2006년 제59회 일본추리작가협회상 수상작인데다 온다 리쿠의 신작이라 큰 기대를 갖고 읽은 책이다.

이 책은 대량 독살사건의 관계자들의 인터뷰를 기록한 독백같은 이야기와 객관적인 시점으로 사건의 상황을 묘사하는 이야기가 교차되면서 진행된다. 그래서 누가 진짜 범인인지 모호하다는 점이 현실적이고 흥미롭다.

번역한 사람의 이야기를 들어보면 독백과 묘사가 교차되면서 둘 사이에 모순점이 발견된다고 하는데 나는 빠르게 읽어나가서 인지 하나도 발견하지를 못했다.

우선 내가 파악한 줄거리를 말하자면 부모 없이 힘드게 살던 남매가 있었는데 여동생이 결혼을 앞두고 사고로 죽어버린다. 절망에 빠져 일도 못할 정도로 정신적 고통을 받던 오빠는 병원 옆자리에 있던 불교 화가를 통해 불교에 관심을 갖게되고 퇴원 후 절에 찾아가 심적 고통에서 구원을 받으려 한다. 그 와중에 동네의 큰 의원집의 눈먼 딸을 만나게 되고 가끔 이야기를 나누는 사이가 된다. 어느날 눈 먼 딸이 자신의 착잡한 기분을 이야기하며 큰 의미없이 한 말을 정신이 온전하지 못한 상태였던 오빠가 구원의 메세지로 받아들이고 의원집의 잔치날 독을 탄 술을 배달해 그 자리에 있던 사람들을 독살하게 된다. 그리고 사건 당일에 그 집에 놀러갔던 옆집 아이가 있었는데 독을 탄 술이 배달되기 전에 형제들을 부르러 집에 갔다가 살아남게 된다. 살아남은 형제중 여동생이 10년후 졸업논문으로 이 사건을 조사하다 책으로 출판하여 화제를 일으킨다. 그리고 또 시간이 형제들을 부르러 갔다가 살아남았던 아이가 자살을 하고 친구에게 편지를 남겨서 편지를 받은 친구가 사건 관계자들을 찾아 다니며 인터뷰를 한다. 사건 관계자들은 진짜 범인은 다른 사람이라고 한다. 라는 것이다.

인터뷰와 묘사가 번갈아 가며 진행되는 방식도 특이하고 인터뷰이와 인터뷰어의 대화체가 아닌 인터뷰이의 혼잣말 처럼 인터뷰이의 말만으로 구성되는데도 사건에 대한 정보와 감정 전달이 되는 점이 대단하다고 느껴진다.

하지만 밤의 피크닉 같은 작품에서 받은 감동을 다시 느끼고 싶은 나로서는 아쉬운 작품이다. 이런 미스터리는 다른 작가가 써도 되지 않은가. 다양한 작품을 쓰고 새로운 시도를 계속해나가는 것도 작가의 생명력이 길어진다는 점이 있지만 작가의 장점이 드러나지 않는 작품을 쓰는것 같아 아쉽다.
