4월의 봄길을 마냥 걷다 보도에 떨어진 꽃잎을 무심코 밟아버렸다. 황급히 발끝을 들어보니 서글픈 꽃잎하나가 나의 무심함에 무참히 짓밟혀 있었다. 괜스레 미안한 맘에 꽃잎을 살짝 들어 보았다. 가벼움... 너무나도 여려서 슬픈 생명하나가 그렇게 죽어있더라.

꽃은 울며 지지도, 왁자지껄 웃으며 지지도 않는다.

그저 말없이 그냥 질뿐이다. 고요하게 침묵 속에서 자신의 생명이 끝나가는 것을 소리 없이 알린다. 4월이 잔인한 까닭은 바로 꽃의 죽음 때문일지도 모른다는 생각이 문득 뇌리를 스쳤다. 나도 꽃처럼 질 순 없을까?

April in Paris

4월이 되면 항상 듣게 되는 곡이다. 좋든 싫든, 자의든 타의든 간에 말이다. 겨울이 되면 늘상 시벨리우스를 듣게 되는 것처럼...

이 곡은 러시아 태생이었던 베논 듀크가 파리에서 생애 처음으로 “온화하고 따뜻한” 4월을 겪어보고 비로소 봄의 진정한 아름다움을 느껴, 작곡한 작품으로 1931년 뮤지컬 ‘Walk a Little Faster'에서 처음 소개 되었다. 이 곡의 명반으로는 부드럽고 달콤한 Swing의 진가를 느끼게 해주는 Count Basie를 빼놓을 순 없겠지만, T. S. Eliot의 잔인한 4월을 제대로 만끽하고 싶다면 Thelonious Monk의 를 적극 추천한다.

Monk의 April of Paris를 듣고 있노라면, 난 늘 세잔의 “Mont Sainte-Victoire” 를 떠올리는데 몽크의 음악과 세잔의 그림은 묘하게 닮은 구석이 있다.

몽크의 특징이라고 한다면, 그의 음악에 뚜렷한 윤곽선을 안겨주는 스타카토(staccato) 주법과 투박하면서도 강렬한 터치, 갑작스런 휴지부(休止符)에 이은 자유롭고 절제된 코드진행 등을 들 수 있는데, 그것은 그가 음악에 인위적인 옷을 입히기를 싫어했던 그의 음악적 철학에서 비롯된 것이다. 그는 Piano에 감성적 색채를 부여하는 음색(音色)의 조탁을 포기하는 대신, 강렬하고 투박한 터치와 뚝뚝 끊어치는듯 한 스타카토로 음과 음 사이의 짧은 정적을 둠으로써, 깊이감과 전혀 강요되지 않는 자연스런 조화를 창조해 내었다.

세잔이 전통적인 원근법을 포기하는 대가로, 색채를 통한 새로운 원근법을 창조해 낸 것처럼(색깔은 인간에게 여러 가지 감성을 느끼게 해주는데, 어떤 색은 뒤로 물러나 보이고, 어떤 색은 앞으로 나와 보이는 느낌을 주게 된다. 세잔은 색을 통해 부피, 흐름, 확장과 수축 같은 여러 가지 감각을 자신의 그림에 부여했다.) 몽크는 음색을 통한 음악에의 감성적 접근을 차단하는 대신, 실수로 옆 건반을 잘못 눌러 버린듯한 불협화음과 음과 음사이의 짧은 정적, 그리고 갑작스런 휴지기를 통한 긴 침묵 등으로 음악에 새로운 플롯(Plot)을 부여해 준 것이다.

Monk의 April in Paris는 Duke Jordan이나 Eddie Higgins의 Piano에서 느껴지는 서정적이고 감미로운 영롱한 음색따윈 찾아볼 수 없다. 오히려 수많은 불협화음으로 인해 감상하기엔 다소 불편할 뿐 아니라 신경에 거슬리기 까지 할 터이다.

하지만 그의 이런 음악엔 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없는 진정성(眞情性)이 있다.

