영화 헤드윅(Hedwig and the Angry Inch)을 처음 만난 건 국내 개봉 전인 2002년 여름 부천판타스틱영화제에서였죠. 심야상영 프로그램에 세번째 정도로 끼어 있어 우연히 보게 됐지만, 정말 잠이 확 달아나는 영화였답니다(졸음이 쏟아지는 새벽 3시경 이 영화를 본다고 생각해 보세요. 결국 마지막에 약간 졸긴 했지만...).
드랙퀸이란 색다른 소재, 경쾌한 록음악과 간간히 나오는 애니메이션, 그리고 시종일관 판타스틱한 분위기...
나중에 이 영화가 뉴욕 오프브로드웨이에서 공연 중인 뮤지컬을 영화한 작품이란 걸 알게 됐어요. 주로 오페라의 유령이나 레미제라블 같은 고전적인 뮤지컬에 빠져 있던 내겐 정말 색다른 경험이었던 셈이죠. 이런 뮤지컬도 다 있구나...
1년쯤 뒤 국내 라이선스로 나온 뮤지컬 버전 앨범을 구해 들었고 또 지난달엔 DVD를 구해 다시 이 영화를 보게 됐습니다. 다시 보니 확실히 그 진가를 느낄 수 있더군요. 특히 뮤지컬 초연 당시의 화면이 생생히 살아있는 1시간 30분짜리 메이킹 다큐멘터리는 감동 그 자체였습니다.
얼마 전 홍대에 갔다가 헤드윅 영화상영과 함께하는 헤드윅 밴드 공연 포스터를 본 적이 있는데, 과연 언제쯤 우리나라에서 뮤지컬 헤드윅 공연을 볼 수 있을까요?
Tip 1. 지금 흘러 나오는 'Wicked Little Town'이란 서정적인 노래는 작품에선 토미와 헤드윅 버전이 따로 있는데 그중 영화 마지막에 존 카메론 미첼이 부르는 헤드윅 버전입니다.
Tip 2.혹시 모르시는 분들을 위해 깜짝 놀랄만한 사진을 하나 소개하죠. 헤드윅 DVD에 실린 다큐멘터리를 보신 분은 아시겠지만 이 영화의 주연이자 감독, 각본을 도맡은 존 카메론 미첼(사진 오른쪽)의 실제 얼굴이랍니다. 전혀 딴 사람 같죠.
