뉴욕 타임즈 100권 리스트야 저리 가그라!

Derek Attridge (James Joyce의 전문가), Cedric Watts (Joseph Conrad와 Graham Greene의 권위자), Laura Marcus (Virginia Woolf), and David Mariott (시인이자 미국 흑인 문학의 권위자) 등등 20명의 국제적인 비평가들이 뽑은 죽기전에 읽어야할 1001권 리스트가 책으로 나왔다. 이 리스트의 특징이라면 단지 클래식이나 순수문학작품 뿐 아니라 로맨스, SF, 스릴러 등 다양한 장르를 폭넓게 아우르고 있으며 200년 이후 출간된 최신작들에도 많은 비중을 두었다는 점이다.

영국 미국에서 동시에 3월에 출간 되었지만 주 저자가 영국 사람인 탓인지 영국 부커상 수상작들이 많이 포함되어 있는게 또 하나의 특색이랄까.

이번주에 읽고있는 책도 두권이나 끼어있으니 흐뭇하다. 웬지 1001권이 얼마 안 남은 듯 싶기도 하고...

하나는 뭐였는지 밝힐 수 없고 (너무 야했슴 ^^)

하나는 이 리스트에서 일등인, 아니 그냥 맨 위에 있는 Never let me go이다. 일본계인 작가지만 너무나도 영국적인 글을 쓰는 Ishiguro를 나는 평소에 그의 엄청나게 긴 문장과 남발하는 쉼표로 한문장 읽다 숨이 모자라 쓰러지거나 문장의 처음이 기억 안 날까봐  피했었건만. (같이 보고 있던 존 버거의 너무 짧아서 허전하다 싶은 문장과 비교를 하면 더 심해진다) 이번책도 사실은 더 읽을까 말까 하던 중이었는데... 흠 끝을 봐야만 하겄다.

요즘의 느릿느릿함으로는 언제 다 읽으리? 우선 2000년 이후 책들 만이라도 올해 안에?

3월 30일,
이 봄도 가고
하루해도 또 저물어 간다.
너무나 서글퍼 봄바람에게 물었다.
"내일 아침엔 분명 떠나가고 없겠지?"

 

곡강(曲江) 가에서
이 봄을 떠나보내며,
아쉬운 마음 달랠 길 없어
이리저리 둘러본다.
보이는 건 물 위에 떨어지는 꽃잎
셀 수도 없이 어지럽게 흩날린다.

 

인생이란 나그네와 같은 것
두 발을 잠시 멈출 겨를도 없이,
날마다 앞을 향해 나아가건만
앞길은 또 얼마나 될까?

 

우리 인생에서 전쟁과 재난은
모두 다 피해 갈 수 있건만,
오로지 다가오는 늙음만은
인간 세상에 피할 곳이 없구나.

 

지나가는 봄날에 대한 감회,
어쩔 수 없는 것이라 체념하며
홀로 곡강 남쪽 나무에 기대어 선다.
오늘 이 봄을 떠나보내는 마음,
정든 이와 헤어지는 마음 같구나.

스카쟌에 대한 고찰

 

좋잖아, 까마귀면 어때!

새장 속에 갇혀서 나는 것도 잊어버린 불쌍한 새에 비하면 훨씬 낫지.

스카쟌(sukajan)이란 Yokosuka Jumper의 약칭이다. 태평양전쟁 종료 후 , 요코즈카에 미군의 주둔 베이스가 생기자 여기저기서 미군을 상대로 한 암시장이 열렸다. 그러자 몇몇 미군에 의해 낙하산 옷감인 리키드-새틴 섬유가 PX를 통해 몰래 반출되기 시작했는데, 요코즈카 암시장에는 새틴 섬유가 유독 많이 넘쳐났다. 그 새틴 섬유에 섬세한 자수를 깁어넣어 귀국군인들에게 팔기 시작한 것이 스카쟌의 유래라 할 수 있다.

그러던 것이 70-80년대에 이르러 스카쟌의 그 화려하고도 독특한 풍모에 매료된 도시의 양아(良兒)들이 입기 시작해, 폭주족과 양키족들의 선풍적인 인기를 끌게 되었는데, 스카쟌을 입는다는 것은 곧 “반항하는 청춘”의 상징이요, 거친 “야생(野生)의 세계”로의 입문을 의미하는 것이 돼 버렸다.

가뜩이나 번쩍이는 새틴 섬유의 스카쟌에 새겨진 화려한 원색의 자수는 일종의 “영역표시”로서 자신의 영역에 들어올 의사가 없는 이는 알아서 피하라는 뜻이며, 또한 자신의 영역을 침범할 의사가 있는 이들에게는 언제든지 그들의 강력한 도전을 피하지 않겠다는 단호한 의지의 표현인 것이다.

