3편의 단편집 가운데 가장 괜찮았다!

세계 서스펜스 걸작선 3 ㅣ 밀리언셀러 클럽 21
에드 맥베인 외 지음, 제프리 디버 엮음, 홍현숙 옮김 / 황금가지 / 2005년 7월

이 단편집에서 내가 가장 좋게 생각하던 것은 중복된 작품이 없었다는 점이었다. 다른 단편집을 볼 때마다 예전에 나온 것들과 겹치는 작품이 있어 짜증이 나곤 했다. 더군다나 제목까지 틀리게 정해놓으면 독자는 속기 십상이니 이 점에 대해서만은 안심을 해도 좋으리라는 생각이 들었다. 하지만 이 3편에 와서 한 작품이 걸렸다.

도널드 웨스트레이크의 <이것이 죽음이다>, 이 작품은 예전에 <세계 베스트 미스터리 컬렉션 50 II>에 수록된 작품이다. 하지만 절판된 단편집이니 나름대로 괜찮다는 생각도 해본다. 물론 도널드 웨스트레이크의 다른 작품이었다면 더 좋았겠다는 아쉬움은 남지만 말이다.

내가 좋아하는 로스 맥도널드의 루 아처 시리즈 단편인 <수상한 금발 여인>을 읽을 수 있었다는 점과 그의 아내인 마거릿 밀러의 <협곡 너머의 이웃>이라는 작품을 볼 수 있었다는 점이 무엇보다 좋았다.

한 작품씩 살펴보자면 우선 첫 번째 작품인 에드 맥베인의 <즐겁고 즐거운 크리스마스>는 평이한 작품이었다. 분석을 하자면 반어적 표현과 그런 것을 나타낸 작품이라고 말할 수 있겠다.

두 번째 작품인 할런 앨리슨의 <번스타인 죽이기>는 이 작가의 작품 세계를 이해하면 작품이 더 매력적으로 다가올 수 있을 것이다. 이 작가는 SF 작품과 미스터리 작품 세계를 동시에 넘나드는 작가이다. 굳이 분류를 하자면 SF쪽에 더 가까운 작가다. 이 작가의 작품은 언제나 놀라운 상상력으로 가득 차 있고 시선하다.

세 번째 작품인 도널드 웨스트레이크의 <이것이 죽음이다>는 자살하는 한 남자의 이야기이다. 하지만 단순한 그런 내용이 아니다. 진짜 죽음이란 어떤 것인가를 말하는 의미심장한 작품이다. 읽고 나면 목에 걸리기 쉬우니 꼭꼭 씹어 읽어야 하는 작품이다.

네 번째 작품인 사라 파레츠키의 <비탄에 잠긴 집>은 그녀의 탐정 워쇼스키가 등장하지 않는다는 면에서는 약간의 실망을 주었지만 워쇼스키가 등장한 단편보다 더 좋았다는 점에서 박수를 보내고 싶은 작품이다. 작가와 편집자는 어떤 관계인가를 알려주는 작품이다. 작가는 돈만 많이 벌게 해주는 작품만 쓰면 되는 것이라는 사실... 독자인 우리는 어떻게 받아들여야 할지... 우리가 그들을 그렇게 만드는 것일까, 그들이 우리를 이렇게 만든 것일까... 닭과 달걀의 상관관계가 생각나는 작품이었다.

다섯 번째 작품인 미키 스필레인의 <울타리 뒤의 여자>는 작가의 작품 세계를 잘 드러내 주는 초지일관 적인 작품이다. 미키 스필레인이 어떤 작가인지는 그의 작품이 나올지도 모른다니 기대를 해보시길... 삼류 작가의 대접을 받는 작가지만 나름대로의 개성은 있는 작가고 작품이었다.

여섯 번째 작품인 로버트 바너드의 <호수 위의 남자>는 마지막에 왜 뛰어봤자 벼룩이라는 생각이 들게 하는지, 그 점이 아쉬웠다.

일곱 번째 작품인 로스 맥도널드의 <수상한 금발 여인>은 전형적이 루 아처가 등장하는 작품의 맥을 잇고 있다. 사건이 있고 여자가 숨고 그 여자를 쫓는 루 아처... 로스 맥도널드의 작품 공식이라고나 할까. 그런데 그게 뻔하면서도 매력적이니...

