오디오북으로는 적합하지 않은

오디오북으로 들었다. 책에 대한 일체의 정보도 접하지 않고 얼마나 내용을 이해할 수 있는지 실험해 본 거였는데..오디오북을 몇 번 듣다보니 처음에 조금만 들어보면 감이 온다. 이걸 끝까지 들을 수 있을지, 포기하게 될지..대화가 많은 비중을 차지하는 편이면 일단은 끝까지 들을 수 있는 가능성이 커진다. 아무래도 짤막한 문장들이 이어지니 더 이해하기 쉬운가 보다.  

그래서 결국 장장 11시간짜리 테이프를 다 들을 수 있었다. 그 결과 내가 이해한 내용은..아홉살 짜리 소년이 911사건으로 아버지를 잃게 되고, 육친의 죽음을 경험한 할아버지와 할머니 그밖에 다른 여러 사람들을 만나면서 아버지의 죽음을 받아들이고 상처를 치유하기 시작하게 된다(육친의 죽음으로 인한 상처가 치유가 되겠는가..절대 안 된다. 순간순간 잊혀지는 것뿐.)는 이야기 정도..다 듣고 책에 대한 정보를 검색해 보니 그렇게 절창이라는데..그것까지는 난 잘 모르겠다..

이것도 또 영화로 만드나보다..이제 드디어 911 사건이 소설로 영화로 나오는 구나..그럼 그 상처도 치유되기 시작한 건가..어떤 사건이 일어나고 난 직후에는 보도만이 있을 뿐이고 시간이 흐른 뒤에 제일 먼저 나오는 것이 시, 그 다음이 소설, 그 다음이 영화라는 말을 들은 것 같은데 맞는 말인 것 같다.

무기력함과 외로움

번역본으로 2번, 원본으로 1번..역시 원본으로 읽으니..1920년대 미국의 퇴폐적이고 무기력한 상류층의 모습을 더 잘 느낄 수 있는 것 같다. 그들의 무기력함과 개츠비의 외로움이 와 닿는다. 개츠비 얼마나 외로웠을까...

유치하지만은 않은 소녀들의 우정

며칠 사이로 태어난 네 명의 십대 여자아이들의 우정을 그린 이야기인데..그녀들의 엄마들도 모두 친구다. 청바지를 하나 사서 돌려 입는데 그 청바지를 입으면 모든 일이 잘 된다고 생각하는 그런 이야기다. 유치한 것 같지만 나름대로 아이들의 우정이 아름답게 느껴지기도 하다.   

챕터가 구분되지 않고 청바지 그림으로 내용이 구분되는데 거기게 쓰여있는 명언들도 괜찮다. 그 중에서.

의외로 잔인한 이야기

Life of Pi (Audio CD, Unabridged)
얀 마텔 지음, Jeff Woodman 읽음 / Highbridge Co / 2003년 1월

Yann Martel의 '파이 이야기' 읽기를 시도했다가 지루해서 던져버렸던 책. 그래도 부커상 수상작이고 하도 감동적이고 반전이 놀랍다는 반응이 있어서 또 recorded book으로 도전. 그러나 오디오북으로 읽은 '파이 이야기'는 더 지겨웠다. 오디오북에는 맞지 않는 이야기. 아무래도 오디오북에는 그저 대화가 많고 눈에 띠는 사건이 자주 터져 줘야 하는데 그렇지 않으면 계속 집중하기가 어렵다.



After the tragic sinking of a cargo ship in the Pacific, one solitary lifeboat remains, carrying a hyena, a zebra, a female orangutan, a Bengal tiger, and a 16-year-old- Indian boy named Pi. His story is a dazzling work of imagination that will delight and astound listeners in equal measure. It is a triumph of storytelling and a tale that will, as one character puts it, make you believe in God.



반전이라는 게 동물이야기를 사람으로 대치시킨 것인데, 그렇다면 정말 잔인한 이야기가 되니 사람들이 놀라는 듯. 거의 이 작품은 상상력으로 이루어진 작품이라는 생각. 아무래도 난 '노인과 바다'류에는 감동받지 못하나보다.



전체 3부로 구성되어 있고, 1부에서는 주인공 파이의 어린 시절이 나오고 2부에서는 캐나다로 이민가는 도중 배가 침몰해서 구조선에 파이와 동물들만 살아남아서 결국은 파이와 호랑이만 남는다는 것, 그리고 해가 바뀌어서야 그들이 구조된다는 것 3부에서는 일본인과 인터뷰를 하는 장면인데 여기서 그 유명한 반전이 나온다. 여러 동물들이 죽고(서로에 의해) 결국 호랑이와 파이 소년만 살아남아 바다를 떠도는 이야기를 믿지 않으니 결국 파이는 그 모든 이야기를 사람의 이야기로 바꾸니 그제서야 일본인은 잔인한 이야기라고 하면서 수긍을 한다는 결말. 여기서 우리를 생각하게 만들어 주는 듯.



내가 좋아하는 Alberto Manguel도 "Those who would believe that the art of fiction is moribund-let them read Yann Martel with astonishment, delight, and gratitude." 라고 했다는데, 나는 왜 이리 진부하게만 느껴지는지.. 역시 코드가 맞아야 하나보다.



그래도 맘에 드는 문장 하나-파이가 인터뷰 과정에서 자신의 경험담을 믿을 수 없다는 반응에 대한 대답으로 한 말 : Love is hard to believe, ask any lover. Life is hard to believe, ask any scientist. God is hard to believe, ask any believer.

명상과 잠언

파울로 코엘료의 '연금술사'는 전세계적인 베스트셀러로 알려져 있는데도 별로 감동을 받지 못한 기억이 있어서 한 번 도전. 영어로 번역된 걸(코엘료는 브라질 사람) 읽으면 어떨까 하는 호기심과 recorded book의 테잎이 3개 밖에 되지 않는다는 사실에 혹해서. 더군다나 Jeremy Irons가 읽어 준다니 금상첨화. 하지만 명상적이고 잠언적인 코엘료의 이야기는 집중하기 어려웠고 무거워지는 눈꺼풀때문에.. 

다시 읽은 '연금술사'는 역시 예전과 같이 큰 감동은 없었다. 생각해 보면 내가 유독 fable에 약한 것 같기도 하다. 여행기 형식도 안 좋아하는 것 같구.  

'연금술사'의 내용은 어찌 보면 너무나 뻔한 이야기가 아닐까 싶다. 하긴 소설 중에 뻔하지 않은 이야기가 얼마나 되랴마는..우화의 형식만을 빌렸을 뿐 어느 정도 교과서적인 것 같기도 하고. 그런데도 현대인들이 열광하는 걸 보면 현대 사회가 어지간히 복잡하긴 한가 보다.

아무래도 코엘료의 작품은 'Veronika Decides to Die'가 아닐까 싶다.
