이 작품이 대체역사를 다룬 SF라고...
오호~
그러니까 역사가 서양 중심이 아닌 동양 중심이었다면 어떠했을까를 생각해보는 작품이라...
과연 어떠했을까?
동양에서 사는 우리는 어떤 모습의 세계를 만들어낼 수 있었을까...
과학이 아닌 정신을 중시했을까?
아직도 계급에 의한 차별만이 존재했을까?
갑자기 대체역사라니 또 궁금해진다.
나는 동양의 어떤 점을 높게 평가하고 강조하고 싶은지 문득 생각하게 된다.

자폐증을 치료하기 위해 직원들을 실험도구로 삼든다?
자폐증을 가진 사람도 사회의 구성원으로 활동하고 직장생활도 한다.
마치 마이너리티리포트를 연상시킨다.
하지만 그것보다는 더 근원적인 그들을 알고 이해할 작품같다.
나는 이 책에서 무엇을 발견하게 될지...
좋은 작품을 만난 느낌이 든다.

낯설고 수상한 인간들의 이야기가 튀어올랐다!
에드거 앨런 포, 퍼트리샤 하이스미스의 뒤를 잇는 한나 틴티의 데뷔작.
불안한 가족, 삐걱거리는 결혼생활 등을 동물들과 연결지음으로써 동물의 왕국과 인간 사이의 신화와 판타지를 현대적으로 훌륭하게 조명해냈다. 인간 내면에 감춰진 비뚤어진 욕망과 폭력성에 관한 낯설고 기묘한 이야기.

이 설명, 에드거 앨런 포와 퍼트리샤 하이스미스란 단어만 가지고도 두근거리게 만드는 작품이다.
어떤 작품일지 궁금하다.
단편들의 향연속에서 우리가 사는 모습의 적나라함을 발견할 수 있을 것 같은 느낌이 든다.

단타 다음의 홈런 한방을 다시 기대해보겠다!

비를 바라는 기도 ㅣ 밀리언셀러 클럽 48
데니스 루헤인 지음, 조영학 옮김 / 황금가지 / 2006년 9월

켄지와 제나로 시리즈 다섯 번째 작품이다. 하지만 우리는 네 번째 작품부터 읽었으니 우리에게는 두 번째 작품이다. 제발 시리즈는 첫 번째 작품부터 출판을 해주시길. 시리즈를 작가가 왜 쓰는 지 그 이유를 좀 생각해 봤으면 좋겠다. 네 번째 작품을 안 읽은 독자는 네 번째 작품부터 읽으시고.

켄지... 우유부단함이냐, 아니면 정이 많은 거냐. 정이 많은 주인공이겠지만 어째 내 눈에는 우유부단하게 보인다. 이 작품에서는. 전작에서 보면 켄지는 정의냐 원칙이냐의 사이에서 원칙을 선택한다. 그리고 연인이자 파트너인 제나로와 헤어지고 빌빌거린다. 그러다가 맡은 사건이 여자 스토킹 하는 남자 겁주기였다. 그것도 뒤에 부바를 보디가드로 거느리고. 그런데 휴가를 가기 전에 잠깐 여자가 메시지를 남겼는데 휴가가 바빠서 그걸 지우고 다녀왔다. 정도 많으셔라. 그럴 수도 있지. 문제는 그 여자가 자살을 했다는 거에 있다. 그리고 그 이후 행실이 자신과 만났을 때와는 너무도 달라 냄새가 나는 것을 알고 뒤를 캐기 시작하고 누군가를 찾아냈다는 것, 그녀의 집안 사정까지 파고들게 되었다는 것이다.

이 책에서만 보자면 주인공을 켄지가 아니라 부바로 바꿨으면 좋겠다는 생각이 간절하다. 켄지, 자네가 부바를 멍청하다고 말할 머리가 있는 지 지금은 생각이 바뀌었으리라 믿네. 인간의 머리는 참으로 다양해서 한가지만으로 판단하면 안 되는데 부바 뒤에서 숨고 부바가 챙겨주는 단서를 추적하면서 누구더러 머리가 나쁘다는 것인지 켄지, 반성해라.

작품을 처음 보면서 아니 조나단 켈러맨이 쓸 만한 작품을 데니스 르헤인이 쓰다니 하고 생각했다. 거기다 켄지에게서는 로렌스 블록의 탐정 매트 스커더의 그림자까지 보이고 부바와 함께 있으니 더 그렇게 느껴졌다. 데니스 르헤인, 이러면 안 되지. 이 작가가 나를 참 곤란하게 만드는 재주가 비상하다. <미스틱 리버>를 보고 좀 그랬는데 <살인자의 섬>에서는 깜짝 놀라게 하고 <가라, 아이야 가라>에서 완전히 나를 사로잡더니만 이 작품에서 다시 나를 혼란스럽게 만든다. 이 정도는 데니스 르헤인이 아니더라도 쓸 수 있고 이런 비슷한 작품들은 많다는 얘기다. 참신하지도 않고 매력적이지도 않고 반전이 뛰어난 것도 아니고 주인공이 멋있는 것도 아니고 볼만한 거라고는 부바와 전작에서 궁금했던 부분에 대한 호기심의 만족 정도니... 다음 작품을 기다리나 마나 참... 뭐, 작품의 굴곡이야 있는 거니까 단타 다음의 홈런 한방을 다시 기대해보겠다. 데니스 르헤인, 당신만의 색깔을 찾으란 말이다~

내가 너무 비판만 했다고 이 작품이 별 볼일 없다고 생각하면 그건 오해다. 홈런 타자에게는 홈런을 기대하는 것이 당연하고 안타를 많이 쳐서 좋은 타율을 내는 타자에게는 안타를 기대하는 것이 당연하듯이 작가에게도 바라는 것이 다 다르기 때문이다. 뭐, 홈런 타자가 헛손질도 많이 하고 삼진 아웃도 많이 당한다는 거 아니까 그런 의미에서 한 얘기다.
