뉴욕 타임즈 100권 리스트야 저리 가그라!



Derek Attridge (James Joyce의 전문가), Cedric Watts (Joseph Conrad와 Graham Greene의 권위자), Laura Marcus (Virginia Woolf), and David Mariott (시인이자 미국 흑인 문학의 권위자) 등등 20명의 국제적인 비평가들이 뽑은 죽기전에 읽어야할 1001권 리스트가 책으로 나왔다. 이 리스트의 특징이라면 단지 클랙식이나 순수문학작품 뿐 아니라 로맨스, SF, 스릴러 등 다양한 장르를 폭넓게 아우르고 있으며 200년 이후 출간된 최신작들에도 많은 비중을 두었다는 점이다.

영국 미국에서 동시에 3월에 출간 되었지만 주 저자가 영국 사람인 탓인지 영국 부커상 수상작들이 많이 포함되어 있는게 또 하나의 특색이랄까.

이번주에 읽고있는 책도 두권이나 끼어있으니 흐뭇하다. 웬지 1001권이 얼마 안 남은 듯 싶기도 하고...

하나는 뭐였는지 밝힐 수 없고 (너무 야했슴 ^^)

하나는 이 리스트에서 일등인, 아니 그냥 맨 위에 있는 Never let me go이다. 일본계인 작가지만 너무나도 영국적인 글을 쓰는 Ishiguro를 나는 평소에 그의 엄청나게 긴 문장과 남발하는 쉼표로 한문장 읽다 숨이 모자라 쓰러지거나 문장의 처음이 기억 안 날까봐  피했었건만. (같이 보고 있던 존 버거의 너무 짧아서 허전하다 싶은 문장과 비교를 하면 더 심해진다) 이번책도 사실은 더 읽을까 말까 하던 중이었는데... 흠 끝을 봐야만 하겄다.

요즘의 느릿느릿함으로는 언제 다 읽으리? 우선 2000년 이후 책들 만이라도 올해 안에?

토요일 집에 와서 책을 분류별로 다 빼놓고, 나갔다가 저녁 늦게 들어와서 오늘 아침 늦게 일어나 열심히 청소를 했는데도 역시나...

방에 들어서자 마자 왼쪽의 서재. 이쪽은 원서 쪽인데, 맨 위 세 칸은 안쪽라인에 아가사크리스티 원서 전작 콜렉션이 발표된 순서대로 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로 꽂혀 있습니다.

이 사진 왼편에 얼핏 급조된 책장이 하나 보이는데, 저건 이방에 한줄을 더 놓으려니 문이 안열려 대강 영어책과 전공책을 마구 넣어둔 것이랍니다. 사실 그 왼쪽에 잡지 코너가 하나 더있는데 정신없어 절대 보여드릴 수 없군요. 아래부분도 추리원서입니다.

책장 맨위는 세로읽기 세계명작전집.



이렇게요. 미국과 영국에서 발표된 제목을 참조로 사들였는데, 간혹 가닥 출판사의 농간 (?)으로 겹치는 단편선이 조금 있습니다. 어쩔까...생각중입니다.

전 일룸 가구를 좋아해서 모든 정리가구들은 다 그걸 쓰고 있는데, 원서의 경우 한칸에 정말 많이 들어갑니다. 한칸에 저렇게 4줄이 들어갑니다.


이건 방에 들어가다가 전면에 책상과 책장이 또 있습니다. 책상 이하 라인도 정리했지만, 바닥에 지금 책이 쌓여있어 위쪽 샷만 찍었답니다. 아직 책상위에도.... 저 시커먼 것은 호주에서 사온 오리너구리 인형입니다.

 

오리 너구리 뒤에 것은 홍콩에서 사온 잭팟 게임기겸 저금통입니다.

오른쪽 창문과 컴퓨터, 그리고 그 옆에 PC 게임 CD장이 자그마한게 하나 있는데 먼지투성이입니다.

이쪽은 추리책과 전공책, 기타 등등이 있습니다.



중간에 옛날 추리물이 보이는데, 간혹 제목이 달라 그냥 샀다가 겹치기도 합니다.



