Scary Stories for Young Foxes is harrowing, especially in the first half. 

I'm the person who always google, "Does the dog, cat, horse, or whatever animal die?" before I start reading. In this story, so many foxes die, and the danger continues almost until the end. I also googled from the very beginning whether the main characters, Mia and Uli, survive. 

While reading, I kept asking myself What is the value of horror, for me and for children? This is a Newbery Honor book, after all. What on earth is supposed to be good about this? 

Now I think I understand a little better. After reading it, I became a slightly more resilient reader. I adjusted myself, at least a little, to the cruelty of nature (cruelty from a human perspective) and to the fact that animals die in stories. Strangely, I hardly care when fictional human characters die, but animal deaths are almost unbearable to me. Still, the story somehow seeped into me. 

The book has a fram narrative: an old storyteller fox tells frightening stories to a group of young foxees. One by one, the young foxes leave because they cannot bear the story anymore. Only one little fox remain until the end, and then discover who the storyteller really is. 

In the story, Mia is attacked by her own brothers and sisters, and even by a trusted teacher, because of "the yellow", which seems like rabies. When Mia and her mother run away, Mia is captured by the most terrifying villain of all. A human. And not just any human. Beatrix Potter! Mia manages to escape and meets Uli. 

Uli has a damaged front leg, and becuase of that, his father orders him to be killed. His mother tries to protect him, but when Mr. Scratch. his father discovers him being alive, Uli has to run away, then meet Mia. 

Their journey is never easy. Nothing is gentle for them. There is always another danger, another loss, another hardship. But they have each other. 

In the end, this is an incredibly moving story about resilient foxes who are threatend not only by the outside world, but by their own families. It is brutal and frightening, but it is also a story about survival, companionship, and the small, fierce will to keep going. 

이렇게 무서운 이야기를 읽기 시작하는게 아니었는데! ㅜㅜ 처음 반은 끝도 없이 힘들어서 호러 소설을 읽으면 좋은 점은? 아이들에게 가르쳐주는 모럴은? 계속 검색하며 마음을 다졌다. 나는 뭔 책이든 읽는데 동물 나오면 구글에 죽나요? 검색하는 사람이라고. 

메인 캐릭터인 미아와 울리가 끝까지 살아남는다는 검색 결과를 보고, 호러 소설의 장점들을 하나씩 꼽아보며, 꾸역꾸역 책을 읽었다. 아이들에게 읽힐건데, 내가 힘들다고 포기하면 안되니깐. 

끔찍함의 절정은 미아와 미아의 엄마가 도망가다가 엄마가 덫에 걸리고, 엄마를 구하려다 미아가 인간에게 잡히는 부분이었다. 이쯤이면 도망갈 때가 되지 않았나? 이번에는 탈출 성공할 것 같은데? 독자의 기대를 몇 번이나 저버리며 미아는 끓는 솥에 들어가기 직전에 울리를 만난다. 그리고, 울리와 미아의 모험이 시작된다. 

끝까지 힘들지만, 그래도 둘에게 서로가 있어서 계속 읽어나갈 수 있었던 것 같다. 마음도 덜 힘들어졌다. 

아기 여우들, 미아와 울리는 아기 여우들인데, 이 아기 여우들이 험난한 숲에서 살아 남기 위한 여정은 끝까지 험난하다. 

그리고, 아이들이 그렇듯,살아 남아 성장한다. 

책은 나이든 이야기꾼 여우가 아기 여우들에게 무서운 이야기를 해주는 액자식 구성이다. 아기 여우들은 이야기 하나 끝날 때마다 무서워하며 하나씩 집으로 돌아가고, 마지막에는 작은 여우 한 마리만 남는다. 그리고, 이야기꾼 여우의 정체가 밝혀진다. 

처음부터 마지막까지 굉장히 밀도가 높은 쉴(안심할) 틈이 없는 이야기이다. 2026년 뉴베리상의 트렌드는 '상실'과 '슬픔'과 '성장'이다. 아니, 성장이라기보다는 앞으로 나아감, 멈추지 않음이라고 말할 수 있겠다. 아기 여우들 이야기가 뉴베리상을 탔던 해의 주제가 뭔지는 안 찾아봤지만, 이 책 또한 '상실', '슬픔', '나아감' 을 이야기하고 있다. '호러' 가 이야기하는 것이 지금 가장 많이 읽히는 이야기의 주제와 닿아 있다는 것이 묘하다. 요즘 눈에 띄는 해외 어덜트 픽션 트렌드도 '상실'과 '슬픔'과 '나아감' 이라고 할 수 있을 것 같다. 근데, 이게 어린아이든 어린 여우든 어린 것이 아니라면 좀 복잡해진다. 누가 상실을 겪고, 누가 슬픔을 안고 나아가는지. 그렇게 모든 이야기들이 결국 닮아 있는 주제를 가지고 있다는 것에 대해 생각해보게 된다. 

이런 생각을 하게 된 계기는 엊그제 읽은 곰브리치의 'A Little History of the World' 에서 진시황이 역사책을 태워버린 것에 대한 챕터를 읽고 나서인 것 같다. 분서갱유를 모든 책을 태웠다고 알고 있었는데, 곰브리치는 '역사책'을 태웠다고 하고, 챕터 제목은 An Enemy of History 였다. 인간의 이야기를 담고 있는 모든 책은 결국 역사책이지 않나. 그 동안 사건 위주의 역사책들을 읽다가 인간 위주의 곰브리치의 역사책을 읽고 있자니, 장르를 넘어 같은 주제를 관통하는 이야기들에 대해 생각하게 된다.