즉 스카쟌을 입는다는 것은 野性의 혼을 입는다는 것으로 주류사회를 구성하고 있는 System에 결코 길들여지지 않겠다는 욕망의 분출을 의미한다. 야생의 세계에선 인간 사회를 구성하고 있는 학벌, 지연, 연공서열따윈 존재 하지 않는다. 존재하는 것은 오로지 “순수한 자신의 힘” 그 뿐으로, 그건 자연에게서 주어진 것이기에 비겁하지도 불공평하지도 않은 것이다.

힘이란 오늘 상대방보다 우세하다고 해서 내일도 그러란 법이 없다. 또한 시간이 지날수록 힘은 상실해 가기 마련이다. 자연에는 영원한 강자(强者)란 존재하지 않는 법인 것이다. 하지만 우리 인간 사회는 어떠한지... 한번 강자가 영원한 강자이길 원해, 온갖 비겁하고도 불공평한 수단을 조직해내어 그것을 사회시스템화 해버린다. 자신의 부를 온갖 편법으로 자식에게 증여, 상속하고 자신이 한번 획득한 권력을 죽을 때까지 놓치 않으려 한다. 만약 신의 섭리가 자연에 있다면, 우리 인간사회의 법은 철저히 배덕(背德者)의 율법일 것이다.

나에게 있어서 스카쟌은 어떤 의미에선 빛바랜 청춘의 그림자라는 것일게다.

그땐 나에게 씌여져 있던 “모범생”의 이미지가 너무 싫었다. 나도 거칠고 사나운 짐승이 되고팠다. 어깨에 힘을 가득 주고 침을 “찍찍” 뱉으며, 정말 나 하고픈 대로 살고 싶었던 적이 있었더랬다. 그래서 격투기 도장도 몰래 나가고, 엄마 몰래 bike도 사기도 했지만, 언제나 “한 걸음 더 앞으로”란 자그마한 용기가 부족한 법이다. 그때나 지금이나 말이다.

홍련의 Z Ⅱ 와 스카쟌은 그런 나에 작은 빛바랜 청춘의 후회 같은 것으로 남아있다.

      하지만, 그들의 노래를 듣게 될 땐 웬지 모르게 아련해 지는건 왜 일까요?

      스카쟌을 유난히도 좋아하던 히데도 땅 속에 묻힌지 벌써 8년이 지났고, 어느새 저도 그 나이만

      큼 더 들게 되었습니다. 5월 2일이 그의 기일 이더군요... 어느새 시간은 그렇게 흘러갑니다.

"왜 나였어?" 그녀가 물었다.

환한 뉴욕의 대낮.

"천만이나 되는 사람들 가운데 어떻게 날 선택한 거지?"

"난 당신처럼 마음이 텅 비고 외로웠어. 다른 가능성이 없었던 거야."

그건 내 솔직한 대답이었고 그녀는 안심한 듯 어느새 잠이 들었다.

미하엘 크뤼거의 달빛을 쫓는 사람들 중에서

토요일 4시 32분!  미지의 여인에게서 난 한통의 전화를 받았다.

“안녕하세요. 0 00 님 댁 맞으시죠?”

“그런데요? 누구신데요?”

“본인이신가요?”

“예! 그런데 누구시죠?”

“안녕하세요. 고객님! 하나로 통신인데요. 댁 전화기를 KT 쓰시던데...”

마침 포크너의 따분하고도 지루한 “미시시피”얘기에 질려있던 터라, 난 갑자기 장난끼가 동했다.

“아! 하나로 통신이시군요. 일면식 하나 없는 고객에게 이런 친절한 전화를 다 주시고 감사합니다.”

“네? 아... 예, 근데 0 00 댁 맞으신가요?”

“예. 맞습니다. 전화 정말 잘 하신거에요.”

“네? 네.”

잠시 침묵..

“하나로 통신 인터넷 서비스 잘 쓰시고 계시죠? 그런데 전화도 저희 하나로 통신으로 바꾸시면 여러 혜택이 있습니다...”

“잠시 만요, 전 말이 길면 잘 못 알아듣습니다. 육하원칙 아시죠? 왜 하나로여야만 하는지, 육하원칙에 딱 맞게, 짧게 해주세요. 30초 드리겠습니다. 그 안에 자신의 의사를 정확히 육하원칙에 맞추어 해주세요. 지금 카운트 들어갑니다.”

“어? 네?”

무척이나 당황한 미지의 여인은 잠시 후 수화기를 내려버렸다.

미지의 여인으로부터의 전화는 항상 내가 먼저 끊어오던 터였다.

그런데 오늘은 그녀가 먼저 전화를 끊어버린 것이다. 

