법률과 풍습에 의하여 인위적으로 문명의 한복판에 지옥을 만들고 인간적 숙명으로 신성한 운명을 복잡하게 만드는 영원한 사회적 형벌이 존재하는 한, 무산계급에 의한남성의 추락, 기아에 의한 여성의 타락, 암흑에 의한 어린이의 위축, 이 시대의 이 세 가지 문제가 해결되지 않는 한, 어떤 계급에 사회적 질식이 가능한 한, 다시 말하자면, 그리고 더욱 넓은 견지에서 말하자면, 지상에 무지와 빈곤이 존재하는 한, 이 책 같은 종류의 책들도 무익하지는 않으리라.

2시간 반이 길지 않았다.
왜 인기 없는 장르의 러닝타임마저 긴 이 영화가 지금 많은 사람들이 찾는 영화인 걸까, 책을 읽으며 더 생각해 봐야겠다.
판틴역의 앤 헤서웨이는 그야말로 숨 못쉬게 아름다웠다.
나가수에서 1번 뽑았는데, 1위하는 마냥, 첫부분에 가장 감동적이었는데, 그 후로 두 시간동안 차례차례 인상깊은 등장인물들이 무대에 올랐다 내리는 동안, 앤 헤서웨이의 판틴이 머릿속에서 떠나지 않는다.
영화가 어찌나 어두운지. 2시간반 내내 시껌껌해서, 맨 앞 자리 겨우 예매해서 갔는데, 눈 침침해 혼났다.
이렇게 어둡고, 당췌 희망이라곤 보이지 않고, 등장인물들은 대사가 아니라 염불을 외는데(솔직이 노래들은^^; 연기는 좋았지만) 마지막에는 영화 내내 가장 죽이고 싶었던 등장인물 커플에마저 연민이 일 정도였으니, 영화는 좋았다고 생각한다.
기억에 오래오래 남는 엄청난 이미지들이 많았다. 등장인물 클로즈업의 연출도 인상적이었다. 첫부분의 판틴과 마지막의 마리우스. 자베르의 마지막과 하수도에서의 장면들, 판틴이 나오는 거의 모든 장면, 미워 죽겠던 에포닌 부부, 뭔가 비현실적으로 예쁜 코제트, 혁명 장면, 등등등 등등등
