기억과 세월과 나이듦과 책임과 회한에 대한 이야기. 한 번만 주어진 인생은 어떻게 뒤돌아보더라도 후회가 남는다. 기억과 추억은 뒤늦은 합리화일 뿐. 뒤로 갈수록 코믹해지다가--그래서 재밌다가--갑자기 뒤통수를 친다. 결말이 꼭 이럴 필요가 있을까. 내가 제대로 이해하고 있나 확인해보고 싶어서 결말을 두 번 읽었다.
When you are in your twenties, even if you're confused and uncertain about your aims and purposes, you have a strong sense of what life itself is, and of what you in life are, and might become. Later... later there is more uncertainty, more overlapping, more backtracking, more false memories. Back then, you can remember your short life in its entirety. Later, the memory becomes a thing of shreds and patches. It's a bit like the black box aeroplanes carry to record what happens in a crash. If nothing goes wrong, the tape erases itself. So if you do crash, it's obvious why you did; if you don't, then the log of your journey is much less clear. (pp. 114-115)