낯선 타자와의 대화는 언제나 불편하다. 침묵은 나에게 그리 불편한 것이 아니지만, 낯선 타자와 함께 마주친 침묵은 정말로 힘겹다. 이 기묘한 침묵은 손가락과 발등을 바삐 만들고, 괜스레 침이 마르는 것이다. 그러다 이 무거움을 더 이상 견디지 못한 사람이 먼저 입을 떼게 된다. 그리고 그의 입에서 나온 첫마디는 언제나 five W's and one H중 하나이다.

21세기! 지금 현생인류간의 모든 소통은 five W's and one H가 지배하고 있는 것이다.

그렇다면 사랑에 있어서는... 어떨까?

WHEN

        1)언제부터 날 사랑했어?

        2)우리가 언제부터 손을 잡게 되었지?

        3)우리가 처음 키스한 날이 언제야?

WHERE

       1)우리가 처음 만난 곳이 어디인지 기억나?

       2)우리 어디서 만날까?

       3)가장 가고 싶은 곳이 어디인지 말해봐. 거기로 가자.

WHAT

      1)지난 월요일 우리 뭐했냐. 기억나?

      2)네가 지난번 갖고 싶다고 했던 거. 뭐였냐?

      3)내일 너 뭐할 거야?

WHY

      1)넌 왜 날 사랑하니?

      2)왜 그렇게 화가 난거야? 이유가 뭐야?

      3)날 왜 이렇게 힘들게 하는 거야. 넌 더 이상 날 사랑하지 않아. 그렇지?

WHO

      1)누구야? 지금 방금 네 옆에 있던 사람...

      2)내가 누구랑 있던 넌 상관 하지마! 넌 나한테 딱 그 정도 일 뿐이야.

      3)지금 그 사람은 누구랑 있을까? 과연 우리가 사랑을 했을까...

HOW

      1)어떻게 나한테 이럴 수 있어? 이렇게 잔인한 짓을 어떻게 나에게

      2)어떻게 우리 사랑이 끝나버린걸까?

      3)그 사람을 어떻게 하면 잊을 수 있을까?

언젠가부터 우린 항상 무언가를 설명하려 애써왔다. 심지어 사랑하는 사람에게조차도...

이젠 그만두어도 되지 않을까. 뭔가를 설명하려 애쓰는 짓 따윈!

언제나 의미가 말이 되면 변질되어버리기 마련이지만, 때론 구차히 뭔가 말하려 애쓰지 않아도 나의 침묵을 그저 묵묵히 받아주는 그런 사람이 무척이나 그리워진다.

난 자네를 정말 많이 좋아했어. 테리. 미소 한번과, 가벼운 인사 한번, 그리고 손짓 한번과 여기 저기 조용한 Bar에서 술 몇 잔 마신 것만으로도 그렇게 됐지, 그러는 동안 즐거웠네. “잘 가게. Amigo. 안녕히!”라는 말은 하지 않겠어. 그 말은 이미 진짜 의미가 있었을 때 했지, 그 말이 정말 슬프고 외롭고 마지막이었을 때 했던 거야.

ps> 전 Alone together라는 곡을 참 좋아합니다. 인간은 항상 혼자일 수도, 항상 함께 있을 수도 없는 존재입니다.  그 모순성이야말로 인간을 단적으로 말해주는 본성임에 틀림없다고 믿고 있죠. 그래서 이 곡을 좋아하는지도 모릅니다.  Alone together는 1932년 뮤지컬 "flying collars"에 처음 삽입되었습니다. 하지만 그 뮤지컬은 어느새 잊혀져 버리고, 이 곡만이 다행히도 살아남았죠. Popular한 곡인만큼 여러 version이 있습니다만 제가 가장 좋아하는 버전은 케니 도햄의 것입니다. 서정적이고 감성적인 쳇 베이커, 음울하고 철학적인 에릭 돌피, 감성과 테크닉 모두에서 완벽한 조화를 이루는 마일즈 데이비스, 정감이 넘치고 절묘한 인터플레이가 매력적인 짐 홀&론 카터, 광폭하면서도 처절한 음색의 아치 세프 등등 수많은 버전이 존재하지만, 쓸쓸하지만 왠지 따스한, 서글픈 꿈같은 느낌을 주는 건 오직 케니 도햄뿐입니다.

