라스베이거스의 CSI와 마이애미의 CSI를 작가가 어떻게 다르게 그리고 있나를 보여주는 작품...

이 작품은 라스베이거스의 CSI와 마이애미의 CSI를 작가가 어떻게 다르게 그리고 있나를 보여주는 작품이다. 이 작품은 라스베이거스의 CSI가 본 편이라면 그의 속편에 해당되는 작품이다. 그러므로 마이애미의 CSI는 덜 과학적으로 등장한다. 그리셤과 달리 호레이쇼가 직감을 믿는다는 것이 첫 번째 다른 점이다. 그래서 사건에 접근하는 방식도 다르다. 그리셤의 CSI는 과학적 장비를 많이 사용해서 작품에 그에 대한 언급이 많아 사건 자체가 거창하거나 복잡할 필요가 업는 반면 마이애미의 CSI는 과학적 장비를 다루는 장면이 덜 등장하므로 사건이 좀 더 복잡해지고 범인들과의 싸움도 형사와 비슷해야 한다. 그래서 어떤 사람은 라스베이거스의 CSI를, 어떤 사람은 마이애미의 CSI를 좋아할 듯 싶다. 범인이 분명한 살인자가 증거 불충분으로 풀려나자 그리셤은 마이애미의 호레이쇼에게 그의 신병 확보를 부탁한다. 하지만 범인은 토막 난 시체로 발견이 되고 그것은 마치 마피아의 행동같이 보여진다. 범인, 살인자는 죽었지만 또 다른 살인자가 생겼으니 이들을 잡을 차례다.

옛 말에 공은 닦은 대로 가고 죄는 지은 대로 간다고 했다. 그 말이 딱 맞는 작품이다. 아니면 눈에는 눈, 이에는 이, 하는 식으로 살인자에겐 살인자로이던가... 여기에 정의가 설 틈은 없다. 하긴 언제 정의 비슷한 것이라도 있기는 했는지조차 의문이지만...

처음에는 드라마보다 덜 하다는 생각을 했는데 의외로 재미있다. 가볍게 볼 수 있는 작품이다. 요즘 추리 소설 기근 사태를 맞아 그나마 숨통이 트이는 듯 하다. 다음 작품을 기대해 보겠다.

우리만 80년대 <살인의 추억>처럼 머물러 있을 수는 없는 노릇 아닐까...

어떤 작품은 책이 낫기도 하고 어떤 작품은 영화나 드라마가 낫기도 하다. 이 작품은 드라마가 낫다. 그렇다고 책이 아주 나쁘다는 것은 아니다. 드라마로 보는 것이 더 좋다는 뜻이다. 드라마로 만들어진 것이 책으로 나왔으니 당연한 일이라 생각된다. 그래도 볼만은 하다. 추리 소설적 관점, 치밀한 사건, 살인, 범인의 두뇌 플레이나 경찰의 끈질긴 추적을 생각하지 않고 과학적 증거에 따른 방법만을 중심적으로 본다면 말이다.

이 작품은 두 사건이 번갈아 등장한다. 한 사건은 라스베이거스에서 일년 전 실종된 주부가 냉동시체로 발견된 사건이고 다른 사건은 학회에 참석한 그리섬과 사라가 눈 속에 불에 탄 시체를 발견하면서 발이 묶인 호텔에서 겪는 사건이다. 그들의 사건은 CSI가 하는 일이 무엇인가를 정확하게 보여준다. 그것은 과학적 증거 찾기다. 온갖 장비를 동원해서, 없으면 주변의 것을 맥가이버가 이용하듯 만들어서라도 증거를 수집하고 수집한 증거를 토대로 범인을 잡는 것이 어떠한 것인가를 보여주는 것이다. 이 작품의 의의는 이런 일이 우리나라 경찰계에서도 일어났으면 하는 바람을 갖는데 있다고 하겠다. 미국만은 못하겠지만 미해결 사건이 늘어나고 증거가 점차 중시되는 상황에서 우리만 80년대 <살인의 추억>처럼 머물러 있을 수는 없는 노릇 아닐까... 물론 이런 책이나 드라마를 높은 사람들이 보지는 않겠지만 적어도 이런 것이 있다는 사실을 국민이 알아 그들을 인도해야 하지 않을까 싶다. 이제 믿을 건 우리밖에 안 남았으니...

사실 이 책을 사려던 아니었다. 하지만 탐정이 등장한다고 하고 앤드류 벅스 작품이 번역된 것이 이것밖에 없어 호기심에 샀다...

진짜 사려던 책은 이 책이다. 에드 맥베인의 매튜 호프 시리즈를 좋아하는 것은 아니지만 출판된 책들 중 이 책만 가지고 있지 않아 샀다. 이건 병이다. 그래도 벼르고 별러 구했으니 다행이다 싶다...