PC와 DMB 정말 바라만 봐도 뿌듯합니다.



책상위가 저러니 바닥은 어떨지 짐작이 가시죠?

 

이건 아파트 현관 옆에 파티션겸 책꽂이 입니다. 이것도 일룸에서 나온건데 파티션 용이라 일반 책꽂이의 뒷면이 아무 신경을 안쓴것과 달리 예쁘게 처리되어 있습니다.




소파옆에는 요리책이나 기타 실용도서, 역사책 - 사놓고도 많이 안읽었습니다 - 들이 있습니다. 전 전쟁 속의 전략같은데 관심이 좀 많아서 그런 쪽이 조금 있습니다. 저기 보이시나요, 민법책? 친구의 영향도 있었고 한번 읽어보고 싶었습니다. 재미있던데요. 한문이 많은거 빼고.

전 청소를 별로 안좋아해서 주변에 많이 늘어놔요. 그리고 청소도 하기 쉬운 가구가 좋더라구요. 그래서 가격이 비싸지만 패브릭보다는 가죽이 좋더라구요.

이 소파의 전면쯤에 침실과 욕실이 있고 그 사이에 저 CD장을 놓았습니다. 예전에는 정말 열심히 모았는데... 침대옆에 오디오들 두었고 그 옆에 요즘에 가장 많이 듣는 CD앨범들이 놓여있습니다.

이 사진은 저번에 찍은건데 이걸 보고 흰 문에 제 손때를 가서 지웠다는 거 아닙니까. 그럼에도 불구하고 귀찮아서 옛날 사진만 올린걸 보면 제 귀차니즘이 어느 정돈지 아시죠.

 

다음은 저의 보물들입니다. 원래 침대를 바꾸기 전에는 침대머리에 책장이 있는 시스템이라서 거기에 아가사크리스티원서를 모아두었고, 그게 제 보물 1호였습니다 (물론 지금두).

이건 런던 셜록홈즈박물관 건너편 서점에서 사온 건데, 원래 Strand Magazine에 연재되던 판형으로 만들어진 것입니다. 일러스트레이션도요.





 

이건 관시리즈가 나오기전에 비싼값에 사들인 관시리즈. 투덜대기도 했지만, 관시리즈가 다 출간이 되어도 이 책들은 소중하게 보관할거예요.



한때 스누피에 빠졌을때 사들인것들. 스누피 음반도 모았지요.



이것들은 코믹북 중고책 서점에 들려서 사가지고 온 것들. 심슨가족들은 나라마다 라이센스가 주어져서 그 나라에 맞게끔 스토리가 만들어진답니다. 이것들은 전형적인, 잡지책 두께의 얇은 코믹북이고, 아마존에서 사들인 코믹북은 책과 같습니다. 두꺼워요.

이건 셰익스피어의 작품을 만화작품으로 만든것인데, 작품마다 그림체가 다르고 대사가 원작에 충실해 두꺼워요. 그림도 예술입니다. 아가사크리스티를 다 모았으니 이것들도 계속 모을거예요.

제가 사랑해 마지 않는 디킨즈의 빅토리아시대 관련 인테리어잡지나 건축잡지도 간혹 샀는데, 어디로 사라졌는지....집안에는 있으니까 찾아내야죠.



이건 디킨즈 하드커버 보급판 작품인데, 귀엽고 뽀대나요. 흐흐흐. 몇개 있는데 다 모으고 싶지만......

내년에 영국에 갈 수 있다면 함!

  제가 매혹되어 있는 나이트 시리즈.

작은 도자기 집모형 (아, 그건 딴데 있어요. 먼지 묻을까봐 베니스 가면, 가구모형과 함께 다른 곳에 넣어두었지요)과 함께 제가 열광하는 아이템입니다.

 

예전에는 오르골을 모았는데, 줘버리고 그래서 별거 안남았어요. 아, 그리고 너무 비싸서....ㅜ.ㅜ

제가 모형을 좋아하는 걸 아시고 가끔 선물해주시는 분들이 있어요. 이건 자전거인데 완벽해요. 체인도 있어서 탈 수도 있고 브레이크도 있어요. 재봉틀하고 작은 차세트도 있는데, 그것두.



