이성과 숙의로 쌓아올린 성과와 성숙이 전세계에서 공격받고 있다. 좌우를 막론하고 리버럴리즘을 체득하지 못한 각국 정치세력들은 설익은 이념과 지지율을 좇아 개인성을 억압하면서 밑바닥을 향한 경쟁을 하려는 것만 같다. 지배와 이권을 위해 이민자, 여성, 성적 소수자에 대한 혐오, 관료 조직, 전문가 집단에 대한 반감이 즉자적으로 동원된다.
개인 윤리 차원에서라도, 세월이 흘러도 미래세대와 불화하지 않고 그나마 꼰대가 덜 될 수 있는 길은 스스로 철저히 개인주의자, 자유주의자가 되려고 노력하는 방법밖에는 없지 않을까. 그 어떤 고매한 이상, 완벽한 정의론도 시대의 한계에서 자유롭지 못한 터에, 그래야 타인의 자유와 존엄을 편견 없이 존중할 수 있기 때문이다.
세상에 실재하는 다양한 동기와 감정, 그것이 만들어내는 상호작용과 구조를 무시한 채 결과를 직접 통제하려는 정책은 냉전 시대에 극복되었어야 하지 않나. 근본에서 천리마운동과 뭐가 다른가. 문화대혁명의 감성과 사고를 극복하지 못하고 역사결의를 준비하고 있는 나라를 기어이 따라가려는가.
거창한 구호 이전에, 공사 구분의 윤리부터 갖추었으면 좋겠다. 우리도 그들에게 주권을 위임하기 전에 그 배후의 사사로운 동기와 욕망을 밝게 가려냈으면 좋겠다.

Populists denigrate liberal edifices such as science and the rule of law as façades for a plot by the deep state against the people. They subordinate facts and reason to tribal emotion. The enduring falsehood that the presidential election in 2020 was stolen points to where such impulses lead. If people cannot settle their differences using debate and trusted institutions, they resort to force. - P7