우리 모두가 타인에게는 설명할 수 없는 자신만의 ‘마음 속 가시’를 품고 살아가듯이, 그의 불협화음에는 그런 가시가 있다. 그의 파리의 4월은 단지 아름다울 뿐만 아니라 때로는 우울하기도 하며, 때로는 슬프고, 때로는 처절하기 까지 하다. 그것이 Monk의 4월이며, 엘리엇의 4월이기도 하고, 나의 4월이기도 하다.

<인도로 가는 길>과 더불어 포스터의 최고작으로 꼽히는 <하워즈 엔드>(Howards End, 1910)는 계급의 전쟁을 그린 소설이다. 전원 저택 하워즈 엔드가 상징하는 ‘영국’을 누가 상속할 것인가를 놓고, 식민지에서 부를 축적한 산업자본가 윌콕스가와 진보적 중류층 슐레겔 자매, 중산층의 문화를 동경하는 도시 근로자 레너드 바스트가 보이지 않는 투쟁을 벌인다. 결국 하워즈 엔드는 물질과 문화, 전원과 도시를 ‘연결’하려고 애쓴 마가렛의 손을 거쳐 헬렌과 레너드의 사생아에게 상속된다. <하워즈 엔드>로 자리를 굳힌 포스터는 1912년 인도를 처음 방문하고 마수드와 재회했다. 1913년 포스터는 시인이자 동성애인권운동가인 에드워드 카펜터를 방문하며 얻은 영감으로 <모리스>(Maurice)에 착수했다. 케임브리지 시절 휴 메러디스와의 연애가 녹아 있는 이 소설을 포스터는 “내가 죽거나, 영국이 죽기 전에는” 출판할 수 없다고 말했다. 연구서 <E. M. 포스터>의 저자 로버트 K. 마틴은 <모리스>가 동성애 권리를 탄원하는 소설이 아니라 동성애 의식의 발전을 그린 소설이라고 지적한다. 여성혐오가 깔린 고대 그리스적 동성애에서 섹스를 포함한 온전한 동성애로, 다시 동성애의 사회·정치적 결과를 성찰하는 사랑으로 모리스의 의식은 확장된다. 작가는 이렇게 정리한다. “그들은 연고도 돈도 없이 계급의 울타리 밖에서 살아야 했다. 그들은 죽을 때까지 노동하고 서로에게 충실해야 했다.” 포스터는 탈고한 지 47년 만에 쓴 저자의 말에서, 대중이 동성애와 관련해 정말 싫어하는 것은 동성애 자체가 아니라 그것에 대해 생각해야 한다는 사실이었다고 회고했다.

포스터의 성적 취향이 그의 문학세계에 끼친 형성력은, 동성애를 제재로 취하는 차원을 훨씬 넘어선다. 영문학자 김선형은 성(性)이라는 사적 영역에 공적인 요소가 끼치는 압력을 절감할 수밖에 없었기에 포스터는 사적인 인간관계의 오염과 단절을 극복할 방안을 평생 부심했다고 말한다. 그리고 “여성이 주인공인 소설에서 소통 가능성을 중성적 가치인 인간적 소통과 유대에서 찾는 데에서 그의 성정체성이 암묵적으로 드러난다”고 평한다. <모리스>를 탈고하던 해, 포스터가 사랑했던 두 번째 남자 마수드가 결혼했다. 그리고 1924년 <인도로 가는 길>이 있기까지 포스터의 첫 번째 작가적 침묵이 시작됐다. 그러나 그것은 불모의 시간은 아니었다. 포스터는 1917년 알렉산드리아에서 만난 전차 차장 모하메드 엘 아들과 난생처음 육체와 정신이 합일된 사랑을 경험했다. 1차대전이 끝난 1918년 결혼한 모하메드는 4년 뒤 폐병으로 죽었다.

