‘이순신 리더십‘ ‘CEO 이순신’이 새삼 조명받고 있다.

김훈의 소설 ‘칼의 노래’와 TV드라마 ‘불멸의 이순신’이 대중적인 ‘이순신바람’을 불러온 데 이어, 이제 그를 ‘나라를 구한 영웅’이라는 추상적인 모습에서 한걸음 나가 치밀한 전략과 리더십을 갖춘 전략가이자 최고경영자로 접근하는 연구가 잇따르고 있다.

절대 우세의 일본군에 맞서 승리를 얻은 이순신의 위기 극복의 리더십을 통해 기업경영과 나라운영의 교훈을 얻자는 기획이다.

28일은 이순신 탄신 460주년. 이순신 평전을 곧 펴낼 예정인 소설가 송우혜씨는 “이순신은 위기관리능력의 극대치를 보여준 인물”이라며 “어려운 시기일수록 그의 리더십과 전략적 사고를 곱씹을 필요가 있다”고 말했다.

인터넷서점 YES24에서 ‘이순신’이란 키워드로 검색하면 148건이 나온다. 이중 3분의 1이 넘는 55권이 작년 하반기 이후 나온 책들이다. 이순신은 이제 역사교양서에 머물지 않고 경제경영서의 주제가 됐다.

최근 나온 윤영수 지음 ‘불패의 리더 이순신, 그는 어떻게 이겼을까’(웅진지식하우스)는 치밀한 전략으로 승리를 일궈낸 필승의 리더십과 용병술을 분석했다. 황원갑 지음 ‘부활하는 이순신’(이코비즈니스)도 준비된 장군이자 최고경영자였던 이순신을 통해 위기극복의 지혜를 알려주는 데 초점을 맞추었다.

‘신에게는 아직도 열 두척의 배가 남아있나이다’(전2권·비봉출판사)는 철저한 고증과 사료(史料)에 근거한 임진왜란 해전사다. 아마추어 연구자 20여명의 모임인 이순신역사연구회(회장 정광수)가 난중일기, 임진장초, 징비록, 선조실록 등을 바탕으로 답사를 거쳐 충무공 해전을 분석해 이순신 연구의 지평을 넓혔다.

정 회장은 1980년 재직하고 있던 한 보험회사에서 동료들과 이순신 연구동아리를 만든 게 계기가 되어 직장을 그만두고 충무공을 본격 연구했으며, 거북선 복원 작업에 참여하기도 했다. 정 회장은 “이순신 연구가 소수의 학자에 국한되지 말고 많은 사람들에게 확산돼 일상생활에서 그의 정신을 실천할 수 있어야 한다”고 말했다.

이순신의 해전에서 무엇을 배울 수 있을까. 1592년 6월 2일 당포해전에서 이순신은 거북선을 선봉에 내세워 수십 척의 왜선으로 둘러싸인 대장선을 격파, 전세의 기선을 잡았다. 아무도 예상하지 못했을 때 적의 가장 견고한 곳을 공격해 승리로 이끈 이 전투는 현대 경영전략으로 활용할 수 있다.

웅천해전은 상륙전은 결코 하지 않는다는 고정관념을 과감히 뒤집어 적의 허를 찔렀다. 옥포해전·한산대첩·명량대첩 등 절체절명의 순간에 리더로서의 이순신이 갖춘 마인드를 분석하고 승전의 포인트를 지적해 훌륭한 인생의 지침이자 경제경영서로도 읽힌다.

황원갑씨는 “이순신은 열세를 우세로, 수세를 공세로, 위기를 기회로 반전시킨 탁월한 지도자”라고 말했다
