세 작가의 추리소설

다른 사람들은 어떤지 모르겠지만, 내게 가장 쉽게 읽히는 장르의 글은 에세이와 추리소설이다. 에세이는 아무래도 저자의 사적인 생활이 알게 모르게 드러나니까 친밀함이 느껴지고 또 남의 생활을 훔쳐보는 은근한 재미 때문에 잘 읽히는 것이겠고, 추리소설은 무슨 일이 일어날까 궁금해서 페이지를 넘기는 손길이 빨라지게 마련이다. 심지어는 결말이 궁금해서 미리 뒷편을 뒤적이게까지 된다.

새해를 맞아서는 되지도 않는 결심 같은 걸 하는 대신에, 평소에는 시간이 나지 않아서 못 읽는 추리소설을 쌓아두고 읽었다. 마이클 코널리의 Chasing the dime, 제프리 디버의 The vanished man, The garden of beast, The Twelfth card, Twisted, 그리고 데니스 르해인의 Shutter Island.

이 세 저자가 특별히 출중해서 골라 읽는 것은 아니고, 저자의 이름을 알게 되니 서점에서 아는 이름이 적힌 책을 골라들게 되어서 같은 작가의 책을 여럿 읽게 된 것인데, 생각해보니 세 저자의 스타일에 흥미로운 차이가 있다.

마이클 코널리의 소설은 긴박하게 빨리 읽히지만 구조는 의외로 느슨한 편이다. 그 대신의 코널리 소설의 매력은 행간으로 간간이 드러나는 인물들의 인간적인 면에 있다. 아동 성학대와 관련된 Chasing the dime의 주인공의 과거와 현재라거나, 코널리가 창조한 현직 탐정 전직 수사관 해리 보쉬의 가족사 (전직 수사관 현직 카지노 카드 딜러인 아내와 어린 딸) 같은 배경이 코널리 소설을 다른 추리소설과 구분시킨다.

제프리 디버의 추리물은 범죄현장에 남겨진 단서를 따라서 범죄자를 찾아내는 과정에 초점을 둔다. 그의 가장 잘 알려진 두 주인공은 링컨 라임과 아멜리아 삭스이지만, 진짜 주인공은 범죄자와 그가 남기는 단서, 수사과정에서의 추리와 뒤틀림이다. 지면에서의 라임과 삭스의 개인적 매력은 최소한도로 유지되며 수사과정에 비하면 그 중요성이 훨씬 덜한 것으로 취급된다.

<미스틱 리버>로 유명한 데니스 르해인은 반면 심리 묘파에 많은 지면을 할애하는 데 그 치밀함이 가끔 독서를 피로하게 한다. 단편 모음집 Twisted의 서문에서 디버는 추리물의 한계에 대해 이렇게 말한다. 추리물은 어디까지나 독자의 즐거움을 목표로 하며 그런 이유로 어떤 플롯을 따르건 귀결은 악인이 처벌받고 선한 이가 보상받는 것으로 미리 정해지게 된다고. 디버가 추리물 작가의 독자에 대한 의무로 간주하는 이런 결정된 귀결 같은 것을 데니스 르해인은 무시하면서 모골이 송연해지는 엔딩으로 종종 책을 끝내곤 한다.

이 세 가지 종류의 추리물 중에 어느 것이 가장 마음에 드는지 아직 잘 모르겠군.

결혼 전에 물었어야 했을 열다섯 가지 질문

작년 (2006) 뉴욕타임즈 12월 17일자에 따르자면, 우리 모두가 결혼 전에 물었어야  했을 열다섯 가지 질문이 있다는데, 그것들은 다음과 같다.

내 생각에는 장장 열다섯 개나 되는 목록을 늘어놓는 대신,단 한 가지를 묻는 것으로 족할 듯 하다. 미래에도 지금과 같이 한결같을 것인가? 누가 그 질문에 답을 할 수 있담?

1) 아이를 낳을 것인가? 낳을 거라면, 누가 그 아이를 돌볼 것인가?
Have we discussed whether or not to have children, and if the answer is yes, who is going to be the primary care giver?

2) 상대방의 경제적 의무와 목표는 각각 무엇이며 지출과 수입이 어느 정도 일치하기를 원하는가?
Do we have a clear idea of each other’s financial obligations and goals, and do our ideas about spending and saving mesh?

3) 가사노동은 누가 얼마나 할 것인가?
Have we discussed our expectations for how the household will be maintained, and are we in agreement on who will manage the chores?

4) 신체적 정신적 건강에 관련한 모든 과거사를 알고 있는가?
Have we fully disclosed our health histories, both physical and mental?

5) 상대가 내가 원하는 만큼 애정표현을 해주는가?
Is my partner affectionate to the degree that I expect?

6) 성적 필요와 선호도, 두려움을 공개적으로 논할 수 있는가?
Can we comfortably and openly discuss our sexual needs, preferences and fears?

7) 안방에 티비를 들일 것인가?
Will there be a television in the bedroom?

8) Do we truly listen to each other and fairly consider one another’s ideas and complaints?

9) Have we reached a clear understanding of each other’s spiritual beliefs and needs, and have we discussed when and how our children will be exposed to religious/moral education?

10) Do we like and respect each other’s friends?

11) Do we value and respect each other’s parents, and is either of us concerned about whether the parents will interfere with the relationship?

12) What does my family do that annoys you?

13) Are there some things that you and I are NOT prepared to give up in the marriage?

14) If one of us were to be offered a career opportunity in a location far from the other’s family, are we prepared to move?

15) Does each of us feel fully confident in the other’s commitment to the marriage and believe that the bond can survive whatever challenges we may face?

질문

사랑하는 연인이 옥상에서 동반자살을 하기로 했는데, 정해진 시각에 상대가 나타나지 않았다면 옥상에 올라온 사람은 어떻게 해야 하나, 라거나, 동일 시각에 각자의 목숨을 끊기로 했는데 한명은 성공하고 한명은 실패한다면, 성공할 것인가 실패할 것인가, 라거나, 그런 질문이 갑자기 무척 중요하게 생각될 때가 있다.  "생은 다른 곳에"라는 모토의 허망함을 아는 사람은, 죽은 자 쪽이 뭐니뭐니 해도 속 편한 쪽이라고 생각하는 사람일까, 아니면 개똥으로라도 이승에서 구르는 게 났다고 생각하는 사람일까?

인간은 오직 한 번 죽는다는 믿음으로 담대한 자와 죽는 데 수반하는 고통의 시간이 얼마나 길지는 아무도 모른다고 생각하는 결벽증의 소유자 중에 삶에 더 진지한 사람은 누구일까?

이십일 동안 한 숨도 못 자고 한 끼니도 못 먹었는데 수면과 식사 중에 하나만 고를 수 있다면 어느 것이 더 현명한 선택일까?

근본적인 질문이라는 것이 없다면, 근본적인 해결책이라는 게 있을 수 있을까?