여덟 번째 작품인 빌 프론지니의 <인생은 카드치기>는 독특한 작품으로 이 단편집에서 마거릿 밀러의 <협곡 너머의 이웃>과 함께 가장 돋보이는 작품이라고 꼽고 싶다. 물론 할런 앨리슨의 작품도... 인생의 좌절을 맛본 사람도 살아야 한다. 하지만 언제나 자기가 하던 방식이 있다. 그 삶의 방식을 좌절도 버리게 만들기는 쉽지 않다. 그럴 때 두 가지 모두를 쫓을 것이냐 말것이냐, 그것도 어차피 우리네 인생의 몫이다. 카드를 치는 우리... 늘 포커페이스여야 한다는 서글픈 사실을 알고 있는지...

아홉 번째 작품인 에드 고먼의 <재수 옴 붙은 날>은 현진건의 <운수 좋은 날>이 왜 연상되게 만드는 지... 그것과 별 상관도 없는 작품인데 말이다. 다른 작품을 읽으며 이 작품으로 숨 고르기를 해도 좋을 것 같다.

열 번째 작품인 셔린 맥크럼의 <추억의 유물>은 처음 만나는 작가의 작품이면서도 독특하고 재미있는 작품이었다. 어릴 적 좋아했던 연예인을 커서 망가진 모습으로 만난다면 우린 어떤 기분이 들까... 내 우상이 술집에서 초라한 모습으로 앉아 술을 마시며 자신을 알아봐주는 열 명 중 한명을 만나면 기뻐하는 모습을 보고 아직도 그 옛날 꿈속에서 사는 것을 알게 된다면... 그리고 그가 도박이나 마약의 늪에 빠져 있다면 말이다. 우리의 추억은 그래도 간직할 만한 것이 될까...   

열한 번째 작품인 마거릿 밀러의 <협곡 너머의 이웃>은 정말 읽어야만 하는 작품이다. 당신이 부모라면 그래서 당신 방식대로 아이를 키우고, 그것이 잘 키우는 것이라고 생각하고 있다면 여기 당신 자녀의 생각이 있다. 한번 보시고 다시 한 번 그래도 당신의 방식이 괜찮은지 생각해 보시길 바란다.

열두 번째 작품인 존 맥도널드의 <그 무엇도 날 막을 수 없다>는 뭘 말하려는 작품인지 사실 모르겠다. 건너뛴다.

마지막 작품인 존 루츠의 <너무 젊고 부유해서 죽은 사나이>도 평범한 작품이었지만 마지막 문장은 의미심장했다. 나는 이 작품을 읽으며 어떤 것을 어겼는지 생각해 본다. 그리고 그것이 사실일까도... 무엇이 사실인지는 읽고 알아보시길...

3편의 단편집 가운데 3편이 가장 괜찮았다. 작품의 기복도 심하지 않았고 새로운 작가와 기존의 알던 작가의 작품도 적절하게 배치되면서 어느 한 작품 아주 떨어진다고 말할 작품이 없어 좋았다. 물론 여전히 번역적인 오류는 눈에 뜨이지만 말이다. 번역적인 오류 말고도 빌 프론지니의 작가 소개 페이지에서 그가 만든 탐정을 이름 없는 형사라고 소개를 한다. 나는 그 작품을 보지 못했고 우리나라에 번역된 것이 없었으니 번역자의 말만 믿었는데 탐정이라고  한다. 그 작품을 원서로 읽어보신 분이... 이런 건 조금만 조사를 해보면 알 수 있을 일인데 마지막까지 이런 사소한 부분에서의 아쉬움을 느끼게 만드니 작품집의 수준을 흠집 내는 결과가 아닌가하여 아쉽다.

하지만 제프리 디버가 엮은 단편집을 모두 읽은 지금 뿌듯함과 고마움과 약간의 실망과 아쉬움을 달래며 그래도 출판사에 감사한 마음을 전하고 싶다. 척박한 우리나라 장르 문학, 특히 추리 문학 출판에 이런 좋은 단편집을 출판해 준 점에 감사한다. 그리고 좀 더 번역과 교정에 세심한 배려를 부탁드린다. 언제 다시 만날지 기약할 수 없는 작가들... 그리고 우리나라 작가들의 분발이 있기를...
