 없었던 집... 그 집에서 22년을 살았다. 우리는 그래도 잘 살았다. 불편할 게 뭐가 있으랴. 불편은 엄마의 몫이었을 뿐이다. 비가 오면 지붕에 올라가 장판과 비닐을 덮어야 했고 수돗물도 안 나와서 펌프를 쓰던 집이었으니 고장 나면 그거 고치는 것도 엄마의 일이었다. 연탄가스 때문에 부엌문을 달지도 못해서 한겨울에도 덜덜 떨며 살림해야 했던 엄마... 연탄 가는 일은 만만했을까... 그래도 화초를 기르던 엄마, 그 집이라도 쓸고 닦고 하던 엄마... 그것을 감동으로 바라본다는 것은 자식으로 결코 할 수 없는 감정이다. 미안하고 죄스러운 마음뿐... 더 일찍 알지 못하던...

지금 아파트에 이사 와서 12년을 살았다. 처음 이사 왔을 때만 낯설어 했을 뿐. 지금은 잘했다는 마음뿐이다. 그 집이 헐리지 않았더라면 우리는 아직도 그 집에서 살았을 것이고 예순이 넘어 관절염이 생긴 엄마는 아직도 지붕에 오르셨으리라. 아버지도 체중이 많이 나가 오를 수 없었던 지붕이므로...

사진을 보며 그리움은 넘친다. 그 속에 내가 살던 집과 비슷한 집도 보이고 어린 시절 나와 같은 아이들의 모습도 보인다. 하지만 그뿐이다. 다시 돌아가라면 절대 돌아가지 않을 그때... 골목이 사라진다는 것이 가난이 사라진다는 것이 된다면 얼마나 좋을까 그 생각뿐이다. 골목이 없어져 삭막한 곳이 천지가 되더라도 그곳에 살던 사람들이 가난에서 벗어난다면 그것으로 족할 것이다. 그들이 또 다른 곳에서 또 이런 고통을 감수하며 변하지 않는 삶을 산다는 것이 마음 아플 뿐... 나는 그저 눈물 겨울뿐이다. 이곳이 현재라는 사실이...
