한 사람은 성공하고 돌아왔고, 또 다른 사람은 그렇지 못했다. 그러나 이 책은 말한다. 두 사람 모두 지구의 끝을 정복한 위대한 탐험가였다고. 1911년, 노르웨이의 로알드 아문센과 영국의 로버트 스코트는 거의 같은 시기에 남극을 향해 떠난다. 잘 훈련받은 개들이 끄는 썰매를 탄 아문센은 빠르게 나아가 12월 14일 인류 최초로 남극점에 도착한다. 그러나 빙산과 폭풍우에 시달린 스코트는 이보다 늦게 도착한다. “뭔가 나부끼고 있어…. 맙소사, 노르웨이 국기잖아!” 하지만 비극은 여기서 끝나지 않았다. 추위와 눈보라로 스코트 탐험대는 귀로에 모두 숨을 거둔다. 아문센은 1928년 북극으로 떠났다가 행방불명된다. 그들의 탐험 이후, 인류는 그 전에 비해 많은 것을 알게 됐다.

독일의 어린이 논픽션 작가 피에르 마르크는 이 ‘위대한 탐험가’ 시리즈를 통해 “한 사람의 도전이 인류 역사에 얼마나 큰 획을 그었는지”에 대해 말한다. 시리즈의 다른 책, ‘제임스 쿡’에서는 반평생을 배 위에서 보내며 세계 지도를 완성한 선장을, ‘콜럼버스’에서는 미지의 대륙을 발견한 몽상가를 상세한 자료와 긴장감 넘치는 필치로 소개한다. 그러면서도 ‘탐험’이란 원주민에 대한 ‘침략’의 다른 의미였음도 놓치지 않는다.

‘유리의 성’ ‘바벨 2세’ ‘시관이와 병호의 모험’ 같은 만화들이 생소하지 않은 독자라면 어문각 ‘클로버 문고’를 여전히 기억하고 있을 것이다. 1970년대를 풍미했던 이 문고는 그야말로 당대 최고 수준의 만화들을 집대성한 보고와도 같았다. 그리고 고우영(1939~2005) 화백의 ‘80일간의 세계일주’는 그 문고에 섞여 두 권으로 나온 옛 만화였다.

고우영의 작품세계는 ‘수호지’ ‘일지매’ ‘삼국지’처럼 신문에 연재됐던 성인용과 ‘짱구박사’ ‘대야망’ ‘팔비당’과 같은 어린이·청소년용으로 크게 나눌 수 있다. 이 중 후자에 속하는 ‘80일간의 세계일주’는 고우영 만화 중에서도 매우 독특한 위치를 차지하고 있다. 대부분 동양 고전을 소재로 한 작품 중에서 19세기 빅토리아 시대의 영국이 배경인 만화는 희귀하기 때문. 하지만 가만히 보면 결코 낯선 캐릭터들은 아니다. 자세히 보면 주인공 필리어스 포그는 ‘수호지’의 ‘무송’을, 여주인공 아우다는 ‘반금련’을(사실 고우영 만화의 여성 캐릭터는 비슷비슷하다), 하인 파스파루트는 ‘삼국지’의 ‘쪼다 유비’를 닮았다.

30년의 세월을 뛰어넘어 복간된 이 반가운 작품은 지금 봐도 조금도 낡게 느껴지지 않는다. 쥘 베른이 1873년에 발표한 원작이 내기를 걸고 세계여행을 떠난 영국 신사의 모험담을 통해 세계를 시차 없는 동일한 시간으로 환원했다면, 고우영은 일견 시니컬한 원작에 살아 숨쉬는 듯한 생생한 캐릭터와 풍부한 정서를 불어넣어 바다 밖으로 나갈 수 없었던 한국 어린이들의 마음속에 꿈을 심었다. 차이가 있다면 지금은 그것이 ‘실현 가능한 꿈’이 됐다는 것이다.

인도의 정글과 홍콩의 아편굴, 대양에서의 폭풍과 대륙 횡단 열차에서 맞닥뜨린 인디언과의 총격전은 고우영의 붓을 통해 피와 살을 얻는다. ‘왼발과 오른발의 간격이 항상 똑같아 1밀리미터의 오차도 없는 영국인’이나 ‘싸움을 보다가 흥이 오르면 서로 치고받아 패싸움으로 번지는 미국인’처럼 서구 문명에 대한 재미있는 풍자도 나온다. 원작에 전혀 없는 부분, 야간 열차의 불빛을 본 야채 배달 소년이 “저기에 탄 사람들은 어디로 가는 것일까?”라고 한숨을 쉬는 장면이나 홍콩에서 카르나 호가 출항한 뒤 바다 위에 어리는 별 그림자를 묘사한 부분에선 작가가 얼마나 감성이 빼어난 사람이었는지 새삼 깨닫게 된다.

이번 복간본은 고우영 화백의 아들이자 디자이너인 성언씨가 새로 색채를 입혔다. 한창 작업에 몰두하고 있을 때 고 화백은 유명을 달리했다. 완성된 작품은 색감이 무척 뛰어나 마치 신작을 보는 착각에 빠지게 한다. 하지만 흑백의 명료한 대조 속에서 힘찬 펜터치가 살아나던 원작은 영영 볼 수 없는 것인지 아쉬움이 남는다. 또 비슷한 시기의 작품으로 처음부터 끝까지 ‘극화체’로만 이뤄졌던 소년세계 연재본 어린이용 ‘삼국지’(일간스포츠 연재본이 아닌)도 복간됐으면 좋겠다.