<인도로 가는 길>(A Passage to India, 1924)이 제목을 빌린 휘트먼의 시는 동서를 연결하는 수에즈 운하의 개통을 축하하는 시였으나 포스터의 소설은 동서의 만남에 비관적이다. 영국 처녀 아델라는 인도에서 판사로 일하는 약혼자 로니의 어머니 무어 부인과 함께 인도를 찾는다. ‘진짜 인도’를 보고픈 두 여자의 소망을 정착지 영국인들이 무시하는 가운데, 무어 부인은 친절한 이슬람 의사 아지즈와 친교를 맺는다. 한편 약혼자에 대한 감정에 확신을 잃은 아델라는 무어 부인과 함께 마라바르 동굴 소풍에 동행했다가 갑자기 아지즈를 강간미수로 고발한다. 영국인들의 집단 히스테리 속에서 인도인에게 우호적인 교육자 필딩은 아지즈 편에 선다. 제국주의가 조직한 세계가 개인의 우정을 조각내는 광경을 그린 <인도로 가는 길>은 영국에서는 정치적 논란을, 미국에서는 큰 호응을 얻었고 후일 탈식민주의 비평가들에게는 “제국주의의 인간적 얼굴을 강화하는 소설”이라는 비판도 받았다. <인도로 가는 길>의 구조는 겉으로는 미스터리지만 정작 아무것도 폭로하지 않는 텅 빈 이야기다. 포스터는 그 속에서 그저 인물을 사건과 정황에 부딪히게 한 다음, 돌아오는 메아리를 통해 그들을 고립시키는 힘의 실체를 가늠한다. 포스터는 “연결하라!”를 좌우명으로 삼았지만 공존이 얼마나 달성하기 힘든 과제인지 입증하는 데에 그의 소설을 바쳤다. 필딩과 아지즈는 친구가 되는 데에 실패한다. <모리스>의 게이 연인들은 숨어들 숲을 찾아야 하고 <하워즈 엔드>의 화해는 불안한 휴전일 따름이다. 포스터는 심지어 <전망 좋은 방>에서도 조지가 나무에 깔려 죽는 결말을 써놓았다고 한다.

소설가 포스터의 두 번째 침묵은 끝까지 깨지지 않았다. 45살에 <인도로 가는 길>을 출간한 그는 서평, 에세이, 전기를 쓰며 46년을 더 살았다. 현대 문학사의 최대 미스터리로 불리는 포스터의 침묵에 대해서는 추론이 분분하다. 그가 사랑했던 세계가 전쟁과 함께 사라졌기 때문일까? 현대사회 비판이 이미 쓰러진 나무에 가하는 도끼질처럼 느껴져서일까? 아니면 완전한 사랑을 맛본 그에게 더이상 픽션의 위장은 필요하지 않았기 때문일까? 포스터는 다만 이렇게 변명했다. “현대의 세계는 시인에게 더 어울린다. 현대 세계가 가진 광대한 화두는 소설이 다루기 어렵다.”

포스터는 주도면밀하게 회색 지대를 사수한 작가였다. 그는 자신의 국가와 계급, 문화를 자성하면서도 그것의 반명제가 가진 한계까지 파악해 선악의 복잡다단함에 근접했다. 그는 제인 오스틴을 잇는 도덕적 사실주의자이면서 인간의 의식에 도사린 결함을 간파한 모더니스트였다. 의식의 흐름이 아니라 행동을 묘사하는 그의 문장은 비유나 접속사도 아끼는 경제성을 자랑하지만, 곳곳에 간결한 암시와 상징으로 의미의 웅덩이를 파놓는다. 사적 인간관계와 윤리를 세상의 유일한 반석이라 믿는 까닭에 개인을 종교, 국가, 가족와 마찰시키며 부단히 회의하는 포스터의 소설은 성격 급한 독자의 짜증을 부르기도 한다. “E. M. 포스터는 언제나 차 주전자를 덥히기만 한다. 아주 세련되게. 그렇지만 차를 대접하는 일은 없다”라 불평한 캐서린 맨스필드도 그중 하나다. 그러나 학자 라이오넬 트릴링의 변호대로 끝없는 회의는 도덕적 좌표를 아예 내던져버리려는 세태에 유용한 방패다.

신으로부터 생의 반환점을 돌았다는 통보라도 받았을까. 포스터는 소설로 형상화했던 반인습과 진보의 정신, 자유주의 가치를 직접화법으로 옹호하며 45살 이후 반생을 살았다. 49살에는 레즈비언 소설 <고독의 우물> 판금에 항의하는 캠페인을 주도했고 59살에는 “조국을 배신하는 것과 친구를 배신하는 것 가운데 선택하라면 조국을 배신할 용기를 갖고 싶다”는 선언으로 파문을 일으켰다. 81살에는 D. H. 로렌스의 <채털리 부인의 사랑> 재판에 변호인쪽 증인으로 나섰다. 사랑도 결코 멈추지 않았다. 1925년 만난 해리 데일리와 3년을 사귀었고 1930년 만난 경찰관 밥 버킹엄과 사랑에 빠졌다. 버킹엄의 결혼은 53살의 포스터에게 또 한번 채찍을 내리쳤으나 쓰러뜨리진 못했다. 버킹엄 아들의 대부가 된 포스터는 버킹엄과 평생 로맨틱한 관계를 유지했다. 어머니가 향년 90살로 세상을 떠나자 67살의 포스터는 “아주 젊은 사람이나 아주 늙은 사람들을 위한 장소”라고 부른 킹스 칼리지로 거처를 옮겼다. 1970년 방에서 쓰러진 91살의 포스터는 밥 버킹엄의 집으로 옮겨진 다음에야 숨을 거뒀다. 이번만큼은 연인이 그를 떠나기 전에, 그가 먼저 연인을 떠났다. 그리고 1년 뒤 마침내 <모리스>가 출간됐다. 그토록 필사적인 해피 엔딩으로 끝난 소설을 누구도 쉽사리 떠올릴 수 없었을 것이다.

영화를 불신한 소설가, 영화가 짝사랑한 소설가

<전망 좋은 방>

E. M. 포스터는 영화를 불신했다. “나는 사람들이 읽으라고 책을 썼다”고 단언한 그는 생전에 영화판권을 팔라는 요청을 거절했다. 미국의 외교정책에 분노한 나머지 미국 자본으로 만드는 영화에 원작 제공을 거부했다는 설도 있다. 작가 사후에 완성된 첫 번째 포스터 원작 영화는 1984년작 <인도로 가는 길>. 조셉 로지, 제임스 아이보리 등을 제치고 데이비드 린 감독이 판권을 잡았고 페기 애시크로프트가 오스카 여우조연상을 수상했다. 하지만 영화계의 포스터 권위자는 <전망 좋은 방> <모리스> <하워즈 엔드>를 만든 머천트-아이보리팀이다. 흥미로운 점은 포스터 문학의 정수를 영화로 옮긴 이들이 철저한 코스모폴리탄 집단이라는 점. 이스마일 머천트는 뭄바이 출신의 무슬림으로 미국에서 활동하는 제작자고, 제임스 아이보리 감독은 캘리포니아 출신으로 한때 인도에서 거주했다. 작가 루스 프라워 야발라는 폴란드계 유대인으로 독일을 거쳐 영국으로 건너온 다음 인도 건축가와 결혼했다.

“<전망 좋은 방>? 아, 그거 영화로 봤지. <오만과 편견>이랑 원작자가 같은 것 아냐?”

따지고 보면 다 영화 때문이다. 우리가 <전망 좋은 방> <하워즈 엔드> <인도로 가는 길> <모리스>의 원작자 E. M. 포스터(1879∼1970)를 한 세기 앞선 제인 오스틴이나 뉴욕에서 태어난 헨리 제임스 심지어 <남아있는 나날>을 쓴 가즈오 이시구로와 혼동하게 된 것은. 우선 그들이 창조한 남녀는 대체로 약혼과 결혼을 둘러싼 소동을 빈번히 일으키고, 유산을 놓고 갈등하며, 이탈리아 여행지에서 인생의 의미를 각성하기 일쑤다. 부풀린 스커트 자락과 티파티, 녹색 장원의 이미지는 이방 관객이 그들의 작품을 한 덩어리로 기억하도록 현혹한다. 세월이 흘러 영국 중산층의 계급성과 완고한 매너도 유적이 된 지금, 문학도가 아닌 우리에게 그들을 분별하는 과제는 얼 그레이와 다르질링 홍차의 구별만큼이나 긴급할 게 없다.

