사소한 것에 목매는 경우가 너무 많다. 결국 지나고 보니 그런 순간들이 감정 싸움으로 번지고 피로감을 호소하게 만들었던 것 같다. 디킨슨이 표현하길 그 크기를 따지다가 죽어간다고 말한다.
195 시인으로서의 자부심
이 책에서 자신이 시를 쓰는 것에 대해서의 소회나 감상 등을 표현한 여러 편의 시가 실려 있다. 나는 이 시가 특히 좋았는데 생전에는 제대로 된 평가를 받지는 못했으나 시를 쓸 때만큼은 진심을 다해서 썼음이 분명하고 또 천직으로 생각했다는 것 때문이다.
255 죽음과 망각
죽음이라는 소재는 디킨슨의 시에서 유독 많이 보인다. 이 시가 좀 더 특별했던 것은 죽음이 오는 상황과 죽음 후의 주변 인물들이 망자를 찾아오는 풍경, 산자와 망자의 이승에서의 헤어짐을 표현하기 때문이다. 망자와의 헤어짐 뒤에 며칠이 지나면 산자는 일상을 다시 살아나간다는 것도 공감이 되었다. 결국 산자는 살 것이고 죽은자는 바닥에 누워 있을 것이다. 다만 죽은 자는 산자의 기억에 살 뿐인 것이다.
