내 젊은 날에 아폴로 싸롱이 있었다.
아폴로 싸롱은 건물 지하라 지상에서의 출입이 다소 번거로웠다. 일단 건물 현관으로 들어선 뒤 함정처럼 마련된, ‘ㄷ’자형 층계를 천천히 돌면서 내려가야 했다. 천천히 내려갈 수밖에 없는 이유는 층계가 비좁고 가팔랐기 때문이다. 그래서 층계를 내려가기 전 걸음을 멈추고 서서‘혹시 층계 아래에서 올라오는 이가 없는지’살펴야 했다.
층계의 끝자락에 다다르면 여닫이 싸롱 문이 눈앞을 가로막듯 나타나 그 문을 여는 순간 지하공간의 음악이 큰 파도처럼 와락 덮쳐들었다. 그 음악이 본시 잔잔한 것이었다면 그러지 않았겠지만 귀청 떨어질 듯 요란한 팝송인 경우가 잦아, 사실은 그 여닫이문에 다다르기 전 층계 내려갈 때부터 귀에 들려왔다.
심지어는 건물 밖 골목에까지 그 음악이 들려오기도 했다. 톰 존스의 ‘Delilah’나 ‘I WHO HAVE NOTHING’ 같은 경우가 그러했다. 우리나라 토종 가수 조영남이 번안해 부른 게 있어 그 스토리가 잘 알려져 있는 Delilah. ‘자기가 없는 새에 다른 사내와 불륜을 저지른 여자를 살해하며 울부짖는 어떤 사내’의 스토리였다.
“I saw the light on the night that I passed by her window”
하며 시작할 때부터 톰 존스의 목소리는 격하고 우렁찼다. 그녀 집 창가에 닿기도 전에 이미 불륜 사실을 확신한 듯한 절규다.
노래 중간에 “My my my… Delilah. Why why why … Delilah” 할 때는 지하공간의 딱히 갈 데 없는 젊음들이 따라 부르기도 했다. 절정은 사내가 그녀를 살해한 부분이다. “She stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more.”
‘그녀가 나를 보며 웃고 서 있었는데, 잠시 후 나는 내 손에 칼이 쥐어 있고 그녀가 더 이상 나를 보고 웃을 수 없게 되었음을 깨달았다’는 뜻이니, 칼로써 연인을 살해한 순간을 그처럼 멋지게 표현할 수가 없었다. 그런 뒤 톰 존스는 다시 절규한다.
“My my my … Delilah. Why why why… Delilah”
구약성경의‘삼손과 데릴라’ 이야기에서 따왔다는 톰 존스의 Delilah. 당시 인구가 10만을 겨우 넘은 좁은 춘천에서 방학을 맞았으니 딱히 갈 곳 없는 젊음들이, 평지의 물이 땅 밑으로 고이듯 지하공간에 모여 그렇게 시간을 보내었다.
72년 즈음의 그 겨울… 내 젊은 날에 아폴로 싸롱이 있었다.

이 수필에 나오는 아폴로 싸롱은 70년대 춘천 시내 한복판에 있었던 음악다방의 이름입니다. 당시 젊은이들이 커피 한 잔을 시켜놓고서 종일 팝송과 송창식 같은 우리나라 젊은 가수들의 노래를 감상했습니다. 흡연은 허락됐지만 음주는 허락되지 않았던 나름의 멋진 음악 감상실이었습니다. ‘싸롱’이란 이름 때문에 요즈음의 젊은이들에게 오해 살 수 있어서 뒤늦게 무심이 밝히는 것입니다.