아참, 이건 오빠건데 옛날에 이런거 많이 모았잖아요.

까만 책들도 있었는데 그건 어디로 갔는지 모르겠어요. 아직 집에 남아있는 게 있을지도....

 

Kel은 한번 빠지면 왠만해서는 빠져나오기가 힘들어 가산을 탕진하지요. 이제는 예전보다는 조금 조절이 되긴하지만...

아프가니스탄에 사는 열두살 소녀 굴소마의 등은 온통 흉터투성 이다.

아프간에 아직도 남아있는 조혼(早婚) 풍습으로 네살에 결혼한 뒤 지난 7년간 갖은 구타와 폭행으로 점철된 시집살이 때문이다. 동심을 빼앗겨버린 굴소마의 기구한 사연이 미 CNN 특파원 출신 종군기자 케빈 사이츠의 블로그를 통해 폭로돼 국제적인 파장을 일으키고 있다.

굴소마의 삶은 세살때 아버지가 돌아가시면서부터 불행으로 치달았다. 1년뒤 재혼한 어머니가 새남편이 딸의 양육을 거부하자 이웃집에 굴소마를 시집보낸 것. 신랑은 이웃집의 서른살짜리 장남이었다. 그러나 굴소마의 삶은 ‘새댁’보다는 ‘가사 노예’라 는 단어에 더욱 걸맞았다. 빨래부터 12명의 시동생·시누이를 돌보는 일까지 거의 모든 가사노동이 네살에 불과했던 그의 몫이었기 때문이었다. 굴소마는 사이츠와의 인터뷰에서 “시아버지가 손님을 맞을 때가 유일하게 토막잠을 잘 수 있는 시간이었다”면서 “밤에도 담요 한장 없이 집밖의 카펫 조각 위에서 자야 했다”고 울먹였다.

그러나 굴소마를 더욱 불행하게 만든 것은 바로 시아버지의 끊임없는 폭력. 시아버지는 몽둥이로 상습 폭행했고, 12명 자녀들에 게도 “뼈를 부러뜨려라”며 폭행에 동참하게 했다. 보다못한 이웃이 굴소마에게 음식을 갖다준 사실이 발각된 뒤에는 창고에 2 개월간 가두고는 하루에 한번 빵 한조각을 던져줬을 뿐이었다. 어떤 때에는 바닥에 엎드려 눕힌 뒤 그의 맨등을 도마로 활용하기 도 했다.

그리던 지난해 어느날 시누이가 손목시계를 잃어버리자 시아버지는 굴소마의 팔을 뒤로 묶은 채 ‘시계를 찾지 못하면 죽여버리 겠다’며 뜨거운 물을 끼얹고 막무가내로 구타했다. 오른쪽 팔과 발은 이미 부러진 상태였다. 굴소마는 “도망치지 않으면 죽을 것 같다는 생각이 퍼뜩 들었다”며 당시를 회상했다. 도망친 뒤 인력거꾼 도움으로 경찰에 인도된 그가 상처로부터 회복되는데 한달이 걸렸다.

현재 수도 카불의 고아원에서 지내고 있는 굴소마는 시아버지가 폭행죄로 구속됐지만 여전히 “밤만 되면 다시 그때로 돌아갈까 봐 두렵다”며 불안해하고 있다고 케빈 사이츠는 전했다. 그는 자신 같은 희생자가 나오지 않도록 앞으로 인권부문을 공부하겠 다는 희망으로 살아가고 있다. 케빈 사이츠는 기사에서 “열두살 소녀라고 믿어지지 않을 만큼 또래에 비해 훨씬 나이 들어보이는 모습에 놀랐다”면서 “희망을 버리지 않는 굴소마의 강한 용기 에 찬사를 보낸다”고 덧붙였다. 이 기사에는 현재 전세계 또래 어린이들의 격려를 포함, 7900여건의 댓글이 붙을 정도로 큰 반 향을 일으키고 있다.
