소설이 이렇게 아름다울 수 있다니.

미국 와이오밍 주를 배경으로 한 11편의 단편 소설 모음집.

산업화가 진행되면서 점점 소외되고 있는 지역, 황량한 자연만큼이나 거칠고 가난한 사람들이 사는 곳, 와이오밍. 여기 나오는 등장 인물들은 살면서 자신이 하고 싶은 대로 되는 일은 얼마 없다는 사실을 있는 그대로 받아들이는 동시에, 자신의 몸 속에 숨어 있는 자연의 소리에 귀를 기울이며 살아간다. 때로는 자신의 행동을 자기 스스로도 이해하지 못하는 채.
내가 한 번 가 보지도 못한 곳을 배경으로 하고 있고, 나와는 아주 거리가 먼 등장 인물들이 주인공으로 나오고 있지만, 이 작품은 살아가면서 겪는 이들의 절망이나 고통이 그대로 내게까지 와 닿을 수 있도록 잘 쓰여져 있다.

이 소설들의 문장은 정말 말할 수 없이 아름답다. 특히 <외딴 해안>과 <브로크백 마운틴>의 경우 작품 전체를 밑줄긋기 해두고 싶을 만큼 문장 하나하나가 아름답고 마음에 와 닿았다. 하루키 이후로 이렇게 참신하고 감성을 자극하는 비유를 쓰는 작가를 처음 보았다. 번역본임에도 불구하고 문장의 아름다움을 이 정도로 느낄 수 있다는 것은 대단한 일이다.(번역 자체도 신경을 많이 쓴 티가 난다.)

영화화되어 많이 유명해진 <브로크백 마운틴>의 경우 역시 이 소설집의 백미이다. 나는 영화를 먼저 보았는데, 소설을 읽는 내내 영화 생각이 나서 조금 안타까웠다. 소설을 먼저 접했다면 더 감동적으로 읽을 수 있었을 텐데.. 내용을 미리 알고 있는 상태에서 소설을 읽는 것만큼 싱거운 일도 별로 없기 때문이다.(하지만 소설을 다 읽고 나니 영화가 아주 잘 만들어졌다는 걸 다시 한 번 느낄 수 있었다.)

<벌거숭이 소>, <블러드 베이>, <목마른 사람들>, <아름다운 박차>, <주유소까지 55마일> 등은 그 지역에서 전해 내려 오는 설화를 모티브로 쓰여져 있는데, 그만큼 우의적이고 생각할 여지를 많이 주는 매력적인 작품들이었다.

하루키의 '노르웨이의 숲'에서 주인공 와타나베의 선배인 나가사와는 이런 말을 했다. 나는 죽은 지 30년이 채 안 된 작가의 책은 읽지 않는다고. 만약 그랬다가 이와 같이 아름다운 소설집을 놓친다면 그 얼마나 안타까운 일인가, 하는 생각이 문득 든다.

우리 인생의 단면들을 아름답고도 날카롭게 잘라서 보여주고 있는 점이 아주 탁월하지만, 분위기가 너무 어두워 읽고 있으면 힘들어지는 부분이 있어서 별 한 개를 뺐다.

The second USS Thresher (SSN-593) was the lead ship of its class of nuclear-powered attack submarines in the United States Navy. Her loss at sea during deep-diving tests in 1963(10 April) is often considered a watershed event in the implementation of the rigorous submarine safety program SUBSAFE.

In company with SKYLARK (ASR-20), THRESHER put to sea on 10 April 1963 for deep-diving exercises. In addition to her 16 officers and 96 enlisted men, the submarine carried 17 civilian technicians to observe her performance during the deep-diving tests. Fifteen minutes after reaching her assigned test depth, the submarine communicated with SKYLARK by underwater telephone, apprizing the submarine rescue ship of difficulties. Garbled transmissions indicated that--far below the surface--things were going wrong. Suddenly, listeners in SKYLARK heard a noise "like air rushing into an air tank"--then, silence.

Efforts to reestablish contact with THRESHER failed, and a search group was formed in an attempt to locate the submarine. Rescue ship RECOVERY (ASR-43) subsequently recovered bits of debris, including gloves and bits of internal insulation. Photographs taken by bathyscaph TRIESTE proved that the submarine had broken up, taking all hands on board to their deaths in 5,500 of water, some 220 miles east of Boston. THRESHER was officially declared lost in April 1963.

Subsequently, a Court of Inquiry was convened and, after studying pictures and other data, opined that the loss of THRESHER was in all probability due to a casting, piping, or welding failure that flooded the engine room with water. This water probably caused electrical failures that automatically shutdown the nuclear reactor, causing an initial power loss and the eventual loss of the boat.

둘 다 정말 아름다운 꽃이라도 생각하시지 않는지?

깊은 곳에서부터 우러나오는 매력이 가득한 보랏빛.

보랏빛 물에 방금, 살짝 담갔다 뺀 듯 농담도 완벽하다.

우리 집 식구는 가끔 붓꽃을 제비꽃인 줄 알고 "제비꽃 종류 중에 이런 잎사귀를 가지고 있는 것도 있었어?"

하기도 할 정도로, 조금만 더 얼굴을 가까이 대고 보면 많이 다르지만

자매처럼, 닮은 곳도 참 많은 꽃-제비꽃과 붓꽃.

산에서 들에서

누가 비료며 영양분이며 제공해 주지 않아도

알아서 쑥쑥 잘 자라는, 하지만 여린 꽃들.

앞으로는 두 꽃이 비슷하게  생겼다고 말하는 게 아니라

두꽃이 거의 비슷하게 아름답다고 말해야겠다.
