Double Tourbillon 30°

▶ greubel forsey history

Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have been working together for over 15 years in a relationship founded on a shared vision of horological creativity and a quest for perfection.

Robert and Stephen began working on their own vision, new generation tourbillon in 1999.  Over four years later, they unveiled their brand 'Greubel Forsey' and stunned horological aficionados with their innovative Double Tourbillon 30°. A timepiece clearly demonstrating the two watchmakers’ quest for innovation and perfection.

With over 40 years of combined experience, Robert and Stephen continue building on their deep traditional knowledge by inventing technically valid horological complications to rigorous aesthetic principles.

▶ Quadruple Tourbillon A differential

The spherical differential connecting the four rotating carriages of the Quadruple Tourbillon is a prime example of Greubel Forsey's inventive approach as it exhibits an unprecedented degree of complexity, refinement and timekeeping performance.

The four asynchronous tourbillons independently contribute to its extremely high accuracy.

The spherical differential acts like a car's differential in distributing torque between two wheels while allowing them to rotate at different speeds.

The two double-tourbillions are in an asymmetrical format to provide clear visibility to all carriages on the dial side, as well as providing an additional lateral view.

▶ Tourbillon 24 Secondes Incliné

The Tourbillon 24 Secondes Incliné (T24Si) is Greubel Forsey's third fundamental invention and continues the exploration into minimising the effects of gravity on the regulating organ.  This is achieved in the T24Si by means of an innovative tourbillon cage undergoing rapidly changing positions with a high angular velocity.

Mastering the high velocity of the T24Si's single carriage required breakthroughs in both materials and design. The laboratory determined that Avional and titanium offered the ideal mechanical properties necessary in minimising the higher energy consumption and stresses of the faster rotating tourbillon: Avional for the pillars of the tourbillon cage and titanium for the carriage bridges. The 88 parts of the T24Si system weighs a mere 0.39 grams.

The development of a complex inclined gearing for the satellite pinion, combined with an ultra-light tourbillon cage, has delivered a system perfectly suited to the powerful stresses imposed by the high velocity. Testing shows that the T24Si's  approach significantly improves the performance of the single-axis tourbillon.

▶ Double Tourbillon 30°

In order to respond to the specific requirements of the tourbillon in a wristwatch, Greubel Forsey developed an innovative double tourbillon mechanism, with one tourbillon rotating in 60 seconds and inclined at 30° rotating inside another rotating every four minutes. Rotating a tourbillon inside another tourbillon in this manner averages out errors induced by the force of gravity on the balance.

When introduced, the architectural design of the Double Tourbillon 30° Vision focused on the visibility of the elegantly complex invention. For connoisseurs of sophisticated haute horlogerie with a preference for discretion, the Double Tourbillon 30° Secret is offered with a closed dial; a dial nevertheless hinting at the splendid treasure beneath.

Invention Piece 1 pays homage to the timepiece that launched Greubel Forsey: the Double Tourbillion 30°. While the Double Tourbillon 30° system lies at the heart of the  movement, the displays, surfaces, architecture and aesthetics have all been profoundly developed in creating this exceptional timepiece.
