뒤늦게 DVD를 통해 <페임>을 접했습니다. 뉴욕 46번가 공연예술학교 '라 구아디아' 10대들의 애환을 그린 1980년 알란 파카 감독의 뮤지컬 영화죠. 사실 우리에겐 극장판 영화보단 동명의 TV시리즈가 더 익숙하죠. 알란 파카 감독의 최근작인 뮤지컬영화 <에비타>가 대사 없이 오직 노래로만 이루어진 것과 달리 <페임>은 극의 비중이 높습니다. 그만큼 노래는 몇 곡 되지 않지만 극의 흐름과 자연스럽게 연결돼 더 깊은 감동으로 다가오는 것 같습니다.
뮤지컬 영화답지 않게 극에 치중하던 초반부의 침묵을 깨는 건 구내식당의 소란이었습니다. 그 소란 속에 브루노의 피아노 반주에 맞춰 아이린 카라(코코 역)가 부르는 노래가 'Hot Lunch Jam'이죠.
역시 이 영화에서 가장 익숙한 노래는 아이린 카라가 부른 'fame'입니다. 영화 중반부 택시운전기사인 작곡가 브루노의 아버지가 학교 앞에 차를 세우고 이 음악을 크게 틀자 학생들이 거리로 뛰쳐나와 이 노래와 맞춰 멋진 춤을 추는 장면이죠.

텅빈 무대에서 코코는 피아노 반주와 함께 브루노가 작곡한 'Out Here On My Own'를 애절하게 부릅니다. 무대에 들어왔다 둘의 모습을 본 브루노의 아버지는 무대에 앉아 이들을 지켜보다 곡이 끝나자 둘에게 박수를 보내죠.

4학년 졸업반이 된 학생들은 마지막 졸업공연을 갖습니다. 클래식 고향악단과 브루노는 멋진 전자음악 반주에 맞춰 코코, 몽고메리, 그리고 연극반 학생들의 합창하는 'I Sing The Body Electric', 여기에 리로이 등 무용과 학생들의 화려한 춤이 펼쳐지며 영화는 막을 내립니다.
