비밀과 관련된 여러 가지 사건과 오해가 발생하지만 결국 오해가 풀려서 사랑을 유지하게 된다는 이야기. 킨셀라의 여주인공들은 하나같이 푼수같지만 결코 미워할 수 없는 귀여운 캐릭터이다. 킨셀라의 소설이 가장 잘 들렸는데 이것이 마지막이라니 아쉽다. 왜 유독 그녀의 작품이 제일 잘 들리는 걸까? 그만큼 유쾌하면서도 재미있다는 증거겠지? 하지만 눈으로 읽으라면 글쎄요다. recorded book으로 가장 적합한 작품. 원서로 읽어도 재미 반감. 번역본으로 읽으면 더 반감. 들으면 드라마를 보는 듯한 느낌이 든다. 신기하다.

명품이야기 이상의 뭔가는 없다

영화를 먼저 봐서 영화랑 얼마나 다른지, 어디가 어떻게 다른지 생각하면서 읽었다. 어째 영화가 더 나은 것 같기도 하다..그렇다고 영화가 좋았다는 건 아니구..

영화에서는 그래도 명품 이외의 뭔가가 좀 있다는 느낌이어서 소설은 더 그럴거라고 생각했었는데..별로 아니더군.

오히려 솔직하게 지독한 상사 만나서 1년간 고생한 거 글로 써서 돈 벌었다는 걸 밝히더군..비현실적인 부분도 꽤 눈에 띄고..솔직히 명품이란 명품은 다 나와서 그것때문에 이 소설이 눈에 띄었지 싶다. 사회에 첫발을 내디딘 여성이 직장생활을 하면서 느끼는 어려움과 그걸 헤쳐나가면서 얻는 깨달음을 통해 결국 자신의 꿈을 이룬다는 내용을 기대했으나..

실제로 그녀의 후속작(Everyone Worth Knowing)은 별다른 재미를 보지 못했다고 한다. 이것도 결국 단순한 chick lit에 지나지 않았던 거다. 이 책 덕분에 작가(Lauren Weisberger)는 평생 쓰고도 다 못쓸 돈을 벌었지만 말이다. 씁쓸하군..쇼핑하고 연애하는 얘기가 아니기만 하지 결국 이것도..

너무나도 다른 자매이야기

영화가 괜찮아서 찾아 듣게 된 원작..의외로 재밌다. 원작을 충실히 영화화했더군..아무래도 자매애와 관련된 이야기들이 관심이 간다. 이 글의 제목은 다른 사람의 입장이 되어보기라는 의미와 언니가 사들여서 신발장에 쟁여놓기만 하는 구두를 동생이 신어버리는 자매사이의 관계?- 결국은 정말 다른 자매가 서로를 이해하고 받아들이게 된다-를 암시하는 다소 중의적인 의미를 갖는다.

Rose, a successful attorney, seems to have very little in common with her drop-dead gorgeous, but irresponsible sister, Meggie. Regardless of their differences, Rose has always bailed Maggie out of trouble-until Maggie crosses the line and breaks the biggest rule of sisterhood. Now it will take their long-lost great-grandmother to remind them all of the importance of family.
In Her Shoes is a touching novel that will strike a chord with anyone who has endured the ups and downs of sisterhood, or ever dreamed of becoming someone else.

+ 소설이 더 동생의 심리를 잘 그렸다고나 할까..

예전에 헤밍웨이를 좋아해서 그의 작품을 거의 다 읽었었는데..그 중에 노인과 바다가 제일 재미가 없었더랬다. 그런데 이게 가장 압권이라고 하길래 다시 읽어보았더니..이제는 이 노인네 이해할 수 있을 것 같다.

헤밍웨이의 문장을 접하고 너무 많이 놀랬다. Ernest Hemingway's tough, terse prose and short, declarative sentences did more to change the style of written English than any other writing in the twentieth century. 이런 평가를 받고 있는 헤밍웨이였더군..어쩌면 그렇게 노인의 캐릭터가 분명하게 느껴지는지..그리고 얼마나 간결하면서도 운치가 있는지..레이몬드 카버는 아무것도 아니었다. 하긴 헤밍웨이가 바꿔놓았다지 않은가..무슨 시를 읽고 있는 것 같았다. 역시 대가는 다른 건지..암튼 무슨 명상집을 하나 읽은 기분이다.

노인과 바다의 주제는 아무래도 'A man can be destroyed but not defeated.'가 아닐까..멋진 노인, 멋진 헤밍웨이..
