오래간만에 책에서 손을 뗄 수 없게 만드는 책을 만났다. 이 책에 관한 사람들의 칭찬은 무수히 많아서 내가 또 하나를 덧붙이는 건 사족이라는 생각이 든다. 과연 인간의 한계는 어디까지이며 인간의 본성은 어디까지 허용될 수 있을까?

Pi Patel: " So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can't prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story, the story with animal or the story without animal?"
Mr. Okamoto: " That's an interesting question..."
Mr. Chiba: "The story with animals."
Mr. Okamoto: "Yes. The story with animals is the better story."
Pi Patel: "Thank you. And so it goes with God."
마지막에 들려주는 두 가지 이야기 중 어떤 것을 선택하던지 그것은 독자의 몫이다. 파이는 살아 남았다.
