암표상에게 입장권을 구매한 사람들은 성당의 이러한 주장에 반대할수도 있다. 어쨌거나 그들은 돈을 내고 성사에 참석할 수 있었다. 하지만 나는 교회 대변인이 지적하려 했던 핵심을 달리 해석했다. 암표상에게 입장권을 사서 교황 집전 미사에 참석할 수는 있겠지만, 미사에 참석하는 경험 자체가 매매 대상이 된다면 성사의 정신이 훼손된다고 강조한 것이다. 종교의식이나 자연의 경이로움을 사고팔 수 있는 재화로다루는 것은 그것을 향해 경의를 표현하는 태도가 아니다. 신성한 재화를 이윤 추구의 수단으로 바꾸는 행위는 그 가치를 잘못된 방식으로 평가하는 것이다.

러한 관점에 따르면 국립공원은 단지 사용의 대상이나 사회적 효용의 근원 정도에 머물지 않는다. 국립공원은 자연의 경이로움과 아름다움이 깃든 장소이고 그 진가를 감상하고 심지어는 경외심까지 품어야 하는 대상이다. 그러므로 이러한 장소에 입장하는 권리를 경매에 부치는 암표상들의 행위는 일종의 신성모독이다.

차선의 정리‘에 따르면, 만약 어떤 이유에서든 반독점 정책과 환경 정책을 동시에 실행하는 것(‘동시에 끝까지 밀어붙이는 정책‘)이 불가능하다고 해서 둘 중 하나만 실행한다면 상황이 개선될지 확신할 수없고, 심지어 상황이 악화될 수도 있다.
이런 결과를 직관적으로 이해해보자. 효율성 조건 중 한 가지가위배됨으로써 발생한 왜곡이 또 다른 조건이 위배됨으로써 발생하는 왜곡을 상쇄하면서 작아질 수 있다는 이야기다. 여기서 놀라운 점은 경제를 표준적인 효율성 조건에 가깝게 만드는 것이 때때로 효율성 손실을 가져올 수 있다는 점이다.
