<자유와 방종>
Better starve free than be a fat slave. 살찐 노예가 되느니 차라리 굶어 죽는 한이 있더라도 자유를 누리는 것이 훨씬 값지다.
Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom. 훌륭하고 영감있는 모든 것은 자유로운 상태에서 열심히 노력하는 사람에 의해서 창조된다.
Freedom is not procured by a full enjoy of what is desired, but by controlling the desire. 자유는 우리들이 원했던 것을 무분별하게 즐김으로써 얻어지는 것이 아니라 욕망을 억제한 결과로 얻어지는 것이다.
Freedom is the will to be responsible to ourselves. 자유란 자신을 책임지는 의지이다.
Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties. 어떠한 자유보다도 먼저, 알 수 있는 자유, 말할 수 있는 자유, 양심에 따라서 주장할 수 있는 자유를 달라.
Lean liberty is better than fat slavery. 웃어라, 그러면 살찔 것이다. 야윈 자유인이 살찐 노예보다 낫다.
Liberty is a different kind of pain from prison. 자유란 감옥과는 다른 종류의 고통이다.

<장단점>
A man without faults is a mountain without crevasses. He is of no interest to me. 결점이 없는 사람은 갈라진 틈이 없는 산악과 같아서 전혀 재미가 없다.
By other's faults wise men/man correct their/his own. 다른 사람의 결점에 의해 현명한 사람은 자기자신의 결점을 고친다. 타산지석(他山之石).
Every bean has its black. 모든 콩은 검은 부분이 있다. 모든 사람이나 물건에는 결점이 있다.
Everyone has a skeleton in his closet. 모든 사람에게는 그의 벽장에 해골을 가지고 있다. 털어서 먼지 안 나는 사람 없다.
Every man has a fool in his sleeve. 모든 사람은 그의 소매 안에 바보를 가지고 있다. 약점 없는 사람은 없다.

If we had no faults, we would not take so much pleasure in nothing them in others. 만일 우리자신에게 결점이 없다면 다른 사람의 결점에도 그다지 흥미를 느끼지 못할 것이다.
Our failings sometimes bind us to one another as closely as could virtue itself. 우리들이 지닌 결점은 미덕과 마찬가지로 때로는 서로의 마음을 맺어주는 강한 끈이 되기도 한다.
Rich men's faults are we would not take so much pleasure in nothing them in others. 부호의 잘못은 돈으로 덮을 수 있고, 의사의 잘못은 흙으로 덮을 수 있다.
The real fault is to have faults and not to a mend them. 진짜 결점은 자신의 결점을 알면서도 고치려고 노력하지 않는 것이다.
Truly it is an evil to be full of faults; but it is a still greater evil to be full of them, and to be unwilling to recognize them. 결점이 많다는 것은 나쁜 것이지만 그것을 인정하지 않는 것은 더 나쁜 것이다.
We forget our faults easily when they are known to ourselves alone. 우리가 홀로 자기자신의 잘못을 알고 있을 때에는 우리는 자신의 잘못을 아주 쉽게 잊어버리게 된다.
<서두름>
Desire to have things done quickly prevents their being done thoroughly. 일을 빨리 끝내라고 함부로 다그치게 되면 결국 어떤 일이건 제대로 되는 법이 없다.
Do nothing hastily but catching of fleas. 벼룩을 잡을 때를 제외하고는 어떤 일에서든 성급함이 없어야 한다.
Nothing can be done at once hastily and prudently. 어떤 일이건 빨리 그리고 신중하게 한다는 것은 도저히 어림없는 일이다.
One of the great disadvantages of hurry is that it takes such a long time. 성급함 때문에 당하는 큰 손해의 하나는 우습게도 무척 많은 시간이 걸린다는 것이다.
Whatever is produced in haste goes hastily to waste. 무엇이든 급하게 만든 것치고 변변한 것은 없다.
Wisely, and slow. They stumble that run fast. 신중하되 천천히 하라. 빨리 뛰는 것이야말로 넘어지는 것이다
<명예>
A celebrity is a who works hard all his life to become known, then wears dark glasses to avoid being recognized. 명사는 사람들이 우러러보는 위치에 오르기 위해 매우 오랫동안 노력을 쌓지만 일단 유명해진 다음에는 세상 사람들의 눈으로부터 숨기 위해 짙은 안경을 낀다.
All fame is dangerous; good bringeth envy; bad, shame.
명성은 그것이 좋은 것이든 나쁜 것이든 간에 모두가 위험하다. 좋은 명성은 질투를 낳고 나쁜 명성은 수치를 낳기 때문이다.
Avoid shame, but do not seek glory, -nothing so expensive as glory.
치욕은 회피하되, 영광을 구하지는 말라. -영광만큼 비싼 값을 치뤄야 하는 것은 없다.
Fame usually comes to those who are thinking about something else.
명성은 평소 그것에 대해 무관심한 사람에게 슬며시 찾아오는 법이다.

