아무도 테레즈를 손가락질 할 수 없으리라.

왠일로 에밀 졸라의 작품을 읽느냐 싶겠지만 살인이 등장하기에 읽게 되었다. 도대체 에밀 졸라같은 작가들은 살인에 대해 어떻게 표현하는 가가 궁금했다. 작가는 인간의 광기와 공포를 살인이라는 방법과 살인과 간통을 저지르는 인간이 아닌 짐승 같은 남녀를 통해 해부하고 싶었다고 말하고 있다. 그런데 내 눈에 테레즈와 로랑은 짐승 같아 보이지 않았다. 그들이 짐승 같아 보이고 그렇게 표현하고 싶었다면 그것은 작가가 인간에 대해 환상을 품고 있었기 때문이라고 말하고 싶다. 원래 인간은 이런 존재다.  

그렇다면 테레즈와 로랑만이 해부의 대상인 짐승 같은 인간인가. 아니다. 이 작품에 등장하는 모든 사람들은 또 다른 테레즈와 로랑일 뿐이다. 자신의 병약한 아들만을 위해 어린 여자아이를 제대로 키우지 못한 래캥 부인의 모습은 짐승 같지 않은가. 그 아이의 생각은 아랑곳하지 않고 자신의 아들과 안락한 노후를 위해 병약한 아들과 결혼시킨 행위는 어떠한가. 테레즈의 사촌이자 남편이고 살해당하는 카미유는 어떠한가. 그는 자신만 아는 이기적인 남자, 아니 아이다. 그들이 테레즈를 전혀 배려하지 않는데 사회적 관습에 반하는 행동을 한다고 해서 그것이 짐승 같은 행위일까. 그들이 진짜 짐승 같은 모습을 보일 때는 자신의 죄를 병든 시어머니 래캥 부인에게 고해하는 과정에서 나타난다. 래캥 부인은 아무 것도 몰랐지만 테레즈와 아들의 친구인 로랑을 결혼시켰다. 자신의 안락한 노후를 위해서였지 테레즈나 로랑을 위해서는 아니었다.   

인간이란 어떤 존재인가. 궁금하다면 이 책의 테레즈와 로랑, 그리고 라캥 부인, 카미유를 해부해 보시길. 이들은 모두 똑같은 인간이다. 단지 살인을 했다고 로랑이 더 추악한 인간이고 살해를 당했다고 카미유가 도덕적 인간은 아니다. 누가 누구에게 돌을 던질 것인가. 내겐 테레즈가 로랑이고, 카미유고 라캥 부인이다. 그들은 같다. 인간이 결코 다르지 않듯이, 그리고 절대 변하지 않듯이. 이 작품은 살인에 대한 성찰이 아닌 인간에 대한 성찰을 하는 작품이다. 인간은 사악한 존재라고 에밀 졸라는 자신도 모르게 말하고 있다. 그는 테레즈와 로랑이 동물, 짐승이었다고 말하고 있지만 여기 짐승 아닌 자가 어디 있는가. 인간이란 바로 이런 존재인 것이다. 

오히려 불쌍한 것은 테레즈다. 테레즈에게는 그 어떤 선택의 여지가 한번도 없었다. 단 한번 선택할 기회가 주어졌을 때 그녀는 불운한 선택을 했을 뿐이다. 이 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 저마다 자신의 욕망을 위해 테레즈를 이용한다. 라캥 부인도 그렇고 살해당하는 테레즈의 남편도 그렇고 그를 살해하는 테레즈의 정부도 그렇고. 오직 테레즈만이 희생을 강요당하다 단 한번 자신의 욕망에 충실했던 것이다. 그것이 비극이라면 어떤 사람은 평생 이용만 당하라는 운명으로 태어났으니 그대로 따라야 한다고 말해야 할 것이다. 하지만 그것은 너무 가혹한 것이다. 왜 아무도 테레즈에게 물어 보지 않는가. 그 시대의 여성이 어떤 삶을 살았는가를 테레즈를 통해 본다. 그래서 테레즈처럼 살 수 없었던 버지니아 울프는 자살을 선택할 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 그녀가 원한 것은 작은 방, 자신 소유의 작은 방 한 칸뿐이었는데. 오늘을 사는 우리는 아무도 테레즈를 손가락질 할 수 없으리라.

이 작품을 보고 있으니 자연주의 문학이라는 것의 창시자인 에밀 졸라라는 작가가 진짜 인간에 대해 알았던가 하는 생각마저 든다. 물론 난 에밀 졸라를 모른다. 또한 19세기라는 배경도 무시할 수는 없을 것이다. 아마 이 작품이 등장한 시기에 읽었다면 어땠을지 모르겠지만 에밀 졸라가 테레즈와 로랑만을 염두에 둔 것이 아니기를 바란다. 그렇다면 이 작품을 좀 더 이해하기 쉽기 때문이다. 문학에 대해 잘 모르는 내가 이런 얘기를 한다는 것 자체가 우습겠지만 내 느낌은 이렇다. 그냥 '나도 에밀 졸라의 작품을 읽었다.'라는 생각을 가질 수 있다는 것에 만족하기로 했다.