영화의 감미로운 잔향만으로 만족하는 이들에게도, 지난 3월 말 완간된 한국어판 E. M. 포스터 전집(고정아, 민승남, 이종인 옮김, 열린책들 펴냄)은 사양할 수 없는 만찬이다. E. M. 포스터는 “언어의 장벽은 간혹 좋은 것만 통과시킨다”는 낙관을 표명한 바 있지만, 이제야 번역된 그의 소설은 찬장 속에서 뒤늦게 발견한 꿀단지와 비슷한 기쁨을 안겨준다. 사회 관계를 유머러스하게 관찰하는 영국 소설의 전통을 계승하는 동시에 개인의 내면을 모더니스트의 눈으로 그려낸 포스터의 장·단편은 서로 다른 문화, 인종, 계급, 섹슈얼리티, 세계관 사이에 팬 골짜기- 종종 그 골짜기는 한 사람의 영혼 속에 있다- 에서 피어나는 드라마를 주말 연속극만큼 흥미진진하게 보여준다. 호흡 짧은 독자라면 반짝이는 문장과 통찰을 건져올리는 재미만으로도 심심하지 않을 것이다. 말이 나온 김에 E. M. 포스터의 서재를 방문하기로 하자. 그곳은 오로지 먼 나라로의 여행과 책, 두 가지에 삶을 반분했던 E. M. 포스터에게 세계의 반쪽이기도 했으니.

M. 포스터는 (어머니와 함께) 이탈리아, 그리스를 돌아봤고 독일에서 가정교사로 몇달을 보냈다. <천사들도 발 딛기 두려워하는 곳> <기나긴 여행> <전망 좋은 방> 등 초기작에 등장하는 이국 풍경도 이때 포스터의 마음에 들어왔다. 26살에 출간한 첫 장편소설 <천사가 발 딛기 두려워하는 곳>(Where Angels Fear to Tread, 1905)은 포스터가 “세계의 학교이자 놀이터”라고 예찬한 나라 이탈리아의 몬테리아노와 영국 소스턴을 오가며 펼쳐지는 멜로드라마다. 죽은 남편의 가족이 요구하는 규범에 매여 살던 릴리아 헤리턴은 이웃 처녀 캐롤라인과 떠난 이탈리아 여행에서 핸섬한 청년 지노에게 반해 몬테리아노에 주저앉는다. 가문의 재산과 명예를 염려한 헤리턴 부인은 아들 필립을 보내 막으려 하지만 둘은 이미 약혼한 터다. 헤리턴 가족이 다친 자존심을 추스르는 동안 신혼부부의 문화적, 기질적 차이는 그들의 결혼에 그늘을 드리우고 릴리아는 아기를 낳다 숨진다. 체면에 떠밀린 헤리턴 부인은 이번에는 아기를 데려오라고 아들과 딸에게 명한다. 풍속 코미디로 출발한 소설은 비극적 멜로드라마로 고양됐다가 “가장 멋진 일은 지나가버렸다”는 깨달음으로 끝난다. 포스터는 “내 소설에는 나, 내가 싫어하는 사람, 내가 동경하는 사람의 세 가지 인간형밖에 없다”고 말한 바 있는데 처녀작 <천사가 발 딛기 두려워하는 곳>으로부터 그 구도는 명확하다. 인습을 초월한 척하지만 실상 그렇지 못한 필립, 천진하고 아름답지만 탐욕스러운 지노, 오만과 편견으로 만사를 그르치는 해리엇은 이후 포스터의 작품 세계 속에서 각기 계보를 형성한다.