<지혜>
Be wisely worldly, be not worldly wise. 현명하게 속되라. 속되게 현명하지 말라.
Brevity is the soul of wit. 간결함은 기지(機知)의 요체(要諦)이다.
He has more wit in his little finger than in your whole body. 그는 그의 새끼손가락에 너의 몸 전체에 있는 것보다 더 많은 기지를 가지고 있다.
If poverty is the mother of all crimes, lack of intelligence is their father. 빈곤이 모든 범죄의 어머니라면 지성의 결함은 그 아버지다.
It requires wisdom to understand wisdom; the music is nothing if the audience is deaf. 지혜를 이해하려면 지혜가 있어야 한다. 제 아무리 훌륭한 음악이라지만 청중이 귀머거리라면 무슨 가치가 있겠는가.

Wisdom at times is found in folly. 지혜로움은 때때로 어리석음 속에서 발견된다.
Wisdom / comes alone through suffering. 지혜는 고난을 통하여 체득되는 것이다
<용기>
All work of man is as the swimmer's; a waste [vast] ocean threatens to devour him; if he front it not bravely, it will keep its word. 사람의 모든 일은 수영을 하는 것과 같다. 바다를 헤치고 나갈 때 파도에 쓸려 바다 속으로 빨려 들어갈 위험에 처하지만 그때 헤엄치는 사람이 용감하게 대응하지 않으면 바다는 여지없이 그를 삼켜 버리고 말기 때문이다.
Courage is a kind of salvation. 용기란 일종의 구원이다.
Cowards die many times before their death. The valiant never taste of death but once. 겁쟁이가 죽는 것은 여러 번이지만 용기있는 사람이 죽는 것은 오직 한 번 뿐이다.
Even man has his own courage, and is betrayed because he seeks in himself the courage of other persons. 모든 사람이 용기를 가지고 있음에도 남의 용기를 자신 속에서 얻으려 하기 때문에 결국 배반이 생기는 것이다.
Even the pluckiest among us has but seldom the courage of what he really knows. 심지어 우리들 중에서 가장 용기있는 사람조차도 자신이 정말로 알고 있는 용기가 뭔지 알지 못한다.
Everyone becomes brave when he observes one who despairs. 절망에 빠져 있는 사람을 보게 되면 어느 누구라도 용기가 치솟게 된다.
If you knew how cowardly your enemy is, you would slap him. Bravery is knowledge of the cowardice in the enemy. 만일 당신의 적이 겁쟁이라는 것을 알게 되면 당신은 그를 거침없이 후려칠 것이다. 결국 용감이란 적의 겁먹은 마음을 알아차리는 것이다.
Love of fame, fear of disgrace, schemes for advancement, desire to make life comfortable and pleasant, and the urge to humiliate others are often at the root of the valour men hold in such high esteem. 명예로 움을 귀하게 여기는 마음, 부끄러움을 두려워하는 마음, 승진을 위한 수단, 좀 더 편한 생활을 바라는 마음, 즐거움을 구하려는 욕망, 타인에게 부끄러움을 주려는 충동 따위는 다름아닌 세상에서 높이 존경받고 있는 용기있는 사람의 마음속에 깔려있는 것이다.
None but the brave deserves the fair. 용기있는 자만이 미인을 차지할 수 있다.
People with courage and character always seem sinister to the rest. 용기와 인격, 둘을 다 겸비한 사람은 타인들에게 따분한 존재로밖에 보여지지 않는다.
Perfect courage and utter cowardice and two extremes which rarely occur. 완벽한 용기와 극도의 두려움, 이것은 어느 누구에게도 생기지 않는 두 극단이다.
Perfect valour consists in doing without witnesses that which we would be capable of doing before everyone. 이상적인 용기란 비록 증인이 없음에도 모든 사람들 앞에서 자신이 할 수 있는 것을 자신있게 실행하는 것이다.

The coward calls the brave man rash, the rash man calls him a coward. 겁쟁이는 용감한 사람을 가리켜 망나니라고 하고 망나니는 용감한 사람을 가리켜 겁쟁이라고 한다.
The paradox of courage is that a man must be a little careless of his life even in order to keep it. 용기의 모순은 인간이 자신의 생명을 힘을 다해 지킬 때조차도 반쯤은 목숨을 걸어야 한다는 점이다.
They are surely to be esteemed the bravest spirits who, having the clearest sense of both the pains and pleasures of life, do not on that account shrink from danger. 인생의 괴로움과 기쁨을 잘 알고 있으면서도 위험에서 꽁무니를 빼지 않는 사람이야말로 더욱 더 용감한 사람으로서의 평가를 받게 된다.
Until the day of his death, no man can be sure of his courage. 사람은 죽는 그 날까지도 자신의 용기에 대해서는 확신할 수 없는 법이다
