June 2026 12th Order:

Snow Country (雪国) by Yasunari Kawabata
I Am a Cat by Soseki Natsume
Resistance, Rebellion, and Death: Essays by Albert Camus
3 for the price of 2 Book Sale,

Snow Country (雪国) by Yasunari Kawabata
(among the three novels the Nobel Committee cited in 1968,
when Kawabata was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature)
Physical Backdrop=Emotional Landscape,

I Am a Cat ( 吾輩は猫である) by Soseki Natsume

Kokoro (こころ) by Natsume Soseki
“Like the first whiff of burning incense,
or like the taste of one's first cup of saké,
there is in love that moment when all its power is felt.”
― Natsume Soseki, Kokoro
“On the whole, all people are good, or at least they're normal.
The frightening thing is that they can suddenly turn bad
when it comes to the crunch.”
― Natsume Sōseki, Kokoro
“I felt for her a love that was close to pious faith.
You may find it odd that I use a specifically religious word
to describe my feelings for a young woman, but real love, I firmly believe,
is not so different from the religious impulse.
Whenever I saw her face, I felt that I myself had become beautiful.”
― Sōseki Natsume, Kokoro

Silence (沈默) 침묵 by Shusaku Endo
This novel was notably compared to
Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory,
leading Endo to be referred to as "the Graham Greene of Japan."

Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition Series

Graham Greene 7 Books
The Power and the Glory <
Orient Express
Travel with My Aunt
Brighton Rock <
The Heart of the Matter <
The Quiet American <
The End of the Affair <

The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories
by Jay Rubin (Editor, Translator), Haruki Murakami (Introduction)
Resistance, Rebellion, and Death: Essays.

Resistance, Rebellion, and Death: Essays by Albert Camus
“A writer has some hope even if he is not appreciated.
He assumes that his works will bear witness to what he was.”
― Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays
“O my soul, do not aspire to immortal life,
but exhaust the limits of the possible.
—Pindar, Pythian iii”
― Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays
Absurd, Suicide, Death,
Revolt, Rebellion, Resistance, Revolution,

The Stranger & The Myth of Sisyphus
If you like this book, <The Stranger>,
I recommend you read <The Myth of Sisyphus>
which was published in the same year, 1942 along with <The Stranger>.
Camus expounds the tenets of his philosophy, ˝Absurdism˝,
the ideas of which form the basis for much of the action of <The Stranger>.
<The Myth of Sisyphus>˝ pins down the absurd precisely:
Neither the world nor human thinking in and of itself is absurd.
Rather, the absurd emerges when human thinking
tries to impose its order, reason, and logic
on the meaningless or indifferent world,
a perpetual futile goal.
In <The Stranger> the absurd is clearly demonstrated
by the trial, the lawyers, and the numerous priests and Christians
who attempted to convert Meursault to religion.
Camus
나는 다시 The Myth of Sisyphus 로 돌아가곤 하는데
이 번에 구입한 Resistance, Rebellion, and Death 을
“Man stands face to face with the irrational.
He feels within him his longing for happiness and for reason.
The absurd is born of this confrontation between the human need
and the unreasonable silence of the world.”
― Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays
“This very heart which is mine will forever remain indefinable to me.
Between the certainty I have of my existence
and the content I try to give to that assurance, the gap will never be filled.
Forever I shall be a stranger to myself.”
― Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays
