생의 밑바닥까지 다 내려간 한 백인의 삶의 반전 영화. 지금은 유명해진, 그의 랩 가사가 너무나 노골적이고 적나라하고 직설적이라는 비판을 받고 있지만, 또 대놓고 언론에 나 누구랑 잤다 라고 이야기하고 다니고, 지네 엄마를 랩으로 까고 하지만, 또 그래서 그를 보는 시각이 편견에 사로잡혀있던 것이 사실이었지만, 2003년의 겨울 이 영화를 극장에서 보고 그랬다. 에미넴에게 푹 빠져버린 나머지 자리에서 일어나지 않았다. 마지막 엔딩 곡 Lose yourself 가 다 끝날 때까지. 그리고 극장을 나오며 그의 음반을 다 샀다. 1,2,3집 모두. 집에 오며 또 거리를 돌아다니며, 씨디플레이어엔 에미넴이 꽂혀있었고, 한동안 그에게서 벗어나지 못했다.

그의 희망은 분노에서 시작한다. 친구가 마련해준 무대 위 랩 맞짱대결에서 한 마디 말도 못하고 마이크를 놓아버린 그는 쪼다, 지 친구랑 동거하는 엄마에게 뭐라했다 욕먹고 쫓겨나고, 여자친구랑 헤어지며 임신했다길래 잘 곳조차 없는 몸에 유일한 차 한대 그녀에게 줘버리고, 나중에 알고보니 임신은 거짓말, 이미 차는 날아갔고, 새로만난 여자는 지 친구랑 붙어먹고, 나는 또 그걸 봤네, 한대 쥐어패줬네, 그러나 그날 밤 패거리에서 물씬 두들겨맞았네, 눈탱이 밤탱이 됐네, 어린 꼬마 여동생은 창문에서 보며 울었네, 내 인생이 왜 이래 한탄했네, 곁에 있는 친구라고는 버버덕대는 바보, 모두가 직업없는 한심한 인생, 인생이 그렇지 뭐, 뭣같지, 쌓일 대도 쌓인 분노는 무대에서 한 방에. 너희들 날 엿먹였겠다, 좋아 어디 한번 해봐, 나 이대로 안 죽어, 45초 랩으로 한번, 또 한번, 1분 30초 랩으로 막판 KO. 이게 바로 나야. 나야. 나 B 래빗 B 래빗.

완전 양아치같은 이미지로 인식되던 랩퍼 에미넴이 이 영화를 통해 진실되게 보였다. 직업 연기를 하며 자신이 살아온 인생사를 보여주고, 암울했던 시기에서 벗어나는 재도약의 모습을 보여준다. 아 이렇게 힘든 세월을 보내 지금의 자리에 올랐구나. 너 양아치인건 그래도 사실이지만, 그래 너 많이 힘들었겠다 싶다. 분노는 그의 희망이다. 아무렇지 않은 상태로는 무대에 오를 수 없다. 나를 자극해달라. 나를 분노케해달라. 어디 한번 엿먹여주마. 작은 체구에 하얀 피부 자니 스미스. 나 무시하지마. 너 큰코 다쳐. 이 영화를 보며 시원함의 쾌락을 느낄 수 있는 것은, 이런 녀석이, 이렇게 당하기만 하던 녀석이, 모두가 보는 앞에서 일어섰기 때문이다. 쪼다에서 왕중왕이 됐기 때문이다. 이게 바로 나야. 이게 바로 나야. 내 인생이 형편없어 보일 때 <8마일>을 보자구. 에미넴이 복수해줄 거라고. 나 무시하지마. 근데 누구에게 갈굼당한 것도, 별다른 금전적 문제도 없고, 그다지 삶이 뭣같지도 않은 지금 나는 왜 이 영화를 보며 이런 쾌락의 대리만족을 느껴야하는거지. 원인도 모르고, 이유도 모르고, 대상도 알 수 없지만 그래 시원했으면 그만 아니야? 오늘밤엔 리사오노와 안드레아 보첼리를 내려놓고, 에미넴을 들어야겠다. 자 play.
