줌파의 글을 사랑한다면...

8개의 cd가 들어 있는 오디오 북이다. Sarita Choudhury가 part one 의 Unaccustomed Earth/hell-heaven/a choice of accommodations/only goodness/nobody's business의 단편들을 읽어 주고  Ajay Naidu가 part  two hema and kaushik을 읽어 준다 hema and kaushik중 year's end와 going ashore는 아주 여러번 듣고 또 듣고 있다. 나는 아주 조용한 밤에 naidu가 읽어 주는 목소리로 kaushik의 삶의 여정을 따라간다.  kaushik은 미국의 끝 메인의 바닷가에서 한해의 마지막을 보낸다.

	i had no idea where to go, but i got on the highway and started driving north. i quickly left massachusetts, driving  through a small piece of new hampshire and over the bridge into maine. as i approached portland, i turned onto a smaller, two-lane road that occasionally hugged the sea.

그는 세차게 출렁거리는 파도를 보면서 휘몰아치는 감정을 억누른다.

	now and again I saw the water, little islands and sriped lighthouses and tiny spits of land. it was too brutally cold to get out of the car, but occasionally I did, to look at ocean or explore a bit of trail.

캐나다의 펀디만 끝으로 가서 자신의 어머니의 사진이 들어 있는 신발 상자를 파묻을 적당한 곳을 발견한다.

	one day close to the canadian border, walking along cliffs overlooking the bay of fundy, I found a spot that was particularly striking.  the moon's first light was shining down when I was done, and I walked back, aided by that same beam of light, to my car.

그리고 전 세계를 떠도는 사진작가가 된 kaushik은 로마의 트라스테베레에 허름한 아파트에 머물고 있을 무렵 아주 우연히 hema를 만난다.그리고 두사람이 마지막으로 함께 갔던 곳 볼테라에서 에트루리아 인들의 유적지를 따라 걸어간다 그리고 그 길목에서 합창하는 소년 소녀들의 모습과 마주친다.

	they entered a small piazza where she was aware everywhere of children, boys and girls of seven,eghit and ten, swarming around them as if a school had just been dismissed.

hema의 시선을 따라 두사람의 과거로 잠시 거슬러 올라간다.

	the italian children, eager for christmas's approach, calling out buon natale as they greeted one another ,were embracing in the cold air, their youthful exitement infectious and pure, so much so that hema' heart leapt with theirs. in ten years, she imagined, these boys and girls would begin to fall in love with one another; in another five, their own children would be at their feet.

실제로 이 부분을 듣게되면 가슴이 뭉클하다. 그들이 함께 했던 마지막 순간에서 죽음의 그늘이 느껴졌다. 그리고 kaushik이 물속에 가라앉았던곳 태국의 카오락 

	the sea was as warm and welcoming as a bath. his feet touched the bottom, and so he let go.

그리고 마지막 몇 단락 이어지는 hema의 독백...  kaushik의 운명은 여기 까지다. 나는 kaushik의 시선을 따라 움직이며 잠시 pause 버튼을 누르고 눈을 감고 그의 모습을 떠올려 본다.

	she told hin about the etruscans'love of the natural world, their belief in signs and portents, their obsession with the journey out of life.

고대 에투라인들의 연인들처럼  내 마음속에 hema and kaushik이 고유명사처럼 새겨진다.
만약 이 오디오북이 줌파의 목소리로 녹음 되었다면 어땠을까?
나는 그녀의 다음 스토리를 기다린다. the new yorker를 통해 먼저 공개 될까? 설레이지만 인생은 결코 헤피엔딩일수 없다는 그녀의 말에 조금 두렵다. 여운이 깊은 그녀의 글 가슴에 쿡 박히듯 쓰라린다.
