9/27 The Hour

What's movies, novels and dramas all about? Story? Are you an idiot? Character! from which everything is flown.

Then what's character all about? Providing history and uniqueness. When you know some history of her/him you know her/him. When you know her/him you are forced to have sympathy for her/him. If you provide a character with history and uniqueness however the character is cruel or nasty s/he can get readers' sympathy, meaning the readers are being under your thumb. It's the secret of great writers and the holy grail of dull ones.

Above clip is from "The Hour", a British-born TV drama, which is impossibly sleepy and extremely naive as usual. For example something like "Have you had a single original thought in your life?"(00:58~) line. But I like it!

9/22 The Apprentice

The English are the stupidest people on the earth and the worst thing they have ever done is to invent reality TV shows, one of which I am absorbed in these days. The Apprentice is my English tutors' recommendation when I asked him what is the appropriate TV programme to improve my speaking and listening skills. After watching the first episode I talked to myself "Ok, it's my programme. I understand it more easily than other TV shows." Since then I watch it at least one episode a day. Thankfully full time episodes are on the Youtube. Someday I hope I can understand every word from this show.

9/20 Summer is over. Defenitely.

Summer is over. Completely it has gone without any trace of its existing. I think it's all right. I love autumn, too. When the night comes earlier it's time for philosophers. (Who said it before?)

Walking along the sidewalk, where there were plenty of fallen leaves spreading out I was wondering whether there was still the sun making the strong contrasts between colour tones in Aix en Provence, the hometown of the artist.

Here again. It's time for philosophers, students and street cleaners.

And I'm working very hard.

9/19 My English isn't getting better.

It has already been one month since I came here in the UK. But my English isn't getting better as I expect.

Today I got an interview with my class tutor.
Me: I'm not improved a lot.
Him: It takes time. (Of course you have to say like that...)
And
Him: You don't seem to be involved much in the conversations in the class.
Me: I don't understand what others say exactly, so I can't respond.
Him: You're better than at first.

Anyway the weather isn't so bad these days, which is my consolation...

9/17 슬랫지 해머

토요일. 아직 입과 귀가 자유롭지 못하기 때문에 주중엔 굉장히 피곤하다. 금요일 밤에 반 아이들과 펍(한국으로 치면 맥주집?)에 가서 맥주를 마셨다. 무엇보다도 귀에 익은 곡들이 많이 나와서 좋았다.

필이 박혀서 오늘 유튜브에서 좀 놀았다. 오늘 들었던 곡 중 하나를 올려 놓는다. 무슨 노래를 하려고 저렇게 폼을 잡는지 뻔히 알면서도 느닷없다는 듯 터져나오는 강렬함에 매번 놀라게 된다. 가사도 공연 모습도 굉장히 외설적이지만 곡 자체엔 끈적임이 전혀 없다. 경쾌하고 시원할 뿐. 말하자면 가장 건강한 버전의, 그러므로 가장 이상적인 버전의 포르노라고 할 수 있을 것 같다.

피터 가브리엘은 내가 가장 좋아하는 뮤지션 중 하나다. 그가 몸담았던 제너시스도 내가 가장 좋아하는 밴드 중 하나다. 생각해 보면, 제너시스/피터 가브리엘, 비틀즈/존 레넌, 사이먼앤가펑클/폴 사이먼...의 쌍들 중 하나를 선택하라면(윽, 유치하다) 난 쉽게 선택을 하지 못할 것 같다. 후자의 경우도 밴드로 재적할 때만큼이나 훌륭한 음악들을 계속 생산해 내었기 때문이다.

제너시스 시절의 피터 가브리엘에게는 영국의 시골스러운 느낌이 나는데 솔로 시절의 그에게는 그런 지방색이 사라진다. 마치 죠슈아 트리 앨범 이후로 U2에게서 아일랜드 분위기가 거의 사라진 것처럼 말이다. 그렇더라도 우리는 그 음악의 첫소절만 듣고도 이건 피터 가브리엘의 음악이구나, 이건 U2의 음악이구나 하는 걸 바로 알 수 있다. 그들의 독특한 개성은 그러한 변용을 통해서도 유지되고 있기 때문이다. 그래서 가장 중요한 건 자기만의 독특한 개성을 찾아내는 것이 아닐까 하는 생각을 하게 된다. 그만큼 힘든 일이기도 할 것이다. 그러므로 자신만의 개성을 확립해 내었다는 것만으로도 우리는 박수를 보내고 축하를 보내 주어야 할 것 같다. 그리고 그 틀잡음은 나중에 이루어지는 것이 아닌 것 같다. 마치 20대에 꽃피지 않은 수학적 능력은 수학적 능력이 아닌 것처럼. 바로 말하면 천재는 일찍 온다는 것. 아직 오지 않았다면 이미 어쩔 수 없는 것. 운명은 우주의 법칙 이상으로 강철과 같으리라...