섬세함과 품위를 겸비한 지적인 재즈

1950∼60년대 쿨의 시대 - 앤서니 밍겔라의 <리플리>

“자기 생존의 특질에, 불만에, 그리고 자기 오르가슴의 기쁨, 음탕, 염증, 절규, 절망 등의 무한한 변주에 음성을 부여한 것. 재즈는 오르가슴이다.” - 노먼 메일러

부르디외는 음악적 취향이야말로 가장 첨예한 계급적 표지를 드러내는 상징자본이라고 말한다. 그렇다면 일개 호텔 벨보이인 리플리가 디키의 옷을 빌린 뒤 이카루스의 날개를 달고 지중해의 하늘 끝까지 날아오를 수 있는 비결은? 바로 바흐의 <이탈리안 협주곡>을 칠 수 있는 손가락이다. 그리고 디키의 아버지가 흘린 ‘재즈광 디키’라는 단서를 신분상승의 힌트로 알아들을 수 있는 재치다. 쳇 베이커가 남자인지 여자인지도 모르던 리플리가 <My Funny Valentine>을 부른 가수가 누구인지 알 수 있게 되고, 장차 따라 부를 수 있게까지 되면서(그는 찰리 파커의 음악을 구분할 줄 알게 되면서 혼자만의 재즈 수업을 끝낸다. 재즈 수업은 디키를 만나기 위한 신분상승의 사다리다), 신분 위조의 게임이 가능해진다.

디키의 아버지는 일면식도 없는 리플리의 피아노 솜씨 하나만을 보고서, 이탈리아에 있는 천방지축 아들 디키를 잡아오라고 명을 내리는 것이다. 그런데 리플리의 쳇 베이커를 흉내낸 목소리엔 나르시시즘과 질투와 불안이 엇박자와 당김음의 소용돌이 속으로 빨려들어가고 있다. 나른하고 감각적이며 도회적인 선율은 리플리의 디키에 대한 선망을 음표로 바꿔놓은 것 같다. <리플리>(1999)에 나오는 쿨 재즈는, 베트남전과 쿠바사태라는 폭풍우를 맞기 직전의 1950년대 미국 서해안의 맑디 맑은 하늘을 닮았다. 디키의 아버지는 돈은 있을지 모르지만, 곧 푸른 하늘을 뒤덮을 폭풍우는 짐작도 하지 못한다.

이른바 쿨이라고 불리는 가볍고 산뜻한 재즈는 밥처럼 감정을 격하게 드러내는 대신 초연하면서도 지적인 재즈였다. 찰리 파커의 영향권에서 떨어져 나온 마일스 데이비스로부터 쿨 재즈가 비롯되었다. 전쟁의 참화를 피해 미국으로 망명한 클래식 작곡가의 영향, 흑인이 아닌 중산층 백인의 감수성이 그 시대 ‘쿨’한 문화와 맞물려 돌아가면서 시대는 밥의 격정 대신 섬세하고 품위있는 쿨 재즈를 자신의 배경음악으로 택했다. 쿨 재즈의 아이콘으로 떠오른 쳇 베이커는 마치 제임스 딘처럼 소비되었다. 쿨 재즈를 소비하고자 하는 수많은 모던한 ‘리플리들’이 그를 환대했다. 1954년 캘리포니아에서 녹음한 <Chet Baker Sings>엔 언제라도 부서질 듯한 연약하고 중성적이며 탐닉적인 쳇 베이커의 목소리가 있다.

<리플리>는 이런 쿨 재즈로 자신을 미학적으로 포장하는 디키의 욕망을 전시하며, 디키의 욕망을 욕망하는 리플리의 곁눈질도 함께 보여준다. 술집에서 리플리가 쳇 베이커를 흉내내며 <My Funny Valentine>을 부르는 장면은, 재즈가 블루스와 아프리카 음악전통과 리듬 앤드 블루스의 혼합을 넘어서서 중산층적 취향의 영역으로 들어와 있음을 보여준다. 흔히 재즈에 대한 취향을 자랑할 때 그것이 쳇 베이커나 스탄 게츠의 말쑥한 웨스트코스트적 백인 재즈에 국한되는 건 리플리가 단수가 아니라 복수(여피나 보보스족)이기 때문이다.

마일스 데이비스의 다른 재즈사적인 걸작을 제쳐놓고, 아름다운 소품에 가까운 <Blue Moods> 앨범의 <Nature Boy>를 디키의 목욕장면에 틀어놓는 이유도 여기에 있다. 옷을 벗은 디키가 욕조에서 섬세하게 물방울을 떨어뜨리며 길고 게으른 손가락으로 체스를 움직일 때, 리플리는 한없이 부러운 표정을 짓고 디키의 벗은 몸을 핥듯이 바라보며 ‘욕조에 들어갈 수 있는지’를 묻는다. 이때 나른한 서정과 권태롭기까지 한 슬픔이, 마일스 데이비스의 메마르면서도 서정적인 트럼펫 선율로 흐른다. 디키는 거울에 비치는 자신의 엉덩이에 나르시시즘을 느끼면서 동시에 리플리의 선망을 알아차린다. 디키의 엉덩이를 바라보는 리플리의 눈동자엔 ‘쿨’을 소유하고자 하는 선망이 넘실댄다. 감각을 미세하게 건드리는 이런 순간을 쿨 재즈만큼 폼나게 리듬으로 만들 수 있는 음악이 또 있을까.