처녀작을 호평받았으나 젊은 작가는 끔찍하게 불행했다. 그즈음 휴 메러디스가 결혼했기 때문이다. 자살까지 상상하던 포스터는 라틴어를 교습한 인도인 유학생 사이드 로스 마수드에게 마음을 옮긴다. 친구의 결혼이 가져다준 배신감은 1907년작 <기나긴 여행>(The Longest Journey)에 점점이 배어난다. 유전적으로 다리가 불편해 연애운이 없는 리키는 “착한 아들, 다정한 남편, 책임감 있는 아버지… 자연이 원하는 것은 이런 것이고 친구에게는 그 나머지 시간이 할애된다”라며 우정의 보잘것없는 지위를 탄식한다. 케임브리지 철학도 리키는 친구 앤셀과 교감하지만 실질을 숭상하는 여인 애그니스와 결혼하면서 점점 황폐해진다. 기숙학교 교사로 시들어가던 그의 삶은 어느 날 찾아온 앤셀과 몰랐던 사생아 동생의 존재로 다시 전환을 맞는다. <기나긴 여행>은 변덕스럽고 감상적인 플롯으로 악명 높다(그의 장편 중 유일하게 영화화되지 않았다). 죽음이나 치명적 사고가 느닷없이 독자를 혼비백산시키는 포스터 소설의 특징이 이보다 노골적인 작품도 없다. 평론가 윌 베버리지의 착실한 계산에 따르면 <기나긴 여행>에서는 갓난아기를 제외한 등장인물의 44%가 돌연사하는 운명을 맞는데 이러한 비운은 주인공도 비켜가지 못한다. 비평가 라이오넬 트릴링의 지적대로 <기나긴 여행>의 리키는 성장하는 대신 <적과 흑>의 쥘리앙 소렐처럼 깨달음을 끌어안고 산화한다. 미학적으로 방기된 듯한 이 야성적 소설에 대한 작가의 편애는 대단하다. 포스터는 <기나긴 여행>이 유일하게 그를 먼저 ‘찾아온’ 소설이라고 소개하며 “반문학의 정신이 팔꿈치로 밀어내기라도 하듯 일부러 잘못된 길을 택하기도 했다”고 회고했다.

“나는 당신을 보면 어떤 전망이 떠올라요. 특정한 종류의 전망이 말이에요. 당신이 나를 보고 방을 떠올린다고 잘못된 건 아니죠.” - <전망 좋은 방>의 세실 바이스

20대 후반의 포스터는 암탉이 달걀을 낳듯 소설을 썼다. <기나긴 여행>과 연년생인 <전망 좋은 방>(A Room with a View, 1908)은 포스터의 가장 쾌활하고 낙천적인 로맨스다. 남의 기준으로 가치를 판단하던 영국 처녀 루시와 염세적 무력감에 빠져 있던 청년 조지 에머슨이 이탈리아 플로렌스에서 나눈 키스를 계기로 각자의 감옥에서 벗어난다. 그 와중에 발생하는 희생자가 루시의 약혼자인 금욕적 신사 세실 바이스. “저는 직업이 없습니다. 제 데카당스한 면을 보여주는 또 한 가지 사례죠”라는 대사가 우습긴 해도, 포스터가 세실을 다루는 태도는 경멸과는 거리가 멀다. 유산으로 먹고살며 사회의 관찰자로 남는 남자 캐릭터에게 포스터는 번번이 희미한 연민을 표한다. <전망 좋은 방>은 산들바람 같은 문체, 행복한 결혼으로 끝나는 결말 때문에 제인 오스틴의 소설에 비교된다. 포스터는 <전망 좋은 방>의 해피 엔딩이 꽤나 마음에 걸렸던 것 같다. ‘방 없는 전망’이라는 제목을 붙인 ‘지은이의 말’에서 포스터는 “그리고 그들은 어떻게 됐을까. 나는 조지와 루시가 어디서 사는지 떠올릴 수 없다”고 고백했다. 그러나 결혼과 연애 앞에 포스터가 설정하는 장애는 좀더 다양하고 복잡하다. 그의 연인들은 계급은 물론 인종, 성적 취향, 민족성을 저울질한다. 한편 포스터의 인물들은 오스틴의 인물에 비교하면 훨씬 불합리하고 충동적이다. 예컨대 <오만과 편견>의 리즈는 다아시가 악당이 아님을 확인하고야 감정을 확정하지만 루시는 그렇지 않다. 아마도 포스터의 인물들이 오스틴의 인물들과 언쟁을 벌인다면 백전백패일 것이다. 포스터의 윤리적 스타일에 주목한 영문학자 제이디 스미스에 따르면, 19세기 작가 오스틴이 세계와 자아를 합리적으로 이해하기를 원했다면 20세기 작가 포스터는 인간들이 그러한 이해를 근본적으로 겁낸다고 보았다.

