내 생각을 표현하는 데 도움이 되는 책

나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 구동사편과 비교하면 문장이 다소 어렵게 느껴지고 익숙하지 않은 단어들도 제법 있다. 하지만, 경제, 경제, 외교, 사회, 문화, 과학 등 성인이라면 한번씩 만해봄직한 대화 내용들이 담겨 있어 유용하다. 내가 이런 말을 했었는데, 이걸 영어로 이렇게 바꾸면 되겠구나 싶은 문구들이 많이 등장했다.

대통령 선거에 대한 이야기를 할 때, "The president is only as goo as the people who vot for him. In that sense, you are also responsible for having an underqualifed president. You should vote."(p55) 이렇게 말할 수 있을 거다.

요즘처럼 남북관계 얘기가 나오는 상황에선 통일에 대해 언급할 땐, "I think we are better off now than if we were to live with North Koreans as citizens of a unified country."(p57)라고 말할 수 있겠지? 내 생각과 유사한 예문들이 나와줘서 고마울 따름이다.

청소년 게임중독, 인터넷, 스마트폰 중독과 관련된 표현들은 중학교 수업 시간에서도 언급되는 내용이다. 여기 나온 표현 어느 것 하나 버릴 것 없이 좋다. 내 생각의 수준과 비슷하게 영어도 배워야 한다고 본다. 나는 자율주행이나 인공지능에 관한 얘길 하고 싶은데, 영어 단어는 맨날 취미나 영화, 음악 이 정도에서 맴돈다면 문제가 있다. 언어는 곧 생각을 표현하는 거니깐, 그런 면에서 내 생각을 표현하는 데 도움이 되는 책을 만나 기쁜다.

내가 암기하고 싶은 표현들.

p33 한국 기업들은 재무적인 어려움에 처하면 직원들을 해고하는 데 의존한다. Companies resort to terminating employees whenever they ae under financial strain.

p36 한국 IT 기업들은 애플과 중국 IT 기업 사이에 낀 신세가 됐어. Korean tech companies are sandwiched between Apple and Chinese IT players.

p55 대통령의 수준이 대통령의 수준을 결정하는 거야. The president is only as good as the people who vote for him.

p60 북한 사람들과 통일된 나라의 시민으로 살아가느니 지금처럼 사는 게 더 나은 것 같아. I think we are better off now than if we were to live with North Koreans as citizens of a unified country.

p61 50년 동안 들어온 똑같은 얘기야. It’s just the same kind of rhetoric we’ve heard over the last 50 years.

p67 미국은 한국 전쟁에서 우리와 같이 싸웠어. The U.S. fought side by side with us in the Korean War.

p73 역사를 왜곡한다는 말을 distort the historical facts, distort the wartime past처럼 표현할 수 있지만, whitewash를 활용하는 것도 효과적.

e.g. Japan had been whitewashing its wartime atrocities.

p84 유복한 환경에서 자라야만 행복한 삶을 살 수 있다고 믿는 젊은이들이 많아.

A lot of young people believe that a happy life can only come from a wealthy upbringing.

p86 한국은 사교육 열풍이 왜 그렇게 거세?

p92 혼전 동거가 상대방을 더 잘 알 수 있는 좋은 방법이라고 생각하지 않아?

p92 혼전 동거가 이혼율 증가에 대한 해결책이 될 수는 없어.

Premarital cohabitation can’t be our solution to the high divorce rate.

p95 ‘기울어진 운동장’이라는 표현은 영어로 not a level playing field를 번역한 말입니다. 원래 not을 뺀 level playing field가 평평한 운동장, 즉 공정한 경쟁을 일컫죠.

p104 일회용품 사용을 줄이는 것은 불편한 일이다.

Reducing the use of disposable products can be an inconvenience. (= Reducing the use of single-use products can be an inconvenience.)

p123 touch-up은 말 그대로 손을 댄다는 뜻인데, 심각한 성형수술이 아니라 약간 손보는 다른 성형시술을 가리켜 쓸 수 있는 표현.

p134 Millions of Koreans spend so many hours watching their smartphones screens. => Millions of Koreans are glued to their smartphone screens.

p134-135 In this digital era, it’s very easy to become addicted to using smart gadgets. => In this digital era, you may develop compulsions or addictions.

p139 The best way to handle hateful comments on the Internet is to ignore them. => The best way to handle trolls is to ignore them.

p159 There’s a lot of sexual content on TV. => There’s a lot of sexually suggestive content on TV.
