도이치는 예측과 예언을 다음과 같이 구별한다.
예측(prediction): '좋은 설명'으로부터 나오는 미래의 사건에 관한 결론("conclusions about future events that follow from good explanations")
예언(prophecy): 아직 알 수 없는 것을 알려고 하는 것("anything that purports to know what is not yet knowable")
그러면서 알 수 없는 것을 알려고 하는 것은 오류와 자기기만을 낳는다고 말한다. 그리고 무엇보다도 비관주의가 자란다고 말한다. 그가 드는 물리학계에서의 예시이다.