뉴욕 타임즈 100권 리스트야 저리 가그라!

Derek Attridge (James Joyce의 전문가), Cedric Watts (Joseph Conrad와 Graham Greene의 권위자), Laura Marcus (Virginia Woolf), and David Mariott (시인이자 미국 흑인 문학의 권위자) 등등 20명의 국제적인 비평가들이 뽑은 죽기전에 읽어야할 1001권 리스트가 책으로 나왔다. 이 리스트의 특징이라면 단지 클래식이나 순수문학작품 뿐 아니라 로맨스, SF, 스릴러 등 다양한 장르를 폭넓게 아우르고 있으며 200년 이후 출간된 최신작들에도 많은 비중을 두었다는 점이다.

영국 미국에서 동시에 3월에 출간 되었지만 주 저자가 영국 사람인 탓인지 영국 부커상 수상작들이 많이 포함되어 있는게 또 하나의 특색이랄까.

이번주에 읽고있는 책도 두권이나 끼어있으니 흐뭇하다. 웬지 1001권이 얼마 안 남은 듯 싶기도 하고...

하나는 이 리스트에서 일등인, 아니 그냥 맨 위에 있는 Never let me go이다. 일본계인 작가지만 너무나도 영국적인 글을 쓰는 Ishiguro를 나는 평소에 그의 엄청나게 긴 문장과 남발하는 쉼표로 한문장 읽다 숨이 모자라 쓰러지거나 문장의 처음이 기억 안 날까봐  피했었건만. (같이 보고 있던 존 버거의 너무 짧아서 허전하다 싶은 문장과 비교를 하면 더 심해진다) 이번책도 사실은 더 읽을까 말까 하던 중이었는데... 흠 끝을 봐야만 하겄다.

요즘의 느릿느릿함으로는 언제 다 읽으리? 우선 2000년 이후 책들 만이라도 올해 안에?

많은 시들이 늦은 봄의 정취와 꽃들이 떨어짐을 아쉬어하는 마음들이 멋스럽게 드러나 있어 이 계절에 읽으며 절로 마음이 흥겹고 애틋해진다. 번역과 더불어 한시 원문과 짧은 주해도 있어, 한문으로 시의 원래 맛을 느끼는 것도 더욱 즐겁다. 이토록 풍부한 삶의 정취와 생각들의 보고를 향유할 수 있음은 얼마나 큰 우리만의 또다른 혜택인지 

 

送春

三月三十日  春歸日復暮
惆悵問春風  明朝應不住
送春曲江上  眷眷東西顧
但見撲水花  紛紛不知數
人生似行客  兩足無停步
日日進前程  前程幾多路
兵刀與水火  盡可違之去
唯有老到來  人間無避處
感時良爲已  獨倚池南樹
今日送春心  心如別親故


3월 30일,
이 봄도 가고
하루해도 또 저물어 간다.
너무나 서글퍼 봄바람에게 물었다.
"내일 아침엔 분명 떠나가고 없겠지?"

 

곡강(曲江) 가에서
이 봄을 떠나보내며,
아쉬운 마음 달랠 길 없어
이리저리 둘러본다.
보이는 건 물 위에 떨어지는 꽃잎
셀 수도 없이 어지럽게 흩날린다.

 

인생이란 나그네와 같은 것
두 발을 잠시 멈출 겨를도 없이,
날마다 앞을 향해 나아가건만
앞길은 또 얼마나 될까?

 

우리 인생에서 전쟁과 재난은
모두 다 피해 갈 수 있건만,
오로지 다가오는 늙음만은
인간 세상에 피할 곳이 없구나.

 

지나가는 봄날에 대한 감회,
어쩔 수 없는 것이라 체념하며
홀로 곡강 남쪽 나무에 기대어 선다.
오늘 이 봄을 떠나보내는 마음,
정든 이와 헤어지는 마음 같구나.
